You can stream a recorded church service as a scheduled YouTube Live event by creating the event in YouTube Studio, configuring encoder software on a Raspberry Pi to send the recording to YouTube with the event’s stream URL and stream key, then checking the preview before selecting Go live. YouTube documents the ingest workflow and compatible encoder settings; Raspberry Pi documents relevant H.264 capabilities, but that does not certify a particular Pi, software image, or command as a ready-made setup. Rehearse with the actual service file before relying on it.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A final recording saved as a local file the Pi’s encoder software can read.
- A YouTube channel able to create live streams, and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Encoder software on the Pi that can read and pace the file as a live source and send it to YouTube’s ingest server.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the selected resolution and bitrate, plus time to run a full rehearsal.
- A person available to monitor the YouTube preview, audio, video, and playback during the event.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses an event-specific stream URL and stream key. Its guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on the chosen resolution and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current table rather than treating one value as universal. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also advises testing and monitoring the stream.
Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one for the service’s intended time. YouTube’s encoder-stream instructions describe this workflow.
- Enter the event title, description, and planned time. Choose the privacy setting deliberately: public, unlisted, or private. Scheduling provides a watch page in advance and lets viewers use YouTube’s reminder option when available.
- Choose an audience setting and any other event options that apply to the channel. Interface labels can change, so follow the controls currently shown in YouTube Studio.
- In the stream settings, locate the server URL and stream key for the event. You will enter these in the Pi’s encoder software. Keep the Live Control Room available for the preview and event controls.
Tell viewers clearly that the service is a prerecorded recording being presented at a scheduled time. The YouTube event can be delivered as a live stream even though the service itself was recorded earlier.

Check the Pi and software as a complete setup
Raspberry Pi documentation describes FFmpeg/libav support for audio and video encoding, and says libav uses hardware H.264 encoding where present. A Raspberry Pi technical note documents the Pi 4 hardware encoder path as h264_v4l2m2m. These references establish capabilities, not that a particular model, operating-system image, FFmpeg build, or complete service-stream command will work without configuration and testing. See the Raspberry Pi camera software documentation for the documented software and hardware context.

Before the service, verify that your selected software can read the recording’s container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, and audio tracks; pace playback in real time; and send a continuous stream to YouTube. Confirm whether the file should play once or repeat, and how playback should end. Do not assume an example command for a different Pi or older software version is suitable.
Use YouTube’s ingest settings as a compatibility checklist
- Protocol: Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it; YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the stream in transit. Otherwise, choose a supported ingest option that the encoder and event provide.
- Video: H.264 is YouTube’s recommended video codec in the cited encoder guidance. For a straightforward SDR stream, use the settings appropriate to the source and encoder.
- Rate control: Set CBR, as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate and resolution: Select a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the intended resolution and frame rate. Check actual upload speed and leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the connection’s measured maximum.
- Audio: Use an audio format supported by the selected ingest protocol and encoder; YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3 where supported. Listen for intelligibility, clipping, silence, and sync during rehearsal.
YouTube transcodes live input for viewer devices, so prioritize a stable, supported input over choosing the highest possible resolution. The appropriate resolution and bitrate depend on the recording, the Pi’s encoding capability, and the connection you will actually use.

Enter the event destination and key
In the encoder, enter the event’s server URL and stream key exactly as shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube explains that stream keys “tell your encoder where to send your feed and let YouTube accept it” on its Manage live stream settings page. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in public screenshots, shared scripts, source repositories, or unattended plaintext logs. If it is compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRehearse, preview, and go live
- Run the exact recording through the planned setup. Use the same Pi, encoder software, network, video file, and event configuration intended for the service. Check that playback starts, proceeds at the expected pace, and stops or repeats as intended.
- Start the encoder early. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of the event. Wait for the Live Control Room to receive the stream and show its preview.
- Check picture and sound in the preview. Confirm the right service and opening image, readable picture, audible speech and music, expected audio/video sync, and absence of unintended silence or interruptions.
- Check the watch page separately. Open it on another device or browser and confirm that the congregation can access it under the selected privacy setting. If the event is unlisted or private, make sure intended viewers have the correct access or link.
- Select Go live for the scheduled event. Do this only after the preview and event details are correct. Keep an operator available to monitor the feed and stream health throughout the service.
- End the event in YouTube and stop the encoder. Follow the event controls in Live Control Room, then stop the Pi’s encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; consult its current encoder help page for the applicable archive behavior.
Church content, rights, and operating safeguards
- Check permissions. Confirm that the church has the rights or permissions needed for recorded music, readings, images, and other material included in the service. YouTube requires live content to follow its policies; that general rule does not establish a church-specific copyright clearance.
- Keep a human monitor on duty. A file-based stream still needs checks for playback progress, sound, picture, network status, and the YouTube preview. Have a plan for who can intervene if the feed fails.
- Protect access credentials. Limit who can see or change the stream key, and reset it if exposed.
- Keep a fallback plan. Decide in advance how the congregation will be informed if the scheduled stream cannot proceed. Do not rely on an untested unattended setup for a service.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Encoder has not started, destination URL or key is incorrect, or the network cannot reach the ingest service. | Confirm the event’s current server URL and stream key in Live Control Room, check the encoder’s connection status and network access, then reconnect. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Preview appears, but the picture stutters or drops | Upload capacity, unstable network, or a resolution/bitrate the setup cannot sustain. | Check stream health and the actual upload connection. Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate, leave upload headroom, and rehearse a lower supported setting if necessary. |
| Video or audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync | Source-file compatibility, encoder settings, or processing limits. | Inspect the recording’s codecs, frame rate, tracks, and playback in the selected software. Rehearse the exact file and monitor both audio and video in the YouTube preview before the event. |
| The file ends too early, loops unexpectedly, or runs past the intended time | Encoder playback and end-of-file behavior do not match the event plan. | Test whether the configured source plays once, loops, or stops, and confirm the intended behavior before scheduling. Keep an operator present to end the stream correctly. |
| Viewers cannot open the watch page | Event privacy or viewer access. | Check whether the event is public, unlisted, or private, and verify that intended viewers have the needed link or access. |
These checks identify areas to investigate; they do not substitute for testing the specific Pi, software, file, and network combination you plan to use.
