You can stream a folder of videos to YouTube Live from a headless Ubuntu VPS by arranging the files into an explicit playlist, having FFmpeg read and send them to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, and checking the preview and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. A VPS needs no desktop streaming app for this approach. The playlist and service setup below is an implementation pattern, not a YouTube-prescribed end-to-end recipe; test it with your own files and server before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • An Ubuntu VPS with the video files stored locally, enough disk space, and a network route that can sustain your chosen upload bitrate.
  • FFmpeg installed with support for the protocols and codecs you plan to use. Ubuntu package versions and build options vary, so verify your installed build rather than assuming every package supports every protocol.
  • A YouTube channel able to start a live stream, with access to YouTube Live Control Room.
  • An ordered playlist and an output profile that YouTube accepts and your VPS can encode or pass through reliably.

The exact Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, file formats, VPS CPU capacity, network quality, account eligibility, and desired broadcast length are not specified here. Treat the commands and service arrangement as a pattern to adapt and validate, not a guarantee that arbitrary files will play continuously.

Choose a playlist and output profile

Make playback order explicit

Do not rely on a shell wildcard to create the order you intend. Make a playlist in the order viewers should see the videos, and confirm every referenced path is correct. A common FFmpeg approach uses a concat-demuxer list file, but list syntax and compatibility depend on your files and FFmpeg build; YouTube does not prescribe this playlist method.

Files with different codecs, dimensions, frame rates, time bases, or audio layouts may not join cleanly when stream-copied. Test transitions between files. If they are incompatible, normalize or re-encode them to a consistent output profile. Re-encoding offers more control over bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes but requires VPS CPU; copying compatible encoded streams can reduce CPU demand. These are engineering trade-offs, not a promise that either method will suit every file.

Use YouTube’s published encoder guidance

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. A conservative common choice for broad compatibility is H.264 video with AAC audio, but confirm that your source and FFmpeg build support the selected profile.

Example output YouTube minimum video bitrate YouTube recommended video bitrate
1080p30, H.264 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p30, AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
720p30, H.264 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published ingest figures, accessed in 2026, not a measurement of your VPS. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate based on the source material and a sustained upload test. YouTube lists stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps, and 5.1 audio at 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Its recommendations can change, so consult the current YouTube Live encoder settings when configuring a stream.

Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. In the stream settings, copy the ingest URL and stream key. Use the exact RTMPS URL shown for your stream; YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection.
  3. Keep the key secret. It is a credential that lets an encoder transmit to your channel. Do not put it in a public script or repository. Restrict access to any configuration file that contains it, and rotate the key if it is exposed.

YouTube’s API describes the ingest address as the primary destination and the stream name as the credential assigned to the stream. Some encoders accept those separately; others expect them joined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the format required by your FFmpeg invocation and the values shown in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation for endpoint terminology and stream health fields.

If FFmpeg cannot connect, verify that you copied the RTMPS address correctly and that the installed build supports the required TLS/RTMPS protocol. YouTube advises checking that the address uses rtmps and, if needed, trying port 443; whether that is configurable depends on the endpoint and your setup. Do not expose the key while debugging.

Run FFmpeg on the VPS

Adapt the command to the playlist and files

FFmpeg can read local media and send an encoded stream to YouTube, but there is no single safe command for every folder. The exact invocation depends on whether your playlist files are already compatible and whether you are copying streams or transcoding them. A third-party Ubuntu example demonstrates an FFmpeg-only pipeline and a systemd service, but it is an example architecture rather than a verified universal recipe.

  1. Put the videos and an explicit playlist on the VPS. Use stable absolute paths and check that the service account can read them.
  2. Decide whether to stream-copy compatible files or re-encode to one consistent profile. If transcoding, set the output resolution, frame rate, CBR video bitrate, two-second keyframe interval, supported audio codec, and audio settings to match your chosen YouTube profile and server capacity.
  3. Configure FFmpeg with the exact RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. Keep credentials in a restricted configuration or secret mechanism rather than committing them to source control.
  4. Start FFmpeg in the foreground first and inspect its output. This makes connection, file-read, codec, and encoding errors easier to see than when the process is hidden behind a service manager.

Do not assume that stream copy works across a mixed folder, or that a successful FFmpeg process means YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Confirm the actual output in YouTube Live Control Room before scheduling or relying on a long broadcast.

Keep the process running unattended

For an unattended VPS workflow, a systemd service can start FFmpeg at boot and restart the local process if it exits. Use a dedicated service account, grant it only the file and configuration access it needs, and avoid placing the stream key in broadly readable unit files or logs. The exact unit configuration depends on the paths, user, playlist, and FFmpeg command you chose.

Preflight and monitor the broadcast

  1. Start the stream and wait for YouTube Live Control Room to show incoming video.
  2. Check the preview for motion, correct resolution and frame rate, and audible sound. If the playlist has multiple files, inspect transitions between them.
  3. Review YouTube’s stream health messages and correct flagged configuration or quality problems before relying on the stream.
  4. During operation, watch both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s health status; they show different parts of the pipeline.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages. Its API lists issues including low or high video bitrate, missing audio, unsupported audio codec, audio sample-rate problems, keyframe interval problems, frame-rate mismatch, and unsuitable stream configuration.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube does not receive data Check the exact RTMPS URL and stream key, confirm the FFmpeg build supports the protocol, and verify the VPS firewall and network path. If there is a connection or certificate problem, verify the URL uses RTMPS and check whether port 443 is appropriate for the endpoint.
Preview has no sound Confirm the source actually contains audio and that the output maps a supported audio stream. Check the codec and sample rate; YouTube identifies missing audio, unsupported audio codecs, and sample-rate problems as possible issues.
Video buffers or YouTube reports bitrate trouble Compare the output bitrate, resolution, and frame rate with YouTube’s current encoder settings. Check sustained VPS upload capacity; a recommendation is not proof that your server or route can sustain it.
Keyframe or frame-rate warning Check the encoded output rather than only the input files. Use CBR, target a two-second keyframe interval without exceeding four seconds, and align the output frame rate with the selected profile.
Playback breaks or changes at file boundaries Compare codecs, dimensions, frame rates, and audio layouts of adjacent files. Test each transition and normalize incompatible inputs to a consistent profile if needed.
FFmpeg starts again but the stream is not healthy Systemd may have restarted the local process, but that does not establish that YouTube resumed receiving a valid feed. Check the Live Control Room preview and health messages, then diagnose the endpoint, key, and output configuration.
