You can broadcast a podcast archive continuously on YouTube from a Chromebook, but the more dependable approach is to use a browser-based cloud streaming service rather than leave the Chromebook running a local encoder. Set up YouTube Live Control Room, give the service your stream key, upload or select the archive, and test playback before going public. YouTube identifies browser-based cloud studio Upstream for 24/7 streaming; StreamNeo is another YouTube-only cloud option for looping uploaded videos.
Before you start: confirm live access and rebroadcast rights
- Enable YouTube live streaming early. The channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Confirm permission to rebroadcast every part of the archive. Check rights for the podcast recording, music, guest contributions, clips, artwork, and any third-party material. Permission to publish an episode as a podcast does not necessarily include permission to retransmit it as a YouTube livestream. YouTube may interrupt or restrict a stream when it detects copyrighted content.
- Prepare the source files. Organize the episodes or recordings you intend to play and decide whether the broadcast should repeat one file or move through a playlist. Keep the originals separately; YouTube’s live archive is not a substitute for your own backup.
- Check your connection. A cloud service still needs a reliable connection while you upload files, configure the broadcast, and monitor it. For any locally encoded stream, your outgoing connection must sustain the total stream bitrate.
Recommended Chromebook approach: use a browser-based cloud studio
A cloud studio moves the continuous playback and encoding work away from the Chromebook. You use the browser to configure the stream and upload or select the archive; the service handles the ongoing broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guide describes Upstream as a browser-based cloud studio intended for 24/7 streaming. That establishes its use case, but not its current pricing, account requirements, detailed controls, or recovery behavior. Check those details with the service before relying on it.
Set up and test the YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a livestream. Choose the encoder workflow to obtain the server URL and stream key. Labels can change over time, so follow the current prompts shown in Live Control Room.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: enter it only in the streaming service you chose, do not share it, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed. A person with the key may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Upload or select the archive in the cloud studio. Build the playback sequence and set looping if the service offers it. Confirm how the service handles a playlist ending, a file error, and a dropped connection; do not assume restart or failover behavior that the provider has not documented.
- Enter YouTube’s stream details in the service. Add the server URL and stream key, then set the stream title, visibility, and other available broadcast details. Keep the first test private or unlisted.
- Choose a video format that fits the content and service. A podcast can use a still cover image or simple visual, provided the selected service supports it. YouTube’s encoder recommendations cover H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps; a particular browser studio may support fewer choices.
- Test the stream before making it public. Use the YouTube preview to check that the image appears, the audio is audible and in sync, the playlist behaves as intended, and YouTube reports stable stream health. Test with material and settings similar to the planned broadcast, then switch visibility or schedule the public stream when ready.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream health and the cloud service’s playback status, especially after the first launch or any change to files or settings.
Why installing OBS on ChromeOS is not the dependable default
OBS lists Linux/Unix among its supported operating-system families, but that does not mean OBS is supported on ChromeOS. An OBS forum administrator says ChromeOS itself is unsupported because of platform limitations, including screen capture. ChromeOS Linux availability is also not proof that an application will work reliably inside its Linux environment. Chromium says Linux on ChromeOS is supported on devices launched in 2019 or later unless specified otherwise, and it lists some older supported devices; that is a statement about Linux environment availability, not OBS compatibility.

A local encoder also depends on the Chromebook staying powered, awake, connected, and able to keep encoding without interruption. For a continuous archive stream, a browser-based cloud setup avoids making the Chromebook do that ongoing work.

Bitrate, resolution, and network settings
For a cloud studio, use the settings its controls support and follow YouTube’s guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate. For any encoder that exposes these controls, YouTube recommends constant-bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted form of RTMP, where the encoder supports it. YouTube’s recommendations are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a specific Chromebook or service supports every codec or setting.
- Choose a bitrate the upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing the actual connection and leaving headroom; its streaming tips call for about 20% headroom beyond the bitrate requirement.
- When planning primary and backup streams, account for their combined upload demand where applicable.
- If the Chromebook has a suitable port and wired networking is available, a compatible USB Ethernet adapter is an option to investigate. Match the connector and verify compatibility with the specific Chromebook; an adapter cannot fix an inadequate or unstable internet service.
- For an audio-focused show, a static image may avoid needless visual complexity, but test it in the chosen service and ensure the image is appropriate for YouTube.

Plan around YouTube’s livestream archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local backup. Its guidance warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This is a limit on relying on YouTube to preserve the livestream, not a rule that the broadcast itself must stop at 12 hours. If retaining a complete recording matters, keep the original files or arrange a separate recording method, and test that preservation plan.
Troubleshooting a podcast livestream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a livestream | Live streaming is not enabled, first-time activation is still processing, or the channel has a restriction. | Check channel verification and live-streaming eligibility in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
| YouTube shows no incoming video | The stream key or server URL is wrong, the service has not started sending, or the chosen output settings are unsupported. | Recheck the URL and key in Live Control Room and the cloud service. Confirm its supported output settings, then restart the test stream. |
| Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync | Incorrect audio selection, an unsuitable encoding setting, or a problem with the source file. | Preview the source file in the service, check its audio output settings, and test with a short representative segment before going public. |
| The broadcast buffers or stream health is poor | The outgoing connection is unstable or lacks bitrate headroom; a local encoder may also be overtaxing the Chromebook. | Run a speed test on the actual connection, reduce the bitrate if the encoder allows it, leave headroom, and use wired networking if compatible and available. For a cloud stream, check both service status and YouTube stream health. |
| The playlist stops or does not repeat as expected | Looping may not be enabled, or the service may handle playlist completion differently than expected. | Verify the playback configuration and test a full playlist cycle before scheduling a long broadcast. Confirm the provider’s documented behavior rather than assuming automatic restart. |
| The livestream is missing from saved videos | The stream may have exceeded 12 hours or the archive may not have completed. | Do not depend on YouTube’s archive for a stream longer than 12 hours. Keep a separate recording or source-file backup. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The Chromebook does not have to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Every slot streams the file as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Chromebook stream a podcast archive while the lid is closed?
A local encoder depends on the Chromebook remaining awake and connected. A cloud studio handles the continuous playback remotely, so the Chromebook does not need to run the broadcast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes YouTube automatically save an entire 24/7 stream?
Do not rely on that: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a separate copy if preservation matters.
