To stream a radio station’s playlist continuously on YouTube Live, run the playlist through a playback source and encoder, then send that encoder’s feed to YouTube Live Control Room using the stream’s server URL and stream key. YouTube provides the live ingest; playlist looping and automation must come from your playback system or a suitable service. Plan rights and a separate archive before going live: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
What you need for a continuous radio stream
The signal path is: playlist or station program source → encoder → YouTube Live. Your source supplies the audio and, if desired, accompanying visuals. The encoder packages the feed for YouTube. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover creating or reusing a stream and connecting an encoder; they do not describe a built-in YouTube control that loops a playlist indefinitely. - A playlist or continuous program source capable of playing the station’s recordings in the intended order and repeating them.
- An encoder, either software or hardware, connected to that source.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips
- A rights-cleared program and an archive plan, including a local recording if retaining the broadcast matters.
A station may already have a playback computer, mixer, and encoder. If the mixer’s output does not connect directly to the streaming computer, an audio interface may be useful, but it is not required for every setup; choose one that matches the mixer output and computer inputs. Clear the music and program rights first
Before sending a playlist live, check that your station has the necessary rights for each recording, song, voice, and other program element. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights, including music rights, and to comply with applicable legal requirements. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can interrupt or terminate a stream, and a claim may also affect an archive. If you have a license for third-party material, that alone may not prevent an interruption: the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Set up the playlist and YouTube encoder
- Configure the source. Set the station playback system or other source to play the intended program playlist and repeat it without requiring a manual restart. Check the transition between the end and beginning of the playlist, and listen for gaps, abrupt level changes, or silence.
- Connect the source to the encoder. Feed the program audio into your encoder, directly or through the station mixer and compatible audio hardware. Add a visual element if your YouTube presentation needs one. Confirm that the encoder receives the correct input before scheduling the stream.
- Create or reuse a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The exact encoder controls depend on the software or hardware you use. - Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who do not need access. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings and update the encoder with the new key. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips
- Start the encoder early and check the preview. Send a representative test signal before the program is due to begin. In Live Control Room, verify that the preview has the expected picture and sound before you proceed with the broadcast.
- Check the public playback path. Once live, listen to the public watch-page player as well as the local mixer output. Check on a mobile device too; this can reveal a silent, distorted, or incorrectly routed public feed that is not obvious at the console.
YouTube recommends testing the full streaming setup, monitoring stream quality, and checking backup or failover arrangements where available. For a radio station, verify the audio at the public player, not only at the playback computer or encoder. YouTube’s streaming tips
Make a dependable archive plan
Do not treat one uninterrupted day-long YouTube broadcast as a dependable archive file. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours, but cautions that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. The Help page does not promise that every stream under 12 hours will be archived, so keep your own recording if the program must be preserved. YouTube’s archive guidance

- Record the program locally and confirm that the file is growing during the broadcast.
- If you rely on YouTube archives, plan separate broadcasts that end before they reach 12 hours, rather than leaving one stream running past the threshold.
- After broadcasts finish, organize their archives and highlight clips into a separate YouTube playlist. Keep that completed-program archive distinct from the current live stream. YouTube’s live-stream promotion guidance
Choose who operates the stream
A station-operated computer and encoder can make sense when the station already has a reliable playback system and someone can monitor it. Cloud automation is another approach for prerecorded programming, but assess a provider against the station’s format, playlist behavior, recovery needs, rights obligations, archive process, account access, and current terms. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the ingest workflow; it does not endorse a particular automation provider or establish any provider’s performance.
For either approach, decide who checks the stream overnight and on weekends, how a local power or internet failure is handled, whether the playlist resumes automatically, how recordings are segmented, and who can access the stream key. These operational details matter independently of whether the encoder is local or cloud-based.

YouTube does not receive a signal
Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and stream key for the selected stream, that the encoder is running, and that it is receiving the intended audio/video inputs. If a key may have been exposed or replaced, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.

The preview appears, but the public stream is silent or wrong
Check the source-to-mixer and mixer-to-encoder routing, then monitor the public watch page and a mobile playback device. A healthy local output does not prove the encoder is receiving the same signal.
The playlist stops or does not repeat
Check the playback system’s repeat or automation settings and test the transition at the end of the list before relying on it unattended. Playlist repetition is handled by the source or automation system, not by a documented native YouTube playlist-to-Live looping control.

The stream is interrupted by a copyright warning
Read the Live Control Room notice and identify the matched material. Confirm that the relevant rights cover livestreaming on YouTube and the relevant territories; if you have a license, ask the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID. Do not assume a license prevents automated matching. YouTube’s copyright guidance
The broadcast has no YouTube archive
Check whether the stream ran longer than 12 hours; YouTube says a longer stream may not be captured. For future broadcasts, keep a local recording and use separate completed streams under 12 hours if you want YouTube’s archive feature to be available. YouTube’s archive guidance
The stream fails when the station is unattended
Check the playback source, encoder, and network separately, then test the station’s backup or failover plan. YouTube recommends testing failover and monitoring the stream; a plan should account for local power and connectivity as well as the stream itself. YouTube’s streaming tips
