To stream a folder of MP4 videos to YouTube Live from a Vultr server, install FFmpeg, put the videos in the order you want in a concat-demuxer list, then send that list to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Whether you can use stream copy or need to re-encode depends on the videos’ codecs and properties.
What you need before starting
- A Linux Vultr server with FFmpeg installed and enough CPU capacity for your chosen encoding method.
- The MP4 files stored on the server, readable by the account that will run FFmpeg.
- Outbound network access to the YouTube ingest endpoint.
- A YouTube live stream or scheduled event, plus its ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
Vultr’s published FFmpeg installation guide uses Ubuntu 20.04 as its example and also lists Debian 10, CentOS 8, and Fedora 32. Those are dated examples, not current installation recommendations. Follow the package instructions for the Linux distribution and version installed on your instance: Vultr’s FFmpeg guide.
The available guidance does not establish a current Vultr instance size, egress price, or bandwidth allowance. Check the current plan details and estimate your stream’s sustained bitrate and duration before choosing an instance.

file '/srv/videos/01-intro.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/02-main.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/03-outro.mp4'
Save it, for example, as /srv/videos/playlist.txt. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads the listed files as one concatenated input. Avoid filenames that need complex quoting or escaping. Files with incompatible stream properties may not join cleanly, and a playlist should be tested rather than assumed to provide seamless transitions. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Choose stream copy or re-encoding
Use stream copy when the files are compatible
With -c copy, FFmpeg copies the compressed audio and video packets without decoding and encoding them again. This uses less processing and preserves the existing encoded streams, but it does not let you resize, filter, or otherwise change the media. It can fail if the source streams or their information are unsuitable for the output container. Check the files and test the actual playlist before relying on this method.

Re-encode when you need compatible output or changed settings
Transcoding can produce a consistent output format and lets you change resolution, frame rate, or apply filters. It uses CPU and another lossy encode may reduce quality. The server must keep up with the chosen output in real time; watch FFmpeg’s progress and test under the workload you expect.
The command below is an illustrative re-encoding starting point, not a tested or universal configuration. Substitute the exact RTMPS ingest URL and stream key arrangement supplied by YouTube, and choose settings that fit the source material, stream target, and server capacity.

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/videos/playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
Here, -re reads the input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible; -f concat selects the concat demuxer; -safe 0 permits the absolute paths in the list; and -i names that list. The video and audio options are example values only. In particular, the sample’s bitrate and keyframe setting should not be treated as the right choice for every resolution, frame rate, or source.
For compatible streams and no need to change the media, the output portion may instead use -c copy. FFmpeg documents stream copy as a path that omits decoding and encoding, while noting it depends on stream suitability for the output. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation and test the complete playlist.

Match output settings to YouTube and your source
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. For H.264, its recommended video bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or proof that a particular Vultr instance can sustain the stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Output target | YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
Choose a frame rate and resolution that make sense for the source rather than upscaling or increasing frame rate without a reason. The example command’s -g 60 corresponds to a 2-second GOP only at 30 fps; at 60 fps, a 2-second interval would require a GOP of 120 frames. Verify the frame rate, keyframe interval, codec, and bitrate against the current YouTube guidance for your target. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream and running a speed test. Its encoder settings guidance is available in YouTube Help.

Set up YouTube ingest and start the broadcast
- Create or schedule the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the event you intend to use.
- Copy the encoder details. Copy the exact stream URL and stream key displayed there. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection using TLS/SSL. If Live Control Room displays RTMP by default, select RTMPS and use the URL shown for that protocol; do not guess or reconstruct the endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and its encoder setup instructions.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password. Do not place a real key in a public script, command example, screenshot, shell history, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Start FFmpeg and check the preview. Run the command with the current event’s ingest details. Wait for the preview and stream health indicators in Live Control Room; correct any warnings before making the broadcast public.
- End the event deliberately. For a scheduled stream, use Live Control Room to end it and stop the encoder feed as directed there. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.
Make the playlist repeat
The concat list shown above plays once from its first entry through its last. It does not by itself repeat the folder indefinitely. For a finite broadcast, run it as shown and end the event when playback finishes. For an unattended loop, you need a repeat strategy and a process supervisor or other restart plan; test how it behaves at the end of the list and after network or process interruptions. Do not assume that reconnecting FFmpeg automatically resumes at the intended video or position.
Troubleshooting
FFmpeg cannot open a file
- Confirm the path in the list is correct and absolute.
- Check file permissions for the user running FFmpeg.
- Keep list entries simply quoted as shown, especially if filenames contain spaces or special characters.
The concat input fails or transitions are broken
- Inspect the files’ video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and other stream properties; concat-demuxer use and stream copy are sensitive to compatibility.
- Try re-encoding to a consistent output if the sources differ, then verify CPU use and playback with the full playlist.
- Do not assume every MP4 file contains the same codecs or that concatenation guarantees seamless transitions.
YouTube does not receive the stream
- Verify that the event is ready and that you used its exact ingest URL and current stream key.
- Confirm RTMPS is selected when you intend to use it, and check outbound connectivity from the server.
- Check FFmpeg output for connection or encoding errors, then review the preview and health messages in Live Control Room.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder configuration.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or reports poor health
- Compare the configured bitrate with sustained server upload capacity; a speed test and a real-stream test are more useful than assuming the plan will handle it.
- Check whether the server can encode in real time. If not, lower the target settings or use stream copy if the files are compatible and no output changes are needed.
- Use YouTube’s current settings guidance for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec, and inspect its health indicators during a representative test.
The video ends instead of continuing
The playlist is a one-pass input unless you arrange for it to repeat. Decide whether the event should end after one playback or continue, and test the chosen repeat and restart behavior before leaving it unattended.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than managing a Vultr instance and FFmpeg process, StreamNeo keeps a channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
