To stream a nonprofit radio station to YouTube Live, send the station’s audio and a video feed through an encoder to a YouTube Live Control Room stream. Before broadcasting, verify the channel, confirm that the station’s music rights cover YouTube and any replay, and test the complete audio and video path. YouTube’s encoder workflow is designed for external audio and video equipment, including advanced setups with mixers.
Before you set up the stream
Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility
The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. If it is the channel’s first time live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable and verify access well before broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Confirm music and archive rights
Nonprofit status does not by itself grant permission to broadcast music on YouTube. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including applicable rights from artists, labels, publishers and other royalty participants. Confirm that the station’s agreements cover YouTube Live, the territories where the stream can be viewed, and any archived replay. A license for terrestrial radio or another service should not be assumed to cover these uses; the answer depends on the station’s location and contracts. Read YouTube’s terms and consult the relevant rights holders or licensing administrators.
Recommended Free Tools
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can trigger a warning and replacement placeholder; if the matched content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even music the station is licensed to use can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask relevant rights owners or administrators about allowlisting before going live. A Content ID claim may also appear on the archived stream after the event. Details are in YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright.

How to send the station feed to YouTube
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Create a new stream or reuse existing settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into the encoder. Treat the key like a password: it lets the encoder send a feed to the channel. YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions explain the process.
- Route the station audio to the encoder. Connect a suitable output from the station’s mixer or console to the encoder computer or hardware. The exact connection depends on the station’s equipment. If the computer cannot accept the console’s output, an audio interface may provide the needed connection; it is optional, not a standard requirement. Test the actual signal path rather than assuming the computer is receiving the intended program audio.
- Add a video feed. YouTube Live is a video stream carrying the radio audio. A camera can show presenters or the studio; alternatively, use an appropriate station graphic as the visual canvas. YouTube does not mandate a particular visual design, but the video feed must be present and should match what listeners are hearing.
- Set and check encoder audio. YouTube’s general encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Use a current YouTube-compatible encoder preset where available, then verify the selected protocol and settings in Live Control Room. Supported encoders and settings can change; consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Test the complete setup. Use representative station audio and movement in the video, start the encoder, and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. Confirm that the watch page works on the channel and on a mobile device, and check that the audio is clear and correctly routed. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder stream at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. Monitor audio, video and stream-health messages throughout. See YouTube’s streaming preparation tips.
- Check available upload capacity. YouTube recommends roughly 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate. Test upload capacity, and account for other users and devices sharing the office connection: a speed test on an otherwise idle network may overstate what the encoder can use during a broadcast.
- Go live, then end the event cleanly. Once the preview and stream health are acceptable, start the event from Live Control Room. When the broadcast is over, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Review the resulting archive and its rights status as a separate use of the content.
Common problems and what to check
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- The preview has no audio or the wrong audio: Check the console output, cable or interface connection, encoder input selection and audio meters. Verify the actual program feed before starting the event.
- The stream is unstable or reports health problems: Check the encoder’s stream-health messages and available upload bandwidth. Reduce competing network use or improve the connection if it lacks YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- The live stream is interrupted by a copyright match: Review the alert and the matched material. Confirm that the station’s rights cover YouTube Live and ask the rights holder or administrator to allowlist the channel where appropriate; a license alone may not prevent Content ID interruption.
- A claim appears after the broadcast: Check the archive’s rights status. YouTube may identify a match on the archived stream after the live event, so the station needs archive rights as well as live-broadcast coverage.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded radio program or other uploaded recording that should play continuously, StreamNeo is a different workflow from the encoder setup above: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast directly from a live studio camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and the stream can continue with your computer off. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is available if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
