You can broadcast prerecorded sermons as a YouTube Live stream by looping a video or playlist in an encoder such as OBS, then connecting that encoder to a stream created in YouTube Studio. For a 24/7 channel, choose whether a church computer will run the encoder continuously or a cloud service will handle playback. Plan a separate replay: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
Before you start: confirm the channel can livestream
The church’s YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the day of a service. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility instructions.
- Confirm that the channel is eligible before configuring the encoder.
- Choose who will own and protect the stream key; treat it like a password.
- Decide whether the stream is public, unlisted, or private, and test the intended viewing experience before relying on it.
Choose how the 24/7 stream will run
The encoder must keep sending video and audio to YouTube. A church computer running software such as OBS gives you control over scenes, graphics, playlists, and handoffs, but the computer, network connection, and encoder must remain powered and monitored. YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders; its encoder guidance lists Gyre as a cloud option for continuous prerecorded YouTube broadcasts. Verify a service’s current pricing, storage, controls, outage support, rights handling, and terms before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder overview is at YouTube Help.

Set up a looping sermon in OBS
Loop one sermon file
- Open OBS and add a Media Source to the scene you intend to broadcast.
- In the source properties, select the sermon video file and enable Loop. OBS describes this setting as specifying whether the file plays again once playback has completed. The setting is documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Play the source in OBS and confirm that both picture and sound are correct. Check the beginning and end of the file so a blank frame, silence, or unexpected transition will not repeat indefinitely.
Loop a playlist
- Add a VLC Video source to the OBS scene.
- Build the playlist from the sermon files you want to play, in the intended order.
- Enable Loop Playlist, then preview the sequence and confirm that each file plays with working audio.
Keep the media files accessible for the whole broadcast. If they are stored on a removable drive, ensure it stays connected; for a long-running stream, avoid changing, moving, or renaming the files while OBS is using them.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service, and enter the stream key. If configuring a custom service, enter YouTube’s stream URL as well. Use the details for the stream you created, rather than reusing a key without confirming it is the right one.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview.
- Check the video and audio in the preview. When ready, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if YouTube has not started it automatically for the selected setup.
- Open the watch page on desktop and mobile to verify that viewers can access it and that sound and picture are working.
Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed or sent to the wrong person, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder using the new key.

Plan for continuity, monitoring, and replay
A 24/7 live broadcast does not guarantee a dependable 24-hour replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, do not rely on one uninterrupted stream archive. Keep sermon masters and publish important messages as regular videos. YouTube’s guidance is available at YouTube Help on live-stream archives.
YouTube recommends testing in advance, monitoring stream quality, and recording a local archive as a backup. For a local OBS setup, assign someone to watch the broadcast and confirm that any local recording file is continuing to grow. A cloud stream avoids needing the church’s own computer to stay online, but the church should still check the YouTube watch page and arrange a response if the stream stops.

Check copyright and church-use rights before broadcasting
The church is responsible for having the necessary rights to use all live content on Google services worldwide, including music licensing rights, and for complying with applicable laws. YouTube’s published livestream terms and conditions put that responsibility on the broadcaster.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate it, or apply strikes. If the church has licensed third-party material, the rights owner may still need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; possessing a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Review the YouTube copyright guidance for live streams before going live.

Troubleshooting common failures
YouTube does not show an incoming encoder feed
- Confirm the channel is eligible to livestream and that first-time enablement has completed.
- Check that OBS is using the stream key and stream URL for the stream currently open in YouTube Studio.
- Confirm OBS has started streaming and that the network connection is available. If the key may have been exposed, replace it and update OBS.
The sermon plays once and then stops
For a single file, check that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a sequence, check that the playlist is loaded in the VLC Video source and Loop Playlist is enabled.
There is picture but no sound, or the wrong source is playing
Preview the source in OBS before going live. Confirm the intended media source is in the active scene, the file’s audio is present, and the playlist contains the correct files in the right order. Check the YouTube preview and watch page rather than relying only on the OBS preview.
The live stream is interrupted over music or other third-party content
Review the rights for the flagged material and contact the rights owner about the channel’s Content ID allowlist where applicable. A license by itself may not prevent YouTube from interrupting a live stream.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe stream ended and there is no full replay
A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Keep local sermon masters, record a backup where practical, and publish individual sermons separately when a durable replay is needed.
