To broadcast several recorded event sessions as one YouTube Live stream, play the replay files in sequence through an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that encoder output to a scheduled YouTube live event. In OBS, use a VLC Video source with shuffle off so the files play in order. This is different from a YouTube playlist, which organizes videos on your channel after publication.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is eligible to live stream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; its current guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. Check your status in YouTube Studio because eligibility is account-specific. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
  • OBS Studio on a computer capable of playing the replay files and encoding a live stream.
  • VLC installed on that computer. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC and may not appear until it is installed.
  • Local copies of the event replays, checked for picture, sound, aspect ratio, and clean starts and endings.
  • Permission to rebroadcast every part of the recordings, including music, graphics, footage, and other embedded material. YouTube’s stream settings guidance makes clear that stream content must respect audio and video rights.

Build and test the replay playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC and open OBS. Confirm that VLC is installed before adding the playlist source; OBS documents that its VLC source requires it. Refer to OBS Media Sources.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Create a new source, then add the replay files to its playlist in the intended running order.
  3. Set playback order and ending behavior. Turn shuffle off to retain your chosen sequence. Choose whether the playlist should loop or stop when it reaches the final replay. For a one-time event, stopping at the end is usually the predictable choice; looping is useful only if you deliberately want the sequence to repeat.
  4. Check the scene and audio. Make sure the source fits the canvas without unwanted cropping or distortion. Play the files in OBS and confirm each one has sound, advances correctly, and starts and ends as expected. OBS’s Sources Guide explains how sources are added and arranged in scenes. Add a holding slate or transition only if it helps viewers between sessions.
  5. Run the full sequence before the event. Test every file in order, including transitions and the end of the final file. Check the audio level and watch for blank frames, missing media, or unexpected gaps. A playlist that works in a brief spot-check may still fail when a later file is missing or has an unusual format.

Schedule the YouTube Live event and connect OBS

  1. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create a scheduled stream. A scheduled event can have an upcoming watch page where viewers can set a reminder. YouTube recommends sharing the stream link at least 48 hours ahead; see Promote your live stream.
  2. Copy the ingest details. In the scheduled stream’s settings, copy the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter or connect the account details as offered by your OBS version. If entering details manually, use the server URL and stream key from the event’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder guide explains this connection.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with people who should not be able to send video to your event. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  4. Start early and check the preview. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. These are recommendations, not guaranteed technical requirements. Confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room and that picture and sound are correct before the audience arrives. See YouTube live streaming tips.
  5. Go live from YouTube Studio when ready. Starting the encoder sends its output to YouTube, but follow the Live Control Room prompts and verify the event is live. Monitor the broadcast so you can catch a stalled playlist, silent audio, or a dropped connection.

Keep the three playlist and handoff features straight

Feature What it does Use it for
OBS VLC playlist Plays local replay files in sequence as the encoder’s live output. One continuous YouTube Live broadcast made from recordings stored on your computer.
YouTube channel playlist Groups published videos and completed live archives on your channel. Organizing event recordings and highlight clips after publication. YouTube recommends organizing archives and clips into playlists in its promotion guidance.
YouTube Live Redirect Hands viewers off at the end of a live stream to a Premiere or another live stream. A final destination after the broadcast, not a queue for local replay files. YouTube says the creator sending a redirect needs more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes; redirecting viewers to another channel’s live stream also requires that channel’s permission. Details: Live Redirect eligibility and setup.

Finish the broadcast and organize its replay

  1. When the final replay has ended, stop the stream cleanly from the encoder and follow the Live Control Room controls to end the event.
  2. Check the channel’s Live tab for the replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is not a guarantee for streams at or above that duration. See the encoder guide.
  3. Organize the resulting archive with the other event sessions or highlight clips in a YouTube channel playlist. This post-publication playlist is separate from the OBS playlist that played the files during the live broadcast.

Troubleshooting common problems

The VLC Video source is missing

OBS requires VLC for this source. Install VLC, restart OBS if needed, and check the Sources panel again. See OBS’s source documentation.

A replay is skipped, out of order, or repeats unexpectedly

Open the VLC source properties and review the playlist order, shuffle setting, and loop behavior. Confirm that every file still exists at its listed location, then test the entire sequence rather than only the first clip.

The YouTube preview does not appear

Confirm OBS is connected to the scheduled event using its current server URL and stream key, then check that the encoder is sending output and that you selected the intended event in Live Control Room. If the key was reset or exposed, update OBS with the replacement.

Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

The stream is live but silent or shows the wrong picture

Check the VLC source’s audio and video in the OBS preview, confirm the source is visible in the active scene, and verify the computer’s playback device and OBS audio meters. Check a later file too; different recordings can have different audio tracks or layouts.

The broadcast stops before all sessions play

Check whether the VLC playlist is set to stop after the final item, whether a file failed to load, and whether the computer or network lost service. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours; it does not promise continuous delivery if the encoder stops.
