FFmpeg can send a sequence of prerecorded sermons to a YouTube Live event, but it cannot read an ordinary CSV as a playlist directly. First parse the CSV into FFmpeg’s concat-list format, check that the video files are compatible, then send the result to the event’s stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room.

Before you start

This workflow is for a finite, ordered set of existing video files. The CSV’s column names, delimiter, quoting rules, path format, operating system, FFmpeg build, and media formats vary, so treat the examples below as adaptable—not as a ready-to-run script for every church’s files.

  • Install an FFmpeg build that includes the required demuxer and encoders, and confirm it runs with ffmpeg -version.
  • Keep the CSV and sermon files in a stable location accessible to the computer running FFmpeg for the whole event.
  • Check that every CSV entry points to an existing, readable file and that the row order is the intended broadcast order.
  • Confirm the church has the rights and permissions needed to stream each sermon, including any music, readings, or other material in the recording.
  • Check YouTube Live eligibility before scheduling: YouTube’s guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube states that the minimum age to live stream is 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Turn the CSV into an FFmpeg playlist

The concat demuxer expects a text file in FFmpeg concat syntax, not comma-separated rows. Read the CSV with a CSV-aware parser that matches its actual delimiter, headers, and quoting rules. Validate each path before writing it; do not paste arbitrary CSV contents into a shell command or assume a particular column name.

For compatible files, the generated text file could look like this:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'media/sermon-01.mp4'
file 'media/sermon-02.mp4'

The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 and must be the first line for automatic format recognition. Keep paths relative to the working directory where FFmpeg will run, or use carefully validated absolute paths. Paths with quotes or unusual characters need escaping according to FFmpeg’s concat-list syntax; do not assume that CSV quoting rules also escape concat-list entries. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation.

The default safe mode rejects some paths considered unsafe. Keep it enabled where possible. If trusted absolute paths genuinely require -safe 0, constrain and validate the inputs yourself: that setting accepts any filename, so it should never be used to pass through unchecked CSV values. See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer options.

Check whether the sermon files can be concatenated without re-encoding

Before choosing stream copy, probe representative files and compare their streams, codecs, time bases, and durations. The concat demuxer is suited to joining files without re-encoding only when their stream layouts and relevant media parameters are compatible. It uses file durations to place later segments in sequence; inaccurate durations or differing media properties can cause gaps or audiovisual artifacts.

Choose the appropriate concat method

Method When it fits Trade-off
Concat demuxer with stream copy Inputs have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Can avoid re-encoding, but incompatible inputs or duration issues can produce errors or playback artifacts.
Concat filter with re-encoding Inputs differ and need to be brought to consistent output parameters. Requires encoding the result, which uses more processing time; choose and test settings for the actual files.

FFmpeg distinguishes the concat demuxer, which can avoid re-encoding for suitable inputs, from the concat filter, which is appropriate when re-encoding is needed. See FFmpeg’s concat FAQ. Do not assume a single stream-copy command will work for an arbitrary collection of sermon recordings.

Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live event.
  2. Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Use the endpoint supplied for that event; do not assume a sample URL is universal. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  3. Choose RTMPS when available. RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL, and YouTube recommends it. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
  4. Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of public scripts, repositories, screenshots, and shared terminal logs. YouTube describes stream keys as a stream’s password and address in its encoder settings guidance.

Set encoder options for YouTube

Match the output to the source material and YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than choosing a bitrate as if one value applied to every resolution. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, AAC or MP3 audio, and up to 60 fps; its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The same page provides bitrate recommendations by resolution. Check it when configuring the event: YouTube’s live encoder settings.

For a straightforward standard dynamic range sermon feed, H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical example, not a requirement for every source or stream. Set resolution and frame rate to suit the source, and select the corresponding bitrate from YouTube’s current table. YouTube also lists other supported codecs, including HEVC and AV1, subject to format-specific conditions.

Run FFmpeg and verify the live feed

The command pattern is: read the generated concat list as input, choose stream copy or a suitable re-encoding workflow, then output to the event’s RTMPS endpoint with its key. The exact URL form depends on the URL YouTube provides and the installed FFmpeg build. Avoid putting a real key directly in a public command example or saving it in a shared script.

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i sermons.ffconcat
  -c:v copy -c:a copy
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

This illustrates the structure only. -c:v copy -c:a copy is appropriate only if the inputs are compatible and the output is accepted by the event. If files are not compatible, use a tested concat-filter and re-encoding workflow with consistent output parameters instead. Set the endpoint variables securely for your environment, and adapt the output URL to YouTube’s actual event settings.

  1. Start the event in Live Control Room and launch FFmpeg.
  2. Wait for the incoming signal, then inspect the Control Room preview for picture, sound, and the expected sermon order before relying on the public event.
  3. Check that the live page is accessible to its intended audience and monitor stream health and the network connection during the broadcast.
  4. Have an operator available to stop or restart FFmpeg and verify the next scheduled sermon if the process exits or stalls.

YouTube recommends leaving upload capacity beyond the stream’s total bitrate, checking the preview, and monitoring stream quality. Its encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm the current account and event settings rather than assuming archiving for longer streams. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Plan for a finite playlist and unattended operation

The concat demuxer processes the listed files in sequence; it does not automatically repeat the list or read new CSV rows during a broadcast. A continuous repeating schedule requires an explicit wrapper or scheduler that starts another run or supplies the next playlist. Decide how playlist edits, process restarts, and operator oversight will work before the event. The right unattended setup depends on the church’s operating system and staffing; no single scheduler is appropriate for every installation.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • FFmpeg rejects the playlist: Check that the file is concat syntax rather than CSV, that the header is exact and first, and that every listed path exists relative to the process working directory. Check escaping for quotes and unusual characters.
  • A path is rejected as unsafe: Prefer safe relative paths. Only consider -safe 0 for trusted, constrained inputs; do not use it to accept unvalidated CSV paths.
  • The broadcast stops or a sermon is missing: Check the FFmpeg log for a missing or unreadable file, verify the generated order against the CSV, and ensure the media folder remains accessible throughout the run.
  • There are gaps, glitches, or audio/video problems between sermons: Compare codecs, streams, time bases, and durations. The demuxer relies on durations to place subsequent files; inaccurate metadata or incompatible files may require a concat-filter workflow with re-encoding.
  • YouTube does not receive a stream: Confirm the event is active, the endpoint and key match that event, RTMPS is configured as supplied, and the channel is eligible. Treat a stream key mismatch like an incorrect password.
  • The preview is unstable or the stream quality drops: Check available upload capacity against the total stream bitrate, then review resolution-specific encoder settings, CBR, and the keyframe interval against YouTube’s current guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than a finite FFmpeg session, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud: upload the recordings, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
