YouTube’s 4K/2160p at 60 fps target is clear; a direct VLC playlist-to-YouTube RTMP/RTMPS workflow is not verified by the official documentation cited here. VLC documents playlist sequencing and stream-output pipelines, but its playlist example uses HTTP and does not establish that VLC can deliver YouTube’s required 4K60 ingest settings. Treat direct VLC output as something to validate on your own installation—not as a proven command recipe.
For a reliable attempt, check YouTube’s encoder requirements, test the complete playlist in an unlisted stream, and confirm that Live Control Room detects 2160p60 and healthy ingest before relying on it.
What you need to know before starting
- YouTube accepts live encoder input over RTMP or RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube’s encoder settings are the target for your sending encoder; they do not prove that VLC can meet them in a particular setup.
- VLC’s documentation explains how a broadcast can proceed through successive inputs and how stream-output pipelines can process and send media. The documented playlist example is an HTTP audio example, not a verified YouTube video workflow. VLC’s VLM documentation and stream-output overview do not demonstrate the complete 4K60 RTMP/RTMPS path.
- Use a representative test stream. The source files, VLC build, output pipeline, encoder capacity, network, and YouTube ingest all affect whether the actual stream reaches 2160p60.
Set the YouTube 4K60 encoder target
Use the settings below in the encoder that sends the stream to YouTube. Bitrates are YouTube recommendations for incoming encoder video, not guarantees about your file quality, upload connection, or received resolution.
| Setting | YouTube guidance for 2160p at 60 fps |
|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 |
| Recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265: 35 Mbps; H.264: 50 Mbps |
| Minimum bitrate | AV1 or H.265: 10 Mbps; H.264: 14 Mbps |
| Bitrate mode | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Frame rate | Up to 60 fps |
| Ingest protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS |
| Latency | Normal latency for 4K; YouTube’s low-latency and ultra-low-latency modes do not support 4K |
Before choosing a bitrate, test your sustained upload capacity and leave room for network variation and other traffic. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health. YouTube also transcodes a live stream for viewers, but that does not establish that the incoming feed is 4K60; check the detected resolution and frame rate in Live Control Room. See encoder requirements and YouTube’s latency guidance.

Prepare YouTube Live and your playlist
Enable live streaming and protect the key
- Enable YouTube Live before the planned test. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Keep the stream key private; anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Do not start a public broadcast until you have tested the entire output path and confirmed the stream’s detected settings.
Check every file and transition
- Inspect the actual playlist files in VLC: resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, duration, and whether audio remains continuous at file boundaries.
- Note any mixed formats. They may require a transcoding stage, and VLC documents transcoding and stream-output as pipeline components rather than publishing a proven 4K60 YouTube configuration.
- Make sure each item plays through its end and that the next item begins as expected. A playlist that works locally does not by itself prove uninterrupted network streaming.
VLC’s VLM example assigns successive inputs to a broadcast channel and uses sout-keep so the stream does not break when one item ends. That demonstrates playlist sequencing mechanics only; the example is HTTP transport for audio, not evidence that the same setup works with YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
Test the VLC-to-YouTube path safely
- Build the output workflow using the exact VLC version and encoder path you intend to use. Do not assume a VLC HTTP playlist example can be substituted for YouTube ingest.
- Set the sending encoder to a YouTube-supported codec, CBR, the appropriate 2160p60 bitrate, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Use RTMPS if the output path supports it.
- Run a private or unlisted test of the whole multi-item sequence, including transitions and audio. Use representative motion and sound rather than a static opening frame.
- In Live Control Room, verify that YouTube detects 2160p at 60 fps and review stream health. Confirm that the test continues across file changes instead of checking only the first clip.
- If the installed VLC workflow cannot be shown to publish correctly, use an encoder or bridging application whose playlist input and YouTube ingest support are independently documented, then repeat the same validation. The documentation cited here does not establish a particular bridge as compatible with VLC.
There is no verified direct VLC command in the official documentation cited here that covers a multi-item 4K60 playlist, YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output, and all required encoder controls. Validate the exact installation and configuration before treating it as a dependable workflow.

Understand copyright and YouTube policy before going live
A technically successful stream can still be restricted or removed if you do not have the rights to the video or music. Use content you created or are authorized to broadcast, and check the relevant rights for every playlist item. YouTube’s detection and policy decisions are separate from whether VLC can send the stream; do not treat a successful test as proof that a public broadcast is cleared for use.

| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Confirm that live streaming is enabled, the stream key is current and entered correctly, and the output path actually supports YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingest. VLC’s documented HTTP playlist example does not establish RTMP/RTMPS compatibility. |
| Live Control Room reports a lower resolution or frame rate | Check the source files and the encoder’s actual output, then confirm the detected ingest status. YouTube’s transcoding for viewers does not guarantee a 2160p60 incoming feed. |
| Stream health degrades or drops | Compare sustained upload capacity with the selected bitrate, account for other network traffic and variation, and test again. YouTube’s recommended bitrate is not evidence that your connection can sustain it. |
| The playlist stops or breaks between items | Check that VLC is advancing through the inputs and that the chosen output pipeline maintains the stream across transitions. The documented sout-keep example illustrates this behavior in its HTTP example, not a verified YouTube setup. |
| Audio cuts out or changes between files | Listen to the complete test sequence, especially file boundaries. Inspect mixed source formats and any transcoding needed in your pipeline. |
| 4K latency options are unavailable | Use normal latency: YouTube says its low-latency and ultra-low-latency modes do not support 4K. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a VLC computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
