Mixxx’s documented Live Broadcasting feature sends audio to Icecast or Shoutcast, not directly to YouTube Live. To broadcast a Mixxx show on YouTube, route Mixxx’s audio into an encoder such as OBS, build a scene with your chosen visuals, and send the encoder feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Add Mixxx’s radio-server setup only if you also want a separate Icecast or Shoutcast stream.

How the audio and video reach YouTube

The signal path is Mixxx playback → an audio input captured by an encoder → the encoder’s YouTube stream URL and key → YouTube Live. Mixxx handles the DJ playback and mixing; the encoder packages the audio with a visual source and sends the live feed. This is separate from Mixxx’s Live Broadcasting connection to an Icecast or Shoutcast server. The Mixxx 2.4 manual documents those radio-server targets, while YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and key in Live Control Room. Mixxx Live Broadcasting manual; YouTube encoder setup.

Set up Mixxx audio and YouTube Live

1. Create or select the YouTube stream

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into your encoder’s streaming settings. The key identifies the destination and authorizes YouTube to accept the encoder feed; treat it like a password and do not publish or share it. Use the URL provided in Live Control Room rather than guessing a server endpoint. YouTube’s encoder instructions.

2. Make an encoder scene

  1. In an encoder such as OBS, create a scene and add a visual source: for example, a show graphic, camera, or other appropriate image.
  2. Select the audio input that carries Mixxx playback. Depending on your operating system and audio setup, this may be a desktop-audio or loopback input, or an external mixer/interface input. The exact capture menus vary by OS and software version; follow instructions specific to your system and confirm that the encoder’s audio meters move while Mixxx is playing.
  3. Monitor the encoder preview and audio. If you use a microphone, check that it is routed intentionally and does not feed back into the mix. A microphone, mixer, or audio interface is optional; it is useful only when your setup needs that hardware connection. YouTube live-streaming equipment guidance.

3. Choose RTMPS and set encoding

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. Select the RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room and pair it with the stream key. YouTube RTMPS guidance.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as the reference for resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate; the appropriate bitrate depends on the output you choose and your available upload capacity. The listed guidance calls for H.264 video and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, with a recommended two-second keyframe interval. For stereo audio, YouTube’s advanced settings recommend AAC or MP3 at 128 kbps. YouTube encoder settings and bitrates. A stable connection with headroom above the encoder’s selected bitrate helps avoid interruptions; verify stream health rather than assuming a setting is working.

4. Preview, go live, and monitor

  1. Start streaming from the encoder. Wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  2. Check that the picture is correct and that the audio is audible and at a sensible level. For a scheduled stream, use the Go live control when the preview is ready.
  3. While broadcasting, watch YouTube’s stream health and listen for missing, distorted, or unexpectedly routed audio. YouTube transcodes a live feed into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not replace checking the quality of the signal you send. YouTube encoder settings guidance.

5. End the broadcast cleanly

Follow the event workflow in Live Control Room: end the stream there when appropriate, and stop the encoder feed. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe stopping the encoder as part of ending a stream; scheduled workflows also provide an End stream action. YouTube encoder instructions.

When to configure Mixxx Live Broadcasting

Configure Mixxx’s Live Broadcasting panel only if you also need a conventional internet-radio feed to an Icecast or Shoutcast server. For YouTube alone, that server is not required: the encoder sends the YouTube feed. If you do need both destinations, treat them as separate outputs, with separate credentials and settings.

The Mixxx 2.4 manual lists server type, host name or IP, login, mount, port, and password among its connection settings. Icecast requires a mount point; the manual warns not to put a full URL in the Host field. Mixxx supports Icecast output in MP3 or Ogg Vorbis and Shoutcast output in MP3. It describes 128 or 160 kbps as common audio bitrates for these radio streams; those figures concern the Mixxx-to-radio-server feed, not YouTube’s encoder video bitrate. Common problems and fixes

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Confirm the encoder is actively sending, that its URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room, and that you used the provided RTMPS endpoint if supported. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  • The YouTube preview has no Mixxx audio: Check that Mixxx is playing, the intended system/loopback or hardware input is selected in the encoder, and the encoder’s audio meters respond. OS-level audio routing differs, so check the current instructions for your OS rather than relying on a universal menu path.
  • Audio is present but the show graphic or camera is missing: Check that the intended visual source is added and visible in the active encoder scene, then verify the preview in Live Control Room before going live.
  • The stream is unstable or quality is poor: Review YouTube stream health, confirm CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval, and choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain using YouTube’s current settings table.
  • Mixxx cannot connect to the radio server: This affects the separate Icecast/Shoutcast feed, not the YouTube encoder connection. Check server type, host, port, login, password, and—on Icecast—the mount point. Do not enter a full URL as the Host value.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that loops uploaded recordings around the clock rather than a live DJ performance, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload your recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live camera or Mixxx session. Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
