You can keep a YouTube radio-style playlist live from a DigitalOcean Droplet by looping audio and video in an encoder on the server, then sending that feed to a YouTube live stream over RTMPS. YouTube treats the incoming stream and the viewer-facing broadcast as separate resources, so you must connect the feed to a broadcast as well as keep the encoder running. This is a workflow, not a tested Droplet-size recipe or an uptime guarantee.

How the 24/7 setup works

A live stream is the continuous audio/video feed your encoder sends to YouTube. A live broadcast is the event viewers watch. YouTube documents 24/7 feeds and broadcasts that use an already-running stream, so plan for both resources rather than treating a stream key as the entire setup. See YouTube’s guide to broadcasts and streams.

  1. Prepare the playlist. Choose audio and visuals you have permission to use continuously. Make a playlist or a single file that can loop without unintended silence or abrupt transitions.
  2. Provision and secure a Droplet. Install an encoder and configure it to read and loop the playlist. The Droplet must be able to encode the chosen format continuously and sustain the outbound bitrate; the available sources do not establish a universally sufficient plan size.
  3. Create or select YouTube live resources. Obtain the stream’s ingestion address and stream name/key, then connect that stream to the viewer-facing broadcast.
  4. Test and monitor. Send a representative feed, confirm YouTube reports healthy input and the broadcast displays correctly, then monitor both server and YouTube status while it runs.

Do not treat this as a guaranteed-uptime configuration: server failures, network interruptions, encoder exits, YouTube ingest issues, and account or content restrictions can interrupt a feed.

Prepare YouTube ingestion and the broadcast

Use the stream’s own ingestion details

YouTube’s LiveStreams resource reference describes the ingestion type, primary and backup addresses, stream name, resolution, frame rate, and health status. Use the values supplied for your stream; do not guess an endpoint or reuse a key without confirming it is the intended destination. Treat the stream key/name as a secret because it identifies where an encoder sends its feed. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it through YouTube’s available controls.

Prefer RTMPS for the outbound connection

RTMPS is RTMP over SSL. YouTube documents a valid RTMPS endpoint and port 443 for this connection and recommends RTMPS as a secure option for low-latency streaming. Configure the encoder to use the exact RTMPS address and stream name YouTube provides; see the RTMPS ingestion guide.

Connect the stream to a live broadcast

In YouTube’s live control workflow, create or select the broadcast and associate it with the incoming stream. A healthy incoming stream does not by itself prove that the intended viewer-facing event is live. Confirm the broadcast status and its preview before relying on it as the public destination. YouTube’s broadcast and stream guide explains the distinction and the 24/7-feed use case.

Configure encoding for YouTube

YouTube transcodes live input for viewer devices. The source encoder still needs to produce a supported feed and a stable connection. The settings below reflect YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations reviewed on 2026-10-03; they are platform guidance, not results of a Droplet test. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before deployment.

Setting Practical target Notes
Protocol RTMPS Use the supplied endpoint and stream name; YouTube documents port 443.
Video codec H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 where supported by the selected format YouTube’s guidance includes format-specific constraints; verify compatibility for your encoder and output.
Rate control Constant bitrate (CBR) Use a bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate.
Keyframes 2-second interval recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds This is YouTube’s current guidance.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps Choose a rate that matches the visual content and the encoder’s sustained capability.
Stereo audio AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps recommended for stereo The 128 kbps recommendation is for stereo audio.
5.1 audio AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps Use only if the program and playback chain are actually 5.1.

Choose video settings for a radio visual

A static cover image or simple visualizer may not need the same video profile as high-motion footage, but do not label a lower bitrate as YouTube’s recommendation unless its current table says so. For examples, YouTube’s current H.264 table lists 720p at 30 or 60 fps at a recommended 8 Mbps, and 1080p at 30 fps at 14 Mbps. Select resolution and bitrate from the current table, then test the actual image, audio, and motion you will broadcast.

Loop the playlist without masking failures

Configure the encoder’s media input to repeat the intended program indefinitely. Before going public, check the loop boundary, audio levels, image aspect ratio, and what viewers see during a missing or unreadable media file. A loop can keep program material repeating, but it does not restart a crashed encoder or restore a broken connection; those require separate process supervision and monitoring.

