To keep a church choir concert playlist live on YouTube around the clock, send YouTube a continuous audio-and-video feed from an encoder or a cloud service that repeats your recordings. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports concert streams, but its ordinary playlist feature is not documented as an unattended 24/7 broadcast loop. You must arrange the repeat behavior, keep the feed running, secure the relevant music rights, and plan to monitor and recover the stream.
What you need for a continuous choir stream
A 24/7 broadcast is an encoder-based livestream: a source sends audio and video to YouTube continuously. The source can be encoder software on a computer or compatible hardware. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as suitable for concerts and production workflows, but YouTube’s documentation does not establish a native way to turn an ordinary YouTube playlist into an automatically repeating, unattended livestream.
That means the system producing the feed must repeat the recordings and remain operational. YouTube Studio controls such as reusable stream settings, stream keys, scheduling, and auto-start or auto-stop can help manage an encoder stream; they do not establish automatic recurrence or guarantee uninterrupted operation. YouTube describes a stream key as the information an encoder uses to send its feed to YouTube. Keep it private. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance and stream settings documentation.
Check channel eligibility and music rights first
Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The same guidance says streamers must be at least 16 years old. YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder methods; an encoder is the relevant route for a continuing concert feed. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and setup page before planning a launch.

Clear the music and recording rights
Before uploading or broadcasting, inventory the material: compositions, arrangements, choir performances, recordings, and any other included content. Confirm that the permissions cover YouTube livestreaming and any archived replay, for the relevant territory and use. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to obtain necessary rights, including music licensing rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. A general church license should not be assumed to cover every work or use. See YouTube’s terms.
Licensing does not ensure a stream will continue without intervention. YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content and may be interrupted or terminated after a match. If you have permission to use third-party material, ask the rights owner whether your channel must be added to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube’s guidance explains the scanning and interruption process at Copyright issues with live streams.
Choose how to produce and repeat the feed
Software encoder on a computer
A computer-based encoder gives an operator a configurable feed to manage and monitor. YouTube names OBS among encoders with HLS output, but YouTube’s pages do not establish a particular computer specification or prove a specific repeat-playlist setup. Before relying on software for unattended operation, check the encoder’s current documentation for YouTube compatibility, repeat behavior, audio stability, and recovery after a restart.

Hardware encoder
A dedicated hardware encoder can suit a higher-production workflow. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events; that is an option, not a requirement for a prepared playlist. Verify YouTube compatibility, input and audio-routing needs, long-running operating support, monitoring, and recovery options before purchasing. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a minimum device specification or endorse a particular model. If comparing equipment, “hardware video streaming encoder” is a useful product-search phrase.
HLS ingestion
HLS is an ingestion protocol option for compatible encoders and use cases, not a way to make a playlist loop by itself. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP and specifies protocol-specific setup requirements. Choose it only if your encoder and production needs support it; compare compatibility, latency tolerance, configuration complexity, codecs, and available upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.
| Approach | What it offers | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder on a computer | A configurable, operator-managed encoder feed; YouTube lists encoder streaming and names OBS among HLS-capable encoders. | Current YouTube compatibility, repeat behavior, audio stability, computer capacity, operator familiarity, and recovery after restart. |
| Hardware encoder | A dedicated option for higher-production workflows; professional-grade hardware is recommended by YouTube for higher production value. | Compatibility, inputs and audio routing, long-running operation, monitoring and recovery, purchase cost, and support. |
| HLS ingestion | A protocol option for compatible encoders and use cases. | Compatibility, latency tolerance, configuration, codecs, and bandwidth. Higher latency than RTMP is noted by YouTube. |
The practical choice depends on setup complexity, reliability and recovery, audio and production needs, rights coverage, and whether the church can supervise the feed. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a best encoder, a required computer configuration, or a music-rights provider.

Set up the livestream and test the complete path
- Prepare the recordings and repeat plan. Organize the concert videos and decide how the chosen encoder or service will repeat them. Verify that the repeat function works as intended; do not assume a YouTube watch-page playlist provides this behavior.
- Configure the stream in YouTube Studio. Use Live Control Room to configure the encoder stream and obtain its stream key. Keep the key private. Reusable settings, scheduling, and encoder auto-start or auto-stop are management controls, not a guarantee that a stream will recur or stay online indefinitely.
- Connect the encoder and start it ahead of launch. YouTube recommends preparing encoders in advance and starting them before a scheduled event. Check the live preview before making the stream public.
- Check the viewer experience and connection. Confirm the watch page is accessible on different devices, check audio and video quality, and test the network’s upload capacity. Leave upload-bandwidth headroom rather than planning to consume all available capacity with the stream.
- Verify local recordings and monitoring. Check that any local archive is intact. For an always-on setup, assign a person or team to watch the stream and a clear recovery plan for a dropped feed, encoder restart, network failure, or rights notice.
- Decide how to handle the archive. Review archive settings and rights coverage. YouTube says Content ID claims may be made after a livestream is complete, so the team should know how it will review and respond to claims.
YouTube’s preparation advice helps reduce avoidable problems; it is not a promise of uninterrupted 24/7 service. Its streaming tips recommend testing, previewing, checking access, and monitoring audio and video. For higher-production-value events, YouTube says, “For higher production value events, we recommend professional-grade hardware encoders.”
Troubleshoot common interruptions
- The stream will not start: Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility, confirm the encoder is connected to the intended stream, and verify the stream key in the encoder. If you replace or reset a key, update the encoder configuration as well.
- The playlist stops or repeats incorrectly: Check the encoder or playback source’s repeat settings and test a full cycle. YouTube’s ordinary playlist is not documented as an automatic 24/7 livestream loop.
- Viewers report buffering or a poor feed: Test upload capacity, reduce competing network use, and confirm the encoder’s current settings are supported by the connection and ingest method. Leave bandwidth headroom.
- Audio or video quality degrades: Monitor the feed at the source and on the YouTube preview or watch page. Check the recording, routing, encoder, and connection rather than assuming the archive or source file is at fault.
- YouTube interrupts or terminates the stream: Review any copyright notice and identify the matched material. If you have the required rights, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; permission alone may not prevent an automated interruption.
- The stream drops after a computer or network restart: Follow the assigned recovery plan, restore the source and encoder, and confirm the feed is back in the YouTube preview. A continuous broadcast needs a human monitoring and recovery arrangement.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a church use a normal YouTube playlist as its 24/7 livestream?
YouTube’s guidance does not document ordinary playlists as unattended, repeating livestreams; the broadcast needs a continuous feed from an encoder or cloud service.
Does owning a music license guarantee a live stream will stay up?
No. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may interrupt them; a rights owner may need to allowlist the channel.
