To keep a church prayer meeting playlist live on YouTube around the clock, create a YouTube Live broadcast and send it a continuous audio-and-video feed from an encoder. For a do-it-yourself setup, prepare a looping playlist, configure an encoder such as OBS for a YouTube-supported ingest protocol, and keep the computer and internet connection running. Test the full loop and check music rights before sharing the broadcast link.
Before you start: check channel access and music rights
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires the channel to be verified and free of a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to enable live streaming. YouTube also says a live streamer must be at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio before building a 24/7 plan around it: YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
Check rights for the exact music and use
Permission to perform a song during a church service does not necessarily include permission to play a commercial recording on a YouTube stream. Rights may differ for the composition, a particular arrangement, and the sound recording; they may also depend on whether you perform the music live, play a recording, keep an archive, or embed the stream elsewhere.
For example, Church of England guidance says its CCLI Streaming Licence covers live worship music for qualifying churches’ YouTube streams, but does not permit playing commercially available CDs or recordings without specific permission from the copyright holder. It also points to One License for additional catalogs. The Methodist Church’s guidance likewise distinguishes live worship coverage from pre-recorded commercial tracks, which it says are not covered by that permission and generally require explicit rights-holder permission or another applicable licence. These are denomination- and territory-specific explanations, not universal legal advice: check the current terms for your church, location, catalog, and intended use. Set up a continuous YouTube Live broadcast with an encoder
1. Create or schedule the broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create or schedule the broadcast, choose a clear title and description, and state that it carries a continuous prayer or worship playlist.
- Select the stream key and ingest settings for the encoder you plan to use. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it beyond people who need to configure the stream.
- Keep Live Control Room available so you can confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed and see any warnings before you announce the link.

2. Prepare the playlist and on-screen visual
Make a playlist that can repeat without operator intervention. Decide how tracks will transition, set the desired order, and prepare a static or otherwise appropriate visual for viewers. Check the start and end of the playlist for unexpected silence, abrupt cuts, or content you did not intend to include. An encoder is useful for combining a feed with overlays or other production elements; YouTube lists OBS among encoders with HLS output support.

3. Configure the encoder and start the feed
In the encoder, select the YouTube-compatible protocol and enter the stream key and ingest information shown in Live Control Room. Set the playlist or media source to repeat, start the encoder, and verify in Live Control Room that both video and audio arrive as expected. YouTube’s instructions vary with the ingest protocol and encoder, so follow the settings for your chosen combination rather than applying settings from a different protocol. A local setup depends on the computer, encoder, power, and internet connection remaining available. Monitor the feed and test how you will restart the encoder and reconnect to the broadcast before relying on it for continuous service. Neither an encoder nor a backup ingest address by itself guarantees an uninterrupted stream.

Choose RTMP or HLS based on your encoder

For HLS ingest, YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte-range support, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. These requirements are specific to HLS; check YouTube’s current protocol documentation and your encoder’s instructions before configuring them. YouTube’s developer documentation also describes a backup ingestion endpoint, which can support a redundancy design but does not guarantee end-to-end continuity. Understand YouTube’s live copyright checks
YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If it identifies third-party content, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder image and warn the creator to stop streaming that material; if it continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. For licensed third-party content, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Having a licence or other paperwork may therefore not prevent an automated interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Keep the stream running and handle interruptions
- No incoming feed: Check that the encoder is running, the correct stream key and ingest details are in use, and the computer still has power and internet access. Confirm the stream status in Live Control Room.
- Audio or video is missing: Inspect the encoder’s selected media source and audio routing, then confirm that the intended playlist item is playing. Verify the received feed in Live Control Room before leaving the setup unattended.
- YouTube warns about third-party content: Stop the material identified in the warning. Review permissions for the exact recording and use; if the content is licensed, ask the owner about Content ID allowlisting for the channel.
- The stream stops after a local outage or restart: Restore the encoder and check the broadcast status in Live Control Room. Test the restart and reconnection sequence in advance; YouTube’s backup HLS ingest endpoint is not a promise that a complete service will recover automatically.
