To stream a 4K 60fps YouTube Live playlist with subtitles permanently visible in the picture, use OBS Studio with a VLC Video source for the playlist and compose a rendered subtitle overlay above the video. Set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, choose a YouTube-supported encoder and matching bitrate, then verify the composite in preview before going live. A selectable caption track is not the same as burned-in subtitles.
Burned-in subtitles versus live captions
Burned-in subtitles are part of the visible video image: viewers cannot switch them off, and they remain in the picture wherever that video is shown. Live captions are delivered as a separate caption track that compatible players may display or hide.
YouTube documents embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions and captions sent through supported software over HTTP POST. In the embedded 608/708 workflow, YouTube currently supports one caption track, even though the standard supports up to four language tracks. Those delivery options do not, by themselves, satisfy a requirement for subtitles permanently visible in the picture. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.

Prepare the playlist and subtitle assets
Check each video
- Confirm the intended audio and subtitle language for every file.
- Check each clip’s resolution and frame rate. A 4K60 output setting does not turn lower-resolution or lower-frame-rate footage into native 4K60 content.
- Make sure the files play correctly before adding them to OBS. The official guidance does not prescribe one required playlist file format or guarantee seamless transitions between clips with different encodings.
Choose how subtitles will appear
For permanently visible text, use subtitles rendered into the source video or add a rendered text or graphic overlay in the OBS scene. The OBS documentation describes subtitle-track controls for VLC Video and explains how scene layers are ordered, but it does not explicitly promise that enabling VLC’s subtitle track rasterizes the subtitles into the outgoing video. If you use that control, inspect the actual output rather than assuming it meets the burned-in requirement.
#1 Best Overall

The official OBS pages do not specify a verified conversion recipe for turning timed subtitle files into an OBS overlay. Prepare a rendered overlay by a method appropriate to your assets, then check its timing, language, placement, contrast, and legibility against the video. Avoid covering important on-screen content.
Build a looping playlist scene in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS Media Sources.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, add the media files in the order you want them to play, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC Video handles multiple playlist items; the regular Media Source is for a single file and has its own Loop control.
- Fit the video to the canvas. Set up the scene so the video fills the intended frame without unintentionally stretching it. Check the composition at the full 4K output size.
- Add the burned-in subtitle overlay. Add the prepared rendered text or graphic source to the scene and position it above the video in the Sources list. OBS’s Sources Guide explains that sources higher in the list appear on top of those below them.
- Check playback and transitions. Preview a section from each playlist item, including transitions. Confirm that the subtitles stay synchronized and readable, the intended audio plays, and the playlist returns to its beginning after the final item.
Set OBS for YouTube 4K60
Video size and frame rate
Set the output to 3840×2160 at 60 fps. YouTube’s encoder settings list up to 60 fps; that is an ingest limit in the guidance, not a guarantee that a particular computer can encode 4K60 reliably. Choose software or hardware encoding based on tested 4K60 capability and support for your selected codec and protocol.
Codec and bitrate
YouTube’s live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. For 2160p at 60 fps, the page lists a 10 Mbps minimum and 40 Mbps maximum for AV1/HEVC, and recommends 35 Mbps for H.264. Keep the figures tied to the codec: the 35 Mbps figure is the H.264 recommendation, not the AV1/HEVC recommendation.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. These are encoder settings, not a promise that your upload connection or hardware can sustain the stream. Run an upload-speed check and test a representative segment with the same resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and motion you intend to use.
Stream key and connection
Create or select the YouTube stream in Live Control Room and enter its stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot. YouTube’s encoder setup guide covers connecting an encoder to a live stream.
Test the full picture before going live
- Start a test or private stream using the intended YouTube setup, then inspect YouTube’s stream preview.
- Check that the outgoing frame is 3840×2160 at 60 fps and that the selected codec and bitrate match the encoder configuration.
- Watch subtitle timing across the playlist, including the start and end of each clip. Confirm that the text is visibly part of the picture, not merely available through a caption toggle.
- Listen for the correct audio, level, and continuity. Check motion as well as static scenes for dropped frames or instability.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health during the test and during the live event. YouTube advises testing before a stream and monitoring stream health; see its live streaming tips.

Plan for the YouTube archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and automatically archives 1440p and 2160p streams. It warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube as the only recording of a longer event. Keep a local archive backup if you need a dependable copy. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

The VLC Video source is missing or will not play
Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Reopen OBS after installation and check that the media files themselves play.
The playlist stops at the last item
Check that you added the files to a VLC Video source and enabled Loop Playlist. A single-file Media Source uses Loop instead; it is not the multi-file playlist control.

Subtitles appear in OBS but viewers cannot see them
Inspect the actual stream preview. Confirm the subtitle source is visible and layered above the video, and that the text is within the frame and legible. Do not assume the VLC subtitle-track control burns subtitles into the video; use a rendered overlay or video with subtitles already rendered into it when permanent visibility is essential.
The stream buffers, drops frames, or fails to hold 4K60
Check YouTube’s stream health, the encoder’s dropped-frame or overload indicators, and the upload connection. Test at the intended bitrate and codec. If the system or network cannot sustain the chosen settings, resolve that constraint before going live rather than treating YouTube’s published bitrate guidance as a capacity guarantee.
The archive is missing or incomplete
Check the stream duration. YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a long playlist, make a local recording or another archive backup rather than depending solely on automatic archiving.
