You can run a classical-music radio-style livestream on YouTube by clearing rights for both the music and its specific recording, enabling YouTube Live, and sending audio with a continuous visual feed through an encoder. The important limitation is that YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast: streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so plan for monitored turnover rather than assuming a stream will run indefinitely.
Before you start: clear the music and recording rights
Classical repertoire and a recording of that repertoire are separate works for copyright purposes. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that they may have different owners and may need separate licenses. A public-domain composition does not automatically make a modern performance or recording free to use, and permission to use a recording does not by itself clear the underlying composition. See the U.S. Copyright Office guidance for musicians; it is U.S.-focused, not a universal legal ruling.
For every track, confirm that your permissions cover livestreaming on YouTube, any archive viewers can replay, and the territories where your broadcast will be available. Record the composition, recording, rights owner, permitted uses, territory, expiry date and attribution requirements. Those details help you manage the catalogue; the actual requirements depend on your agreements and applicable law.
Plan for YouTube Content ID checks
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. When it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and issue a warning; if the matched content continues, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption. For licensed third-party material, YouTube says to ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Arrange that before launch, and confirm which channel is being allowlisted. Read YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Choose an encoder and plan for continuity
YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Its encoder guide describes encoder workflows and verified options; it does not prescribe a particular device for an audio-first classical station.
| Approach | When it may fit | Continuity consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder | A modest setup using a computer; OBS is an open-source software option, with support information at the OBS Project help portal. | The computer and encoder software need to remain operational during the broadcast. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | A dedicated production setup where an appliance suits the available audio and video connections. | Check YouTube compatibility and the device’s audio-input needs; no particular model is established as best for this use. |
Both approaches send an audio-and-visual stream to YouTube. For an audio-led station, prepare a visual feed—such as a station title card or other material you have permission to use—rather than expecting an audio-only connection to appear as a finished radio broadcast. Test audio levels, visual continuity and what happens after a connection interruption before announcing a public launch.

Set up YouTube Live and connect the encoder
- Check eligibility. Verify the channel and make sure it has had no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup guide.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go live, then create a new stream or schedule one. Review the stream details and audience settings before sharing its watch page.
- Copy the connection details. In the Live Control Room, get YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Send the prepared audio and visual feed. For a scheduled stream, wait for YouTube’s preview and use the Live Control Room’s go-live step when ready. Confirm that the intended audio and visuals are reaching the preview before the audience joins.
- Monitor the live broadcast. Assign someone or establish a reliable process to watch for silence, a frozen visual, encoder disconnection, Content ID notices and the need to end or restart the stream.
Build a turnover plan instead of promising one endless stream
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guide does not document guaranteed uninterrupted 24-hour streaming. Treat the archive limit as an operational planning constraint: decide who or what will manage the end of a broadcast, the next stream, audience communication and archive handling. Scheduling may help organize and promote a broadcast, but it does not establish that a single stream can remain live indefinitely.
- Set a handover time before the broadcast starts, with an operator responsible for checking the encoder and Live Control Room.
- Prepare the next stream or restart steps in advance, and tell listeners where to find the next broadcast if a transition is visible to them.
- Review each archive and its music permissions; rights for a live use should not be assumed to cover replay availability.
- Keep a recovery plan for encoder or network failure and for YouTube interruptions caused by a copyright match.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live around the clock. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is an alternative for pre-recorded programming, not a way to broadcast live camera footage.
