For the most dependable handoff, combine the worship clips into one continuous video file before the service, then play that file through the system feeding your stream. A playlist is easier to assemble, but its transitions are not documented as guaranteed gapless. Whichever method you choose, preview every transition on the actual playback system before the service.
Why one prepared file helps
When separate clips play in sequence, the media player has to finish one file and start the next. Joining them beforehand removes that inter-file handoff from the live playback path. It reduces one possible source of silence, but does not guarantee a gapless result: source timing, duration metadata, edits at clip boundaries and the playback chain can still affect what you hear.
For compatible inputs, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer sequences files and adjusts timestamps so each follows the preceding one. FFmpeg notes that gaps can occur if the streams do not have exactly the same length, and warns that inaccurate stored durations can cause artifacts.
Choose a joining method
| Method | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg concat demuxer | Sequences compatible files without re-encoding in suitable circumstances. | Inputs need the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Unequal stream lengths or incorrect duration metadata can cause gaps or artifacts. |
| FFmpeg concat filter | Joins clips in a filter-based workflow when re-encoding is needed. | Review the encoded output’s quality and listen across every boundary. |
| OBS VLC Video playlist | Plays ordered media items in an OBS source. | VLC must be installed. OBS documents playlist support but does not promise silence-free transitions. |
| Church presentation software schedule | Church Presenter supports local media, preview and scheduled items. | Scheduling helps prepare and recall media; its guide does not promise silence-free transitions between separate videos. |
FFmpeg explains the distinction between the demuxer and filter approaches in its file-concatenation FAQ. Which method fits depends on whether the clips’ streams match and whether you want a single prepared file or a playlist.

Prepare the worship set before service
- Set the order. Arrange the clips as they should play during the service. Listen to the beginning and end of each for silence or unwanted audio that is already part of the recording; joining files will not remove it.
- Check the inputs. For the concat demuxer, confirm the clips have the same streams, codecs and time bases, and that their duration metadata is reliable. If they differ, use a filter-based workflow that re-encodes as needed rather than assuming a direct join will work cleanly.
- Join or build the playlist. Create one output file with the suitable FFmpeg method, or use an OBS VLC Video playlist if you prefer separate items. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the playlist source and its VLC requirement.
- Play the result through the service chain. Use the same computer, audio routing and streaming setup intended for the service. Listen closely across every former clip boundary; a file that seems fine in an editor may behave differently in the actual playback path.
- Make corrections before going live. If a pause remains, identify whether it is in the media itself, at a join, or in the playback chain. Adjust the edit or conversion workflow as appropriate, render again, and check the boundary on the service system.
If you keep the clips as a playlist
A playlist can be convenient when clips need to remain separate or be selected individually. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and arrange the media items in the desired order; VLC must be installed. Do not treat playlist support as a promise of gapless audio. Test the exact files and playback setup, especially if uninterrupted music or speech matters.
Church Presenter is another option for local or network media, preview and scheduling. Its guide recommends loading media before the service because VLC may briefly read a file header the first time it opens a file. Pre-loading can make preparation more predictable, but scheduling separate videos is not documented as eliminating transition pauses. See Church Presenter’s guide to playing audio and video and its product overview.
