To stream a folder of videos to YouTube Live in alphabetical order, first generate a playlist whose entries are explicitly sorted the way you want, then play that playlist in an encoder such as OBS and send the encoder output to YouTube using the matching ingestion URL and stream key. OBS’s VLC Video source can play an ordered playlist, but it does not automatically scan a folder, define what “alphabetical” means, or add newly created files to a playlist.

How the setup works

The workflow has four parts: a folder of compatible files, a deliberately sorted playlist, a player/encoder that reads that playlist, and a YouTube Live ingestion connection. Alphabetical order is determined when you build the playlist—not by YouTube.

  1. Choose the exact sorting rule and create an ordered playlist from the files.
  2. Load the playlist in a playlist-capable source, such as OBS’s VLC Video source, with shuffle disabled.
  3. Configure a YouTube Live event or stream and enter its current ingestion address and stream key in the encoder.
  4. Test playback, transitions, looping, reconnects, and file changes before relying on unattended operation.

The official documentation establishes the relevant OBS source and YouTube ingestion options, but it does not provide a tested, end-to-end recipe for every server operating system, encoder version, or collection of files. Startup at boot, automatic recovery, directory watching, and gapless transitions depend on how you deploy the components.

Choose what “alphabetical” means

Before making the playlist, decide whether filenames should be sorted lexicographically or with a natural, case-insensitive sort. These rules differ for names containing numbers: lexicographic sorting commonly places clip10.mp4 before clip2.mp4, while natural sorting treats the numbers as values and puts clip2.mp4 first. Case handling can also vary between sorting tools.

Make that choice explicit in the program or script that enumerates the folder, then save the resulting ordered file list as the playlist your player will read. Neither OBS’s media-source documentation nor YouTube defines a folder-sorting rule. OBS’s VLC source supports a list of media files; the cited documentation does not establish recursive folder scanning, watching for new files, or automatically rebuilding the playlist.

Prepare the server and playlist source

Use OBS with the VLC Video source

OBS documents the VLC Video source as a playlist-capable source, similar in concept to an image slideshow. It requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS documents support for common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for its Media Source, while the VLC Video source uses VLC libraries for broader media support. Compatibility still depends on the actual file and installed codecs.

  4. Set Shuffle Playlist to off. OBS documents shuffle as off by default for this source, but verify the setting.
  5. Set Loop Playlist according to whether playback should restart after the last item. OBS documents this option as on by default; verify it for your intended behavior.
  6. Check that the video and audio appear correctly in the OBS preview, and test the end of the playlist.

OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the source and its playlist options. It does not establish whether transitions between your specific files will be gapless.

Make unattended operation part of the design

A server-based stream needs more than a playlist that works while someone is watching it. Confirm that your chosen encoder can launch after a reboot, continue without an interactive desktop session if that is required, restart after a process failure, reconnect after a network interruption, and reload the playlist when files change. Those behaviors are deployment-specific; do not assume they are provided by the VLC playlist source itself.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, configure the Live event or stream and obtain the current ingestion endpoint and stream key. If you automate event and stream setup, YouTube’s LiveStreams API reference documents stream ingestion addresses and stream names.
  2. Select an ingestion protocol supported by your encoder. For a conventional software-encoder setup where low latency is desired, RTMPS is a documented option. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP sent through SSL; use the correct RTMPS endpoint and port 443, as explained in Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
  3. Enter the matching endpoint and stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private: treat it as a credential, and do not place it in a public script, repository, or log.
  4. Start the encoder and verify that YouTube receives the stream before you make the event public or rely on it for continuous playback.

YouTube also supports HLS and DASH ingestion, but these are not interchangeable settings. The protocol comparison describes the supported choices. Do not assume a general-purpose player or encoder can send YouTube-compatible HLS or DASH merely because it can play media.

When HLS is the right choice

HLS uses video segments rather than a continuous RTMP-style stream and therefore has higher latency. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies YouTube-specific requirements: segments must be 1–4 seconds long and use TS format; requests must use HTTPS POST or PUT; byte ranges are unsupported; and the rolling playlist must have no more than five outstanding segments. These are HLS ingestion constraints, not settings to apply to an ordinary RTMPS workflow. YouTube states: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.”

Test the full sequence before leaving it unattended

Start with a private or unlisted event and verify each behavior that matters for your channel. This is a recommended validation process, not a guarantee that all files or server configurations will behave identically.

  • Order: Confirm the first, middle, and final playlist entries play in the intended sequence, including filenames with numbers and mixed capitalization.
  • Media: Check video, audio, aspect ratio, and transitions across representative files. A successful preview of one file does not prove every file is compatible.
  • Playlist end: Observe what happens after the final item, including whether looping restarts where expected.
  • Changes: Add, rename, and remove a test file and determine whether your playlist-generation process and player reflect the changes. Do not assume a live folder watcher exists.
  • Connection recovery: Test what happens if the encoder process or network connection is interrupted, then confirm whether manual action is needed to resume.
  • Unattended launch: If the server restarts, verify that the encoder and the correct scene and playlist come back as intended.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

Symptom What to check Practical fix
Files play in an unexpected order The playlist order, case handling, numeric filename sorting, or an enabled shuffle setting. Regenerate the ordered playlist using the intended sorting rule, reload it, and confirm Shuffle Playlist is off.
A VLC Video source is missing or will not load Whether VLC is installed and whether its architecture matches OBS. Install the matching VLC version; OBS specifically notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
YouTube does not receive the encoder output Whether the endpoint matches the selected protocol, the stream key is current, and the RTMPS endpoint uses port 443 when using RTMPS. Recheck the event’s current ingestion details in YouTube Studio and the encoder’s protocol-specific configuration.
HLS ingest is rejected or behaves incorrectly Segment duration and format, HTTPS methods, byte-range use, and the number of outstanding segments. Follow YouTube’s HLS requirements: 1–4 second TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and at most five outstanding segments.
New files do not appear in playback Whether your playlist is static or regenerated by a separate process. Rebuild or refresh the playlist using your own automation, then confirm how the player handles reloading it.
The stream does not resume after an interruption Whether reconnect and process-restart behavior is configured in your deployment. Test and configure recovery in the selected encoder or server process; the cited playlist documentation does not establish automatic recovery for this deployment.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Streaming prerecorded files does not remove the need to have the rights to the video and audio. Before broadcasting, confirm that you own or are licensed to use every element, including music, and review YouTube’s current rules for live streaming and monetization. A playlist’s technical ability to loop a file says nothing about whether that file is permitted on your channel.
