To stream a college radio station on YouTube around the clock, route the station’s audio and a cleared visual feed through an encoder to YouTube Live, then keep that encoder running and monitor the broadcast. Before going live, confirm that the station has permission for a YouTube simulcast—and for any replay or archive. A campus, terrestrial, or existing web-radio license does not by itself establish those rights.

1. Clear the station’s music and other content for YouTube

Make rights clearance the first step, not a troubleshooting step after launch. Ask the relevant rights holders or licensors whether the station’s music and other third-party material may be transmitted live on YouTube, in the territories where viewers may access it, and retained in an archived replay if you plan to keep one. The answer depends on the station’s repertoire, contracts, country, and archive plans; no general rule establishes clearance for a particular college station.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder, interruption, or termination. YouTube also warns that holding a license may not prevent interruption if the rights owner uses Content ID and has not allowlisted the channel. Ask the rights owner or licensor about allowlisting before the broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance and its copyright overview.

Do not assume that a station’s educational or noncommercial status resolves the question. A U.S. statutory provision for certain noncommercial educational broadcast stations addresses a specific terrestrial retransmission context; it is not blanket permission for a YouTube simulcast. Have the institution’s rights or legal staff confirm what applies to the station’s actual programming and distribution plan. See 17 U.S.C. § 118.

2. Enable YouTube Live before the scheduled launch

Verify the YouTube channel and enable live streaming ahead of time. YouTube for Artists advises music channels to verify the account at least 24 hours before going live. That lead time is an activation requirement to plan around, not a guarantee that rights or technical checks are complete. Follow YouTube for Artists’ guidance for going live as a music channel.

3. Build an audio-and-visual feed

The broadcast needs both the station’s audio and a video signal. Route the station output—such as the on-air mixer’s program feed—into an encoder, and pair it with a station image, visualizer, or other visual for which the station has permission. Set levels so the audio is clear and not clipping, and confirm the visual appears as intended. The exact audio interface, computer, or hardware encoder depends on the station’s existing equipment, operating system, staffing, and reliability needs; the available YouTube guidance does not establish one best hardware model.

YouTube distinguishes a broadcast event from the audio-video stream that feeds it, and its API documentation includes a 24/7 live-feed use case. For a station, that means configuring the YouTube broadcast and supplying it with a continuous encoder feed; creating the event alone does not keep audio on air. See YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide.

4. Choose and configure an encoder

Mobile or webcam streaming

YouTube describes mobile and webcam streaming as simpler options. They may be suitable for a straightforward, short broadcast, but an always-on radio feed needs a stable audio-video signal and a setup that can remain in operation. YouTube’s music guidance presents an encoder as the more customizable and controllable approach for live music. Choose based on whether the option can accept the station’s audio source, produce the visual feed, and remain reliable for the intended duration.

Encoder-based streaming

Use a computer-based or hardware encoder that supports the ingest method selected in YouTube Studio. Configure it to send the station audio and visual feed to the channel’s live broadcast, then verify that the Studio preview receives both. Do not assume that format requirements for one ingest protocol apply to every encoder setup: YouTube’s HLS instructions, for example, specify an M2TS container with H.264 or HEVC video and AAC audio, but those are HLS-specific requirements. Check the documentation for the selected protocol and encoder in YouTube’s ingestion-protocol guide.

5. Test the complete chain before going public

  1. Confirm the rights and channel setup: Make sure the intended live transmission and any planned archive are cleared, and that any required Content ID allowlisting has been arranged.
  2. Check the feed in the encoder: Confirm the program audio reaches the encoder, the chosen visual is present, and levels are intelligible without clipping.
  3. Check YouTube Studio: Confirm the broadcast is receiving the encoder feed and that both sound and picture are correct.
  4. Test continuity and recovery: Simulate an encoder or network interruption where practical, and learn how the station will restart the feed and verify that the broadcast has resumed.
  5. Assign monitoring: Decide who will check the live output and YouTube Studio, and who can respond if the feed fails or YouTube flags content.

For an around-the-clock broadcast, a successful initial connection is not the same as a tested operating plan. The station needs a way to notice interruptions and restore the feed.

6. Monitor the live stream and handle interruptions

Check the live output and YouTube Studio during operation. If YouTube interrupts or terminates the stream, inspect the dashboard for copyright or Community Guidelines issues and follow the listed resolution steps. A rights-related interruption may require contacting the relevant rights owner about the matched material or channel allowlisting; simply restarting without addressing the cause may not prevent another interruption.
