To stream a playlist at 4K 60fps with Streamlabs Desktop, connect the app to an eligible YouTube channel, add your media to a scene, set the video output to 3840×2160 at 60fps, and configure the encoder to YouTube’s current ingest recommendations. For 2160p60, YouTube recommends H.264 at 35 Mbps; it lists 10–40 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Test the stream and confirm its health in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.

Before you start

  • YouTube eligibility: Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check your status and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio before your scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
  • Playlist rights: Confirm you have the necessary rights to stream every video and audio track. Public availability or a purchase does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast.
  • Suitable source and hardware: Use source video that is genuinely 4K and 60fps if you want to preserve those qualities. Your computer’s encoder must also be able to handle 3840×2160 at 60fps.
  • Stable upload connection: A high bitrate needs sustained upload capacity, with room for other network traffic. YouTube recommends 20% headroom; the bandwidth section below shows how to apply that to the 4K60 target.

Set up YouTube Live and Streamlabs Desktop

  1. Create or schedule the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream using an encoder workflow. Open its stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key into Streamlabs Desktop’s streaming configuration. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. Add the playlist media to a scene. In Streamlabs Desktop, add the video or media source to the scene you intend to broadcast. Streamlabs documents media files such as MP4 and media-source looping and caching behavior in its pre-recorded video streaming guide. Check the controls available in your current app version and test that playback restarts at the expected point. The exact current playlist-specific menu labels are not established here, so do not assume a particular control name.
  3. Set the video output. Open Settings > Video. Set the base canvas and output resolution to 3840×2160, then set FPS to 60. Streamlabs documents these controls in its video settings guide. If your source, encoder, or machine cannot sustain this output, choose a lower resolution or frame rate rather than accepting a stream that repeatedly drops frames.
  4. Configure the encoder. In Streamlabs Desktop’s output settings, select a hardware or software encoder that supports a stable 4K60 stream on your computer. Set rate control to CBR, set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and use RTMPS where available. For a 2160p60 H.264 stream, set video bitrate to YouTube’s recommended 35 Mbps. For AV1 or H.265, YouTube lists a range of 10–40 Mbps at 2160p60; choose a value supported by your encoder and sustainable on your connection. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the applicable codec details. Streamlabs has also published an older 4K60 bitrate range of 20,000–51,000 Kbps; because that differs from YouTube’s current table, use YouTube’s current guidance for ingest settings.
  5. Check audio and playback. Confirm that the scene captures the intended audio, that levels are usable, and that the video progresses through the playlist as expected. Run a test long enough to catch a playback restart or transition if your stream depends on one.
  6. Start early and verify the public ingest. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages; a correct-looking local preview does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover advance setup and monitoring.

Choose between H.264 and AV1 or H.265

Codec YouTube’s 2160p60 bitrate guidance When to choose it
H.264 35 Mbps recommended Use it when the computer’s encoder supports it reliably and you can sustain the recommended bitrate.
AV1 or H.265 10–40 Mbps listed range Use one only if your selected encoder supports it reliably. The lower end of the listed range is not a guarantee of equivalent quality for every source or scene.

The current YouTube guidance also specifies CBR, recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. It accepts RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported codecs. Choose based on reliable support in your encoder as well as YouTube’s recommendations—not on bitrate alone.

Plan upload bandwidth for 4K60

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for other traffic. Applying that guidance to the recommended 35 Mbps H.264 video bitrate gives 42 Mbps of available upload capacity: 35 × 1.2. This is arithmetic based on YouTube’s recommendation, not a guaranteed speed-test threshold; audio and simultaneous network use also consume capacity. Test the actual connection under representative conditions, and avoid saturating it with other uploads during the broadcast. See YouTube’s network and streaming tips.

If the connection cannot sustain the target, reduce the output bitrate, resolution, or frame rate before the event, or improve the connection. A stable lower-resolution broadcast is usually preferable to a 4K60 stream that stutters or disconnects. Ethernet is an optional way to reduce reliance on Wi-Fi; YouTube’s guidance emphasizes reliable bandwidth but does not make a particular cable or connection type mandatory.

Understand what viewers receive

Your encoder sends YouTube a 2160p60 source feed when configured and operating correctly. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple formats, so an individual viewer’s available rendition can vary with device, bandwidth, and YouTube processing. YouTube’s encoder guidance places 4K streams at normal latency rather than low latency. A 4K60 input therefore does not guarantee that every viewer will see 4K60 or receive it with low latency.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
YouTube does not accept the stream Live streaming is not enabled, the channel is ineligible, or the URL/key is incorrect. Check channel verification and restrictions in YouTube Studio, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, and confirm the stream URL and key. Replace a key if it may have been exposed.
Video stutters, drops frames, or stream health worsens Encoder load or upload capacity is insufficient for the configured output. Check encoder load and YouTube’s health messages. Reduce output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, close competing upload-heavy apps, or improve the connection. Re-test before going live.
Stream disconnects or fluctuates Upload connection is unstable or lacks headroom. Check available upload capacity under realistic conditions, account for other network traffic, and use the 20% headroom guidance. If necessary, lower the stream profile.
Video does not restart or playlist progression is wrong The media source’s loop or playlist behavior is not configured as intended. Inspect the media source controls in your current Streamlabs version and test the complete sequence, including the end of a clip. Do not rely on an assumed menu label; confirm the result in playback.
Viewers report lower resolution than 4K YouTube offers transcoded renditions and viewer playback depends on device, bandwidth, and processing. Confirm the Live Control Room is receiving the intended 2160p60 stream. Viewer playback quality is not fully controlled by the encoder.
Audio is missing or does not match the video The scene may not be capturing the intended source, or source playback and audio have not been tested together. Check the scene’s audio meters and perform a representative test with the complete playlist before the event.
