You can use FFmpeg to send a bhajan video playlist to YouTube Live at a 4K/2160p, 60 fps ingest target, provided your source files, FFmpeg build, encoder and upload connection can sustain it. For SDR H.264, YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 50 Mbps video bitrate and lists 14 Mbps as the minimum. Prepare and test the playlist before going live: no generic FFmpeg example guarantees compatible files, seamless looping or real-time 4K encoding.
Before you start: check the files, encoder and connection
A 4K/60 label on the output does not make a source video 4K or 60 fps. Inspect every playlist file for resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, video and audio codecs, audio presence, and compatible stream parameters. If footage is lower resolution, upscaling can meet an output dimension but cannot restore detail that is not in the source. Changing frame rate also does not guarantee natural motion.
Confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports the codec and encoder you plan to use, and that the computer can encode the chosen output continuously in real time. The target bitrate is demanding; a setting alone cannot establish that the hardware will sustain it.
- Have a YouTube channel eligible to create a live stream and access to its Live Control Room.
- Install FFmpeg and check its version and available encoders locally.
- Keep your YouTube stream key private. Substitute it only in your local command or private configuration; do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in shared shell history.
- Measure outbound upload capacity and stability on the connection the streaming computer will actually use. Download speed is not the relevant limit.
Choose YouTube’s ingest settings
YouTube’s English encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, supports up to 60 fps and lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 among encoder options. Choose a codec supported both by your FFmpeg build and the YouTube ingest path available to your stream. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended protocol.

| Target and codec | YouTube bitrate guidance for 4K/2160p at 60 fps | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 50 Mbps recommended; 14 Mbps minimum | A familiar SDR target, but confirm your encoder can hold the bitrate and frame rate. |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps recommended; 10 Mbps minimum | Use only if your local FFmpeg encoder and YouTube ingest path support the selected codec. |
These are YouTube’s technical encoder recommendations and minimums, not a promise of stream quality or audience performance. Do not treat 50 Mbps as a universal minimum: YouTube lists it as the H.264 recommendation, alongside a 14 Mbps minimum. The stated values are video bitrate figures; include audio when calculating the total outbound bitrate.
SDR settings
For a standard SDR stream, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its listed audio options are AAC or MP3. Advanced guidance specifies stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

HDR is a separate workflow
Do not apply SDR color instructions to HDR. YouTube lists separate HDR requirements, including a supported HDR codec and 10-bit depth; its general encoder page lists H.265 for HDR. If your source is HDR and you intend to preserve HDR, confirm the current YouTube HDR guidance and your entire encoding path before configuring the stream. Otherwise, plan and test an SDR output explicitly.
Prepare the playlist and pace file input
FFmpeg documents a concat demuxer for reading a sequence of files and the -re option for reading an input at its native rate. These are useful building blocks, not a universal recipe for every playlist. The files must be compatible for the chosen concatenation and output method; mismatched codecs, stream layouts, time bases, timestamps, frame rates or audio can cause failures or awkward transitions.

- Inspect representative files. Check the first, middle and last videos, including audio and motion. Record their video and audio stream properties before deciding whether stream copy is possible.
- Build a playlist using FFmpeg’s concat method. Follow the installed FFmpeg documentation for the concat demuxer and your file list. Confirm that the files’ streams and parameters are compatible with the method you choose.
- Decide whether to copy or encode. Stream copy is appropriate only when the playlist streams and parameters are compatible with the target. If they are not, re-encoding may be needed to produce a consistent stream; test whether the selected software or hardware encoder can sustain the target in real time.
- Pace playback in real time. Use the documented
-reinput option where appropriate for file input. Verify behavior with your installed FFmpeg version and full command structure rather than assuming it makes every playlist loop correctly. - Test the intended repeat behavior. The official documentation referenced here does not establish one universal command for endlessly looping a mixed playlist. Verify how your particular playlist handles the end, restart, timestamps and transitions before scheduling a broadcast.
No command is shown here as a validated, ready-to-run playlist loop. FFmpeg behavior depends on version, source files and command structure, so use the installed documentation and test your exact workflow instead of copying an unverified command into a live event.
Set bandwidth and test the stream
YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. Add video and audio bitrate, then make sure measured upload capacity has that margin available throughout the broadcast. A nominal speed-test result is not a guarantee of sustained capacity, especially on a shared or unstable connection.

- Configure the chosen codec, CBR, keyframe interval, audio and SDR or HDR color settings to match the current YouTube guidance for that workflow.
- Use RTMPS where available and enter your private stream key only in the local encoder configuration.
- Run a test with representative motion and audio before the event. Verify that the encoder stays in real time rather than falling behind.
- Open the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Confirm the received resolution and frame rate and check stream-health messages, dropped frames, audio levels and synchronization.
- Set up well in advance. Start the encoder before the scheduled event, check the preview, and keep monitoring audio and video quality while live.
YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and streaming tips are the primary references for current ingest and preparation guidance. YouTube advises: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available. Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive a stream: Check that the selected ingest URL and protocol match your YouTube setup, the stream key is correct and private, the network allows the connection, and the encoder is actually sending data.
- The stream drops frames or falls behind: The encoder may not sustain the selected resolution, frame rate and bitrate, or upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable. Check encoder performance and measured outbound bandwidth; reduce the target or use an encoder and connection that can sustain it.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare total bitrate with available upload capacity, restore the recommended headroom, and check for network contention or instability. Review the Live Control Room health indicators.
- Audio is missing or out of sync: Confirm each file has the expected audio stream, inspect transitions between files, and verify the selected audio codec, sample rate and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance. Test the complete playlist, not just one clip.
- Playlist concatenation fails or transitions are problematic: Check stream compatibility and parameters across files, then consult the concat demuxer documentation for the installed FFmpeg version. Re-encoding to a consistent output may be necessary; do not assume concatenation makes transitions seamless.
- The playlist stops instead of repeating: Looping behavior depends on the command structure, FFmpeg version and playlist. Verify the end-of-list behavior in a private test before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
- The output is not actually 4K/60: Inspect the incoming stream in YouTube’s preview and confirm the source properties and encoder output. An output setting cannot add genuine source detail or guarantee that a machine can encode 60 fps.
Copyright and YouTube Live checks for bhajan content
Devotional subject matter does not by itself establish permission to stream a recording. Before broadcasting, confirm you have the necessary rights for the specific audio and video, including the recording and any underlying composition or performance. A recording you can listen to or upload is not automatically cleared for a public live broadcast. Review applicable YouTube copyright and live-stream rules, and do not assume that a test or playlist format exempts the content from them.
