Run FFmpeg on your VPS, give it separate video and audio playlist inputs, map one video stream and one audio stream into a single output, then send that output to YouTube over RTMPS. Before leaving it unattended, verify that the files are compatible, the playlists loop as intended, and the process can recover from interruptions.
How the setup works
YouTube receives one outgoing stream containing both video and audio. FFmpeg can read the playlists as separate inputs and combine their selected streams for output. For a basic VPS-to-YouTube setup, RTMPS is the straightforward ingest route: it carries RTMP over TLS/SSL, and YouTube documents its RTMPS connection on port 443. YouTube Help explains RTMPS; Google also documents RTMPS ingestion.
This is not automatically a synchronized music-video schedule. If audio and video playlists have different total durations, each will reach its next cycle at a different time unless you build a paired schedule. Choose the behavior deliberately before starting a continuous stream.
1. Prepare and inspect your media
Inventory the video and audio files and check their containers, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, sample rates, and durations. Compatibility depends on the actual files; there is no single safe assumption for every playlist.

- If the files in each playlist have compatible parameters, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer may join them without re-encoding.
- If they differ in ways that prevent clean concatenation or a consistent output, normalize them with an FFmpeg filter/encoding workflow first. Re-encoding adds processing work, so it can change VPS resource needs.
- Test transitions and file boundaries. Confirm that the audio and video continue as expected when one item ends and the next begins.
FFmpeg documents the distinction between concat-demuxer concatenation and filter-based concatenation in its concat FAQ. Its broader documentation covers options for inspecting and processing media.
2. Create the two playlists
For compatible files, create a text file for each playlist using FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer format. Each file lists its media inputs in playback order, with one file entry per item. Use paths the VPS process can access, and check that file permissions allow FFmpeg to read every item.
Keep video and audio lists separate if you want them to advance independently. If specific audio tracks must accompany specific video clips, define a paired schedule instead: independent loops do not preserve those pairings when the total playlist durations differ.

3. Map video and audio into one output
Pass the video playlist and audio playlist to FFmpeg as distinct inputs, then explicitly map the selected video stream from the first input and audio stream from the second. The outline below is schematic, not a universal drop-in command: adapt input options, mapping, codecs, and output settings to your installed FFmpeg build and media.

-f flv "[RTMPS ingest URL]/[stream key]"The map expressions select the first video stream from the video input and the first audio stream from the audio input. Choose stream-copy options only when the source streams and target output are suitable; otherwise, specify an encoding workflow that produces a compatible output. The RTMP protocol documentation describes FFmpeg’s RTMP variants, including RTMPS, and sending output with the FLV muxer: FFmpeg RTMP protocols.
FFmpeg option placement can matter, and the command must match the installed version and source media. Run it interactively first and inspect its output for errors rather than assuming the schematic command will work unchanged.

4. Get the current YouTube RTMPS details
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and retrieve the active stream’s ingest URL and stream key, following the current account-specific setup shown there. YouTube’s API also exposes RTMPS ingestion-address fields in its LiveStreams documentation.
- Use the RTMPS address YouTube provides; do not rely on a static example copied from an old guide. YouTube documents the
rtmpsscheme and port 443 for RTMPS ingestion. - Insert the address and key into your runtime configuration without publishing them in scripts, logs, screenshots, or support posts. A stream key is a credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send to your stream.
Check the current Live Control Room for account-specific eligibility and stream status. The ingest details and account conditions can vary, so a command alone cannot establish that a particular channel is ready to go live.

5. Test before leaving it unattended
- Confirm YouTube’s preview receives both picture and sound.
- Watch multiple transitions, including the boundary where each playlist reaches its next item or cycle.
- Check whether the process keeps running at file boundaries and whether the resulting schedule matches your intent.
- Stop and restart the process during a test to understand how it obtains credentials and where playback resumes.
- Monitor CPU, memory, network, and disk use under the intended output conditions. VPS sizing cannot be prescribed universally: transcoding, resolution, bitrate, storage, and provider limits all affect requirements.
6. Plan for interruptions and recovery
A 24/7 process needs supervision, monitoring, and a restart plan. Decide how a service manager or other process supervisor will start FFmpeg again, where credentials are stored, and whether recovery should restart the playlist from the beginning or follow a defined resume strategy.
FFmpeg documents an RTMP FIFO muxer example configured to attempt recovery after temporary failures in its formats documentation. Treat this as a recovery option, not a promise of uninterrupted delivery: neither FFmpeg’s example nor YouTube’s ingest documentation guarantees continuous availability.

RTMPS or HLS?

Troubleshooting
- FFmpeg cannot open an input: Check the playlist paths, VPS working directory, file permissions, and whether each listed file exists.
- Concat reports mismatched parameters or playback glitches at cuts: Inspect the affected files. Use the concat demuxer only where input compatibility allows; otherwise normalize or concatenate through a filter/encoding workflow.
- YouTube receives video but no audio, or audio but no video: Check that both inputs are present and that the map expressions select the intended streams. Confirm the preview after changing the command.
- The audio and video drift into different items: Independent playlists are cycling on their own durations. Build a paired schedule if tracks and clips must stay matched.
- YouTube does not connect: Retrieve the current ingest address and key from Live Control Room, verify the key, and check that the VPS can reach the RTMPS endpoint on port 443.
- The stream stops after a temporary network or ingest failure: Review FFmpeg’s error output and configure supervision and recovery. A recovery attempt does not guarantee that YouTube remains available or that playback resumes at the desired item.
- The VPS struggles during output: Determine whether FFmpeg is encoding or copying streams and review resource use at the selected resolution and bitrate. No universal VPS size follows from the playlist alone.
