If you have a finished sermon video, upload it to YouTube Studio from the Mac mini, then publish it, share it privately, or schedule it. Use a Premiere when you want a shared start time, advance watch page, and chat. A live encoder is a separate, more technical route for making a prerecorded sermon appear as a live broadcast.

Choose how the congregation should watch

Route Best for What viewers get Technical burden
Regular upload Making the sermon available to watch at any time, or publishing it at a chosen time A normal YouTube video; visibility can be Public, Unlisted, or Private Lowest: upload and set visibility
Premiere Gathering viewers for a common start time A public watch page in advance, reminders, and chat during the Premiere; afterward it remains a regular upload Low: schedule the upload and set it as a Premiere
Live encoder Presenting the prerecorded sermon as a live broadcast with a live event and chat A live stream event Highest: configure an encoder, protect the stream key, test, and monitor the stream

For most churches, a regular upload or Premiere is simpler than sending a prerecorded file through an encoder. The Mac mini is just the computer used to upload the finished video; YouTube handles publication and playback after processing.

Upload and publish the sermon from the Mac mini

  1. Open YouTube Studio on the Mac mini and sign in to the church’s YouTube channel.
  2. Select Create → Upload videos, choose the sermon video file, and enter its title and other video details.
  3. Complete the audience and other required details in Studio. Check that the channel account has permission to upload and publish.
  4. On the Visibility step, choose the outcome you want:
    • Public: viewers can find and watch the sermon after YouTube finishes processing it.
    • Unlisted: people with the link can watch; use this when you want to share the video without making it generally discoverable.
    • Private: access is restricted. This is also the state of a scheduled video before its publication time.
    • Schedule: choose a future date and time for the video to become public.
  5. Review the visibility and details, then save or schedule the upload. Allow time for processing before the congregation expects to watch.

Uploading and publishing are separate: uploading transfers the file to YouTube, while the visibility setting determines when and how people can watch it. YouTube’s computer upload instructions explain the upload flow and visibility options.

Schedule a sermon for a specific service time

Choose Schedule on the Visibility step, then set the date, time, and time zone shown in YouTube Studio. The video remains private until the selected publication time. YouTube describes the feature this way: “You can use scheduled publishing to schedule a private video to go public at a specific time.” See YouTube’s scheduling instructions.

Verify the time zone before saving, especially if church staff and viewers are in different regions. YouTube notes that the “Published on” date displayed on the watch page is based on Pacific Standard Time; for a video scheduled in a time zone ahead of PST, that displayed date can differ from the date shown in Studio.

If a scheduled sermon does not become public, check the channel’s status. A Community Guidelines strike can prevent scheduled publishing during the penalty period; after the restriction ends, reschedule the video if needed.

Set up a Premiere for a shared viewing

A Premiere is a scheduled viewing of an uploaded video, not a live encoder broadcast. During upload, schedule the video and select Set as Premiere. YouTube creates a public watch page ahead of playback, so the church can share one link and invite people to set a reminder or chat. After the event, the sermon remains a regular upload on the channel. The YouTube Premiere guide covers its setup and limitations.

  • Choose a Premiere if the congregation benefits from gathering at a common start time and using chat.
  • Choose ordinary scheduling if viewers should simply watch whenever they are available.
  • Premieres do not support Shorts or output above 1080p. A Community Guidelines strike may also prevent publication during a penalty period.

Use an encoder only for a true live rebroadcast

If the church specifically wants the sermon file to appear as a live broadcast—with a live event watch page and live chat—send it through an encoder rather than using the ordinary upload or Premiere workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the stream URL and stream key workflow.

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live event and open its Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder. Treat the stream key as private: it is what allows the encoder to connect to the channel.
  3. Configure the encoder to play the sermon video file as its outgoing feed and begin the stream according to the event’s schedule.
  4. Before the service, test the setup. Preview the event in Live Control Room, check stream health, and confirm that audio and video are accessible and playing correctly.
  5. During the broadcast, monitor the stream rather than assuming the file is reaching viewers just because playback is running locally.

YouTube’s encoder directory lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge, and Gyre as a cloud service described for continuous prerecorded-video streams. These are options to investigate, not endorsements or confirmation that either is right for a particular church. The live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance recommends testing and monitoring the stream.

Check the sermon file before uploading

Upload a video file, not an audio-only file: YouTube says an audio file alone cannot be uploaded to create a video. If you only have audio, combine it with a still image or other visual to create a video file first.

YouTube’s published upload recommendations include an MP4 container, H.264 video, AAC-LC or Opus audio, and retaining the frame rate used in the original recording. Its recommendation is: “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.” The detailed settings page is scoped to Studio Content Manager partners, so ordinary church uploaders should check compatibility and let YouTube process a suitable file rather than treating every technical parameter as mandatory re-encoding work. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.

Copyright and channel checks before sharing

  • Confirm the church has permission to use every element in the recording, including music, lyrics, photographs, video clips, and any third-party material in slides.
  • Use the correct visibility setting for the intended audience and test the link from a viewer’s perspective before sharing it widely.
  • For scheduled publication or a Premiere, check channel status in advance; a Community Guidelines penalty can prevent publication during its restriction period.
  • For an encoder broadcast, keep the stream key private and verify the event preview, sound, picture, and stream health before the service begins.
