You can keep a podcast archive playing on YouTube Live by running an encoder such as FFmpeg on an always-on VPS. First create a YouTube live event, then configure the VPS encoder to send the archive to the event’s ingest URL with its stream key. YouTube Studio manages the viewer-facing event; the VPS runs the media feed. This is a deployment pattern, not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery, so test the archive, encoder, and recovery process before relying on it.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
YouTube treats the broadcast and the incoming stream as separate resources. A broadcast is the event viewers watch; the stream carries the encoder’s audio and video. The VPS does not create the event by itself: create or schedule it in YouTube Studio, then connect the encoder to the event’s ingest settings. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation for the broadcast and stream model.
The basic path is: prepare the episodes and visual treatment, create the YouTube event, run FFmpeg on the VPS against the archive, and verify the output in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover the Studio workflow. The YouTube encoder guidance should be checked for current settings; do not assume one encoding profile suits every source.
Prepare the podcast archive
Inventory and order the media
Decide which episodes to include, their playback order, and whether the feed should repeat the same sequence or use a curated playlist. Check that each file is accessible to the VPS process. If the source is audio-only, decide what viewers should see, such as a static image or a prepared video file. Test transitions between files and confirm that audio remains synchronized with any video treatment.

Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
Check rights and channel suitability
Before broadcasting, confirm that you have permission to livestream every episode and any music, clips, artwork, or other third-party material in it. Rights depend on the specific content and permissions; a general setup guide cannot determine whether your archive is cleared. YouTube’s encoder guidance says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program, but that does not establish that a particular archive is eligible or that repeated playback meets all applicable channel policies.
Create a YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Create a stream or open the Manage tab to schedule one. Scheduling can give viewers a page to find and set reminders for.
- In Live Control Room, copy the event’s stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the VPS encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to source control, expose it in screenshots, or write it to accessible logs.
- If you intend to use the same stream settings again, YouTube documents reusing settings. Confirm the event and ingest details in Studio before each launch.
For scheduled events, start sending the encoder feed and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. If Studio requires it, click Go live to make the event public.

Run FFmpeg from a VPS
Choose and prepare the server
Install FFmpeg on a Linux VPS, place the media where the process can read it, and configure the encoder to play the source at real-time speed while sending its output to YouTube. A practical example of this pattern is described in this FFmpeg/VPS guide; use it as an illustration, not as a substitute for the FFmpeg protocol reference or YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
For continuous playback, explicitly configure the intended playlist or repeat behavior rather than assuming the encoder will loop automatically. Test how the process handles the last file, transitions, audio-only sources, and any network or file errors. No universal command, codec, bitrate, or VPS size is established for every archive and output format, so select settings for your media and verify them against YouTube’s current guidance before going live.

Use secure ingest and plan for process failure
When supported by the encoder, use RTMPS for secure ingest. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; the endpoint, application path, and port must match YouTube’s instructions. Its RTMPS guide specifies the RTMPS endpoint details, including port 443.
Use a service manager or equivalent restart policy so the process can recover after an exit or VPS reboot. Add health checks and alerts, and keep a recovery procedure for restoring the feed and event if it stops. These safeguards reduce the chance of a silent failure; they do not guarantee uninterrupted delivery.

Verify the live feed before relying on it
- Start the encoder on the VPS and confirm that Live Control Room receives a preview.
- For a scheduled event, click Go live if Studio prompts you after the preview appears.
- Watch from a separate viewer session. Confirm sound, episode order, the intended image, and stable playback, including at file transitions.
- Check the actual event and replay in Studio after the broadcast. Do not assume the encoder’s continued operation means the viewer-facing broadcast is active.
Choose one continuous event or shorter scheduled broadcasts
| Pattern | Useful when | Trade-offs to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| One continuous broadcast | You want one long-running viewer-facing event and a single continuing encoder feed. | Consider moderation and discoverability, replay needs, and how a long event fits the channel’s workflow. YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition is limited to streams under 12 hours. |
| Scheduled shorter broadcasts | You want distinct events with explicit start and end handling. | Scheduling adds operator work, but supports separate event pages and reminders. Plan how the encoder and schedule will reset between events and how each replay will be checked. |
Plan for archives and replays
YouTube states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That is YouTube’s stated condition for automatic archiving, not a guarantee of a complete automatic replay for an event lasting 12 hours or longer. If a complete replay matters, design event lengths and restart or scheduling behavior accordingly, then confirm the archive in Studio.
Estimate VPS needs and operating cost
There is no universal VPS resource minimum or price established for this workload. Compare candidate plans by sustained CPU capacity for your chosen encoding, storage for the archive, network transfer limits, server region, support terms, and price. Measure the selected configuration with the actual media and output settings; do not choose a plan based on an assumed minimum.

Include operational costs as well as hosting: storage and transfer allowances may matter for a continuously running feed, and someone still needs to respond to alerts, check event status, and recover the process. The VPS route gives you control over the encoder environment, but it also makes you responsible for configuring and supervising it.
Troubleshoot common failures
- No preview in Live Control Room: confirm that the event is active and that the encoder uses the exact ingest URL and stream key shown for it. Check that the VPS process is running and can reach the ingest endpoint.
- RTMPS connection fails: check that you selected the RTMPS endpoint and application path, and that port 443 is available to the VPS. Compare the endpoint details with YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- The event has a preview but is not public: for a scheduled event, wait for the preview and complete the Go live action in Live Control Room if prompted.
- Playback stops at the end of an episode: review the playlist or repeat configuration and test the exact file sequence. Continuous playback requires explicit handling of the source’s end and transitions.
- The feed ends after a VPS reboot or encoder exit: inspect the process logs and service-manager status, then configure an appropriate restart policy, health checks, and alerts.
- A replay is missing or incomplete: check the event duration and Studio archive. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours; do not count on that statement for longer events.