Provision and secure the DigitalOcean Droplet

DigitalOcean’s recommended production Droplet setup calls for measures including SSH-key access, a non-root user with sudo, monitoring, appropriate backups, and a cloud firewall. For this outbound encoder architecture, start with a restrictive inbound baseline that allows SSH as needed and permits outbound connections. Do not open inbound streaming ports unless your chosen design actually requires incoming connections.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
  • Test sustained encoding, not just startup. The right Droplet depends on the encoder, codecs, resolution, frame rate, and whether encoding is CPU-intensive. The available platform guidance does not name a universally adequate Droplet size.
  • Keep the stream key out of public logs and shared scripts. Limit access to configuration and credentials; avoid pasting the key into public support posts.
  • Plan for process and host monitoring. Watch encoder status, CPU and memory pressure, disk space, network errors, and YouTube stream health. A running Droplet alone does not confirm a healthy public broadcast.
  • Decide how you will recover. A process supervisor or equivalent restart policy can help recover from an encoder exit, but it cannot by itself fix invalid credentials, a blocked route, a full disk, or a YouTube-side interruption.

Estimate outbound transfer and monthly cost

A continuous stream sends data out for the entire time it runs. A useful first-order estimate is:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Approximate outbound GiB per 30-day month = bitrate in bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 ÷ 1,073,741,824.

This estimate covers the encoded stream payload approximately; protocol overhead and other Droplet traffic can add to usage. For example, at 8 Mbps, the calculation is about 2,414 GiB over 30 days. Use the actual configured bitrate rather than the upload file size, and include other outbound traffic from the team’s Droplets.

DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation says Droplet transfer allowances are pooled across the team, inbound transfer is free, and additional outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB under the pricing page last verified 2026-08-25. The included amount depends on the selected current plan and the team’s other Droplets; there is no single allowance to apply to every setup. DigitalOcean says its usage and projection dashboard updates daily. Check the current Droplet pricing and transfer details before choosing a plan or estimating a bill.

Check music rights and YouTube policy before going live

Verify that you have rights for each recording and composition in the playlist and that those rights cover the specific use: a continuous livestream on YouTube, in the territories you intend to reach, with any planned monetization. Do not assume that a general music subscription or permission to listen includes livestream or rebroadcast rights. Confirm the catalog’s license terms and how it handles YouTube Content ID claims for this use. This is a rights check, not a legal conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also review YouTube’s current rules for copyright, live content, and monetization. A technically healthy feed does not establish that the channel or playlist qualifies for monetization, and repeating content does not remove rights or policy obligations. Resolve any restrictions or claims shown in YouTube Studio before making the feed public.

Test, launch, and monitor the feed

  1. Run a private or unlisted test. Use representative playlist material and the intended output profile. Check audio continuity, visuals, resolution, keyframe interval, and stream-health indicators.
  2. Verify both resources. Confirm the incoming stream is healthy and connected to the correct broadcast, then inspect the viewer-facing playback.
  3. Check the full loop. Let the playlist pass through its repeat point and confirm it returns cleanly without silence, a blank frame, or an encoder exit.
  4. Go public only after rights and metadata are ready. Confirm the title, description, visibility, and intended audience settings in YouTube’s broadcast controls.
  5. Monitor after launch. Check YouTube stream health and the Droplet’s encoder, resource, disk, and transfer indicators. Establish a routine for alerts and recovery rather than assuming 24/7 means unattended forever.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

Symptom Likely cause What to check or fix
YouTube receives no feed Wrong ingestion address or stream name, encoder not running, or outbound connection failure Compare the encoder destination with the exact YouTube-provided values; confirm the process is active and outbound RTMPS on port 443 is permitted.
Feed connects but YouTube reports poor health Bitrate instability, unsupported settings, overload, or network loss Check encoder logs and Droplet load; confirm codec, CBR, resolution, frame rate, and keyframes against YouTube’s current settings.
Broadcast is not visible to viewers Stream is not associated with the intended broadcast, or broadcast visibility/status is wrong Verify the stream-to-broadcast association and inspect the broadcast status and visibility in YouTube’s live controls.
Encoder stops or playlist ends Looping is not enabled, media input failed, process exited, or disk became unavailable Check the loop configuration, file path and permissions, available disk space, and encoder exit logs; add process monitoring and restart handling.
Audio or image cuts out at the repeat point Source files or playlist transitions contain a gap or incompatible format Test the boundary with the actual playlist; normalize formats or edit transitions where you have permission.
Unexpected bandwidth charge Monthly outbound use exceeded pooled transfer allowance Compare measured usage with the team’s allowance and bitrate-based estimate; review other Droplets and the daily usage projection.
Copyright claim or restriction appears Rights do not cover the use, or Content ID matched the material Review the claim and license terms for the exact recording, continuous livestream use, territory, and monetization; replace material if you cannot verify permission.

Or let it run in the cloud
