This guide streams a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live using FFmpeg, H.264 video, and AAC audio. It does not take a YouTube watch-page playlist URL as its input. You provide FFmpeg with media files on your computer, join compatible files with its concat demuxer, then send the encoded output to YouTube’s ingest server.

What you need before streaming

  • A working FFmpeg build with the libx264 video encoder. FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder is included by default, but available encoders can vary by build. Check yours with ffmpeg -encoders.
  • Local video files you have the right to stream, plus a text file listing them.
  • A YouTube Live ingest URL and stream key from your live-stream setup.
  • A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the stream you configure. YouTube’s current RTMP bitrate and resolution guidance is not specified here, so use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for those values rather than treating this example as a complete preset.

FFmpeg’s command-line interface reads inputs supplied with -i; a YouTube watch-page playlist is not a built-in playlist input. For local files, FFmpeg documents file concatenation approaches in its concat FAQ.

Inspect and prepare the video files

Check each file’s streams

Use ffprobe to inspect codecs, dimensions, frame rate, audio sample rate, and stream count before building the playlist. For example:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i "/media/clip-01.mp4"

Repeat for each file. The concat demuxer expects compatible streams and time bases; it will not automatically reconcile different codecs, stream layouts, or timing. If the clips differ, normalize them to compatible media first, or use a concat-filter workflow that decodes and re-encodes the inputs. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the filter approach when re-encoding is needed.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

Create the concat list

Make a plain-text file named playlist.txt, with one entry per file in playback order:

file '/media/clip-01.mp4'
file '/media/clip-02.mp4'
file '/media/clip-03.mp4'

Use paths and quoting appropriate to your operating system. The example command below uses -safe 0 to allow paths that the concat demuxer would otherwise reject as unsafe; only include files and paths you trust.

Stream the playlist over RTMP

For compatible local files, this is a representative starting pattern. Replace the playlist path, ingest URL, and stream key with your own values:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -preset veryfast
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'

This is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested command or universal YouTube preset. Confirm option behavior against your installed FFmpeg build and use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP-specific rates and output requirements.

What the options do

  • -re reads the file input at its native rate for real-time output rather than sending it as fast as the machine can process it.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the concat input indefinitely.
  • -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt reads the listed files through the concat demuxer.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0? selects the first video stream and, if present, the first audio stream. The question mark makes the audio mapping optional; remove it only if you know every input has audio and want FFmpeg to require it.
  • -c:v libx264 encodes video as H.264. -pix_fmt yuv420p selects a widely used pixel format; -preset veryfast trades some compression efficiency for faster encoding.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 encodes AAC audio at the specified bitrate, 44.1 kHz sample rate, and two channels. FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder uses AAC-LC by default; setting a bitrate selects constant-bitrate mode.
  • -f flv packages the output for RTMP. Keep the RTMP ingest URL and key supplied by YouTube together as the destination, following the format YouTube gives you.

Keep the stream key private

Get the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a shared script, or expose it in logs or screenshots. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate, then check YouTube’s preview and stream-health status before making a broadcast public. Exact Studio labels and account eligibility can vary; consult YouTube’s current setup instructions for your account.

RTMP or HLS: choose the protocol deliberately

The command above is an RTMP pattern. HLS is a different ingest workflow, not the same command with an HLS URL substituted. YouTube’s HLS guidance requires MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST or PUT, and segment durations of one to four seconds. HLS supports H.264 and AAC; the guidance also lists other codecs. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation and YouTube Help on live encoder settings.

Workflow Packaging and setup What to configure
RTMP The example sends an FLV output to an RTMP ingest destination. It does not require you to create HLS segments or manage a rolling segment playlist. Use the RTMP ingest details YouTube provides and follow its current RTMP encoder guidance. Do not infer numeric RTMP bitrate, resolution, or keyframe recommendations from the HLS requirements.
HLS YouTube’s documented HLS workflow requires MPEG-TS segments, a rolling playlist, and HTTPS uploads using POST or PUT. Use one-to-four-second segments and keep no more than five segments outstanding in the rolling playlist. YouTube’s HLS guidance supports H.264 and AAC.

YouTube’s HLS page recommends stereo AAC audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Treat those figures as HLS guidance, not as a confirmed RTMP recommendation. The command’s audio options are an example configuration, not proof that the settings suit every RTMP stream.

Common problems and fixes

FFmpeg says a codec or encoder is unavailable

Your FFmpeg build may not include libx264. Check available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders and install a build that includes it, or select a video encoder supported by your build and the ingest requirements.

The concat input fails or the output breaks at a clip boundary

Check that the files have compatible streams and time bases. The concat demuxer does not normalize mismatched codecs, stream layouts, or timing. Normalize the files before concatenating, or switch to a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

FFmpeg reports that audio cannot be mapped

The optional mapping -map 0:a:0? allows the first file’s audio stream to be absent. If the playlist files have inconsistent audio streams, the concat input may still be incompatible. Check each file with ffprobe, then normalize the audio layout or prepare a consistent playlist.

YouTube receives no stream or the broadcast will not start

Verify that the destination combines the correct ingest URL and stream key, that the key has not been changed, and that FFmpeg is still running without an output error. Confirm the preview and health status in YouTube’s live setup before making the broadcast public.

The stream stutters or the machine cannot encode fast enough

-preset veryfast can reduce encoding work, but it does not guarantee real-time encoding on every computer. Check FFmpeg’s output for speed and errors, reduce the workload or output settings in line with YouTube’s current guidance, and verify that the upload connection can sustain the chosen stream.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Streaming a playlist does not grant permission to use its contents. Make sure you have the rights needed for the videos and music, including any rights required for live transmission. YouTube may detect or restrict protected material. Separately, a live stream’s compliance does not establish that a channel qualifies for monetization: review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies rather than assuming that looping or compiling videos makes reused material eligible.
