You can use a Raspberry Pi 5 as the source for a YouTube Live stream of local video files, but its documented 4K display and H.265 decoding capabilities do not prove that it can encode and send your particular playlist continuously at 4K and 60 fps. Build the stream around a YouTube-compatible encoder, test representative footage, and be ready to reduce resolution or frame rate if the Pi cannot sustain the output. This guide assumes “playlist” means video files stored locally—not a playlist hosted on YouTube.

What the Raspberry Pi 5 can—and cannot—be assumed to do

Raspberry Pi documentation says the Pi 5 has H.265 (HEVC) hardware decoding enabled by default and supports 4Kp60 display output. Those facts concern decoding and display; they do not establish sustained 4K60 encoding performance for a live stream. The available documentation does not establish a tested Pi 5 setup, measured performance, or success guarantee for this workload. Raspberry Pi configuration documentation

That distinction matters for a playlist stream: the device must play each local file, produce an encoder output YouTube accepts, and send it continuously over the network. A file that plays smoothly, or a desktop that displays 4K, does not by itself show that the full live-streaming chain can sustain 4K60.

Check YouTube’s 4K60 ingest requirements

YouTube’s US-English encoder-settings page lists the following bitrate figures for 2160p (4K) at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of Raspberry Pi performance. The page’s localized versions may show different recommendations, so check the current page for your region rather than treating these figures as universal. YouTube Live encoder settings

Output codec YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommendation
AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols, supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, and accepts up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Choose a codec and protocol that your actual streaming software can output reliably; YouTube’s acceptance of a codec does not mean your Pi’s chosen encoder can produce it at 4K60.

The recommended bitrate also has to be sustainable on the network connection sending the stream. Test the actual upload path under the conditions in which the stream will run; do not assume that a nominal connection speed or a successful short upload proves a continuous live stream will remain stable.

Prepare YouTube Live and the local playlist

  1. Enable live streaming in advance. Sign in to the YouTube account and start the live-stream enablement process before the day you need the stream. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  2. Decide what “playlist” means for this setup. This procedure is for local video files in a sequence. A normal playlist on the YouTube website is not something to assume the Pi can relay into a new YouTube Live stream.
  3. Choose and order the local files. Confirm that the files you intend to play are available to the Pi and that the selected playback and encoder software can handle their formats. This guide does not prescribe a particular Raspberry Pi OS version or playback application; no specific software configuration was established for this setup.
  4. Create the YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s live-stream workflow, create or schedule the stream and obtain its stream key and ingest details. YouTube’s encoder guide describes connecting an encoder using the stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, include it in a public command or screenshot, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
  5. Configure the encoder output. Select an ingest protocol YouTube accepts, a codec supported by the software and hardware you are actually using, the intended resolution and frame rate, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds). For 2160p60, use the bitrate guidance for the selected codec from the current YouTube settings page, noting the US-English values in the table above are page-specific.
  6. Connect the encoder to YouTube. Enter the stream key and ingest information in the chosen encoder, then start sending the stream. Follow that encoder’s documentation for its own interface and playlist controls; settings and labels vary by application.
  7. Start the local playlist and verify the live output. Confirm that files advance in the intended order and that YouTube receives the stream at the expected resolution and frame rate. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages while the stream is running rather than relying only on the Pi’s local preview.

No specific FFmpeg or OBS command, Raspberry Pi OS workflow, or encoder configuration has been established for this article. A copied command would imply a tested software, codec, and hardware combination that is not documented here. Use the instructions for the encoder you select, and validate the complete chain on your own Pi before relying on it.

Test the Pi before committing to 4K60

Run a representative test before scheduling an important or long stream. YouTube advises testing in advance with similar audio and motion, then monitoring stream health and messages. A static clip is not a useful stand-in if the real playlist contains fast movement, detailed textures, or demanding audio. YouTube’s encoder settings and testing guidance

  • Use the actual Pi, storage, playback software, encoder, network connection, and output settings you intend to use.
  • Include representative video motion and audio, and let the test run long enough to reveal problems that may not appear immediately.
  • Check YouTube’s received resolution and frame rate, stream-health status, and any messages about the incoming stream.
  • Watch for dropped frames, interrupted playback, overheating, or a stream that degrades over time. The available sources do not establish a specific temperature limit or a reliable 4K60 duration for the Pi 5.
  • If the Pi cannot sustain the output, lower the resolution or frame rate and repeat the test. Do not describe 4K60 as supported by your setup until the complete stream has passed a representative test.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check Next step
YouTube does not receive a stream Confirm live streaming is enabled, the encoder is running, and the stream key and ingest details match the YouTube stream. Check the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s live-stream messages. If live streaming was only just enabled, allow for YouTube’s stated first-time enablement window of up to 24 hours.
YouTube reports a stream-health problem Compare the encoder’s protocol, codec, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s accepted settings. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds; then review the current YouTube settings page for the selected codec.
The picture stutters or frames are dropped Check whether the Pi can sustain the selected resolution and frame rate while playing the actual files and encoding. Check the network and YouTube’s stream-health messages too. Test again at a lower resolution or frame rate. Display or decoding support alone does not demonstrate live-encoding capacity.
The stream starts but fails during a longer run Look for a problem that appears over time, including interrupted file playback, unstable upload, or overheating. Repeat a longer representative test, monitor stream health throughout, and reduce the output demands if the failure persists. No specific Pi 5 runtime or thermal guarantee is established here.
The wrong file plays, or the playlist stops advancing Check the order and availability of the local files and the playlist behavior of the selected playback software. Test the full sequence, including the transition from the last file back to the first if you expect continuous looping; confirm the encoder continues sending during transitions.

Protect the channel and the stream key

Only stream video and audio that you have the rights or permission to broadcast. A file being stored locally, or being available to play, does not by itself establish permission to stream it. Check the rights for every item in the playlist before going live. Keep the YouTube stream key private; if it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live-stream controls and update the encoder.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube Live stream without leaving the Pi running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
