You can use an M3U-style list to tell FFmpeg which local video files to play in sequence, then send the resulting live encoder feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. The list does not create a livestream by itself: FFmpeg must stay running on a computer or server with access to the files and a stable internet connection.
One important distinction: an input .m3u file is a list of media sources; an .m3u8 produced by FFmpeg’s HLS muxer is an output manifest for segmented HLS media. They serve different purposes. The workflow below uses the local list as input and YouTube’s ordinary encoder ingest path, following the protocol shown for your stream key.
Before you start: what the playlist and stream require
Have FFmpeg installed on the computer or server that will run the stream, all playlist media available at stable paths, and a YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. You also need upload capacity for the selected video and audio bitrate, plus the rights to broadcast every item in the playlist.
- FFmpeg command-line documentation: FFmpeg CLI documentation.
- YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and meet the stated minimum age of 16: YouTube getting started. Check your channel’s status in YouTube Studio.
- Use only content you are authorized to broadcast, including applicable music rights. YouTube’s terms require the rights needed for live content worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights: YouTube livestream terms.
A 24/7 goal is not an uptime guarantee. FFmpeg, the host, the network, source files, or YouTube restrictions can interrupt a long-running stream. Test the intended files and settings before relying on the setup continuously.

Choose how FFmpeg will join the files
The key compatibility question is whether every file has matching streams. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible files without re-encoding. If codecs, stream layouts, or time bases differ, it may fail or produce unreliable output; normalize the media first or use the concat filter and re-encode to a consistent output. The filter approach uses more processing and can change quality, while the demuxer avoids that work when its input assumptions are met. See the FFmpeg FAQ and this 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion; the latter is community advice, not a YouTube requirement.
| Approach | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer | Input files have matching streams and compatible properties. | Can avoid re-encoding, but mixed formats can break the assumption. |
| Concat filter | Files need to be normalized and re-encoded into a consistent output. | Requires encoding work and a chosen output format; test performance on your host. |
The playlist syntax and paths can vary by operating system and FFmpeg build. Check the installed FFmpeg documentation and validate a short test run before starting an all-day stream. In particular, do not assume that every file path copied from another system will resolve on the machine running FFmpeg.
Prepare a local M3U-style list
- Put the media files in a location that will remain available for the entire run. Avoid moving, renaming, or disconnecting the storage while FFmpeg is using it.
- Create a plain-text list in playback order using the syntax supported by your installed FFmpeg build. Confirm every entry points to a real file on the streaming machine.
- Inspect representative files for their audio and video streams, codecs, resolution, frame rate, and duration. A long run can fail if a file is missing or has properties incompatible with the rest of a concat-demuxer sequence.
- Run a short local test of the list and watch FFmpeg’s output for file-open errors, stream mismatches, or encoder failures. If the demuxer rejects mixed assets, normalize or re-encode them, or use a filter-based workflow.
FFmpeg’s concat documentation and command options are covered in its CLI reference. Because the reviewed documentation does not establish one list-file syntax that works unchanged on every operating system and build, use the installed version’s documentation for the exact format rather than copying an unverified example.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet up the YouTube live event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
- In the event’s encoder settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the FFmpeg command or a private configuration used by your encoder. Follow the protocol and server URL YouTube displays for that key.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in a public script, screenshots, shared logs, or any place where another person could use it to send a feed to your channel.
- Wait for YouTube to receive the encoder feed, check the preview and stream health, and only then start the event when ready.
YouTube explains the stream URL and password-like key in its encoder setup guide and documents additional stream settings at Manage live stream settings.

For an ordinary encoder connection, do not substitute FFmpeg’s -f hls output mode for the protocol YouTube specifies. The HLS muxer creates a manifest and media segments; YouTube separately documents HLS ingest for specific cases, with its own setup requirements and segment-based delivery. See FFmpeg formats and YouTube HLS setup.
Choose encoder settings and verify the feed
YouTube’s current general encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS as the ordinary protocol path and H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 encoder options. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and an interval no longer than four seconds. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select values for your actual output and verify the current guidance before configuring a production stream: YouTube encoder settings.
| Example output | YouTube-published H.264 bitrate recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are recommendations published by YouTube, not measured performance results. They do not establish a bitrate for other codecs, resolutions, frame rates, or your specific connection. If you re-encode, configure the encoder’s output resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode, and keyframe interval deliberately. If you copy streams without re-encoding, confirm that the media’s existing properties fit the ingest requirements.

- Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators before the event starts and during operation.
- Leave upload headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% above the stream’s total bitrate and warn that network disruption can break a stream. See YouTube streaming tips.
Keep the stream running and recover from interruptions
Continuous operation depends on more than the playlist. The host must remain powered on, FFmpeg must keep running, the source files must remain accessible, and the network must sustain the upload. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but the cited guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted service for a particular FFmpeg command, computer, or connection.

- Watch FFmpeg’s output for missing-file errors, unexpected end of input, stream mismatch, or encoder failure.
- Monitor YouTube stream health and confirm that the event remains accessible.
- Plan how you will restart FFmpeg and reconnect the event after a host, network, or process failure.
- Test the exact media, encoding mode, and host you intend to use. The required CPU, memory, and power depend on whether you copy or re-encode streams, the codecs and resolution, and whether hardware encoding is involved; the cited sources do not establish minimum hardware specifications.
Common problems and fixes
FFmpeg cannot open a playlist item
Check that the file exists at the listed path on the streaming machine, that the path syntax is valid for its operating system, and that the running account can read it. A path that worked on your editing computer may not exist on a remote host.
The concat demuxer reports mismatched streams or fails between clips
The inputs may differ in codecs, stream layout, or time bases. Use the demuxer only for compatible files; otherwise normalize the assets or use a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes to consistent output. FFmpeg describes the distinction in its FAQ.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Confirm that the encoder is sending to the current event’s stream URL, that the associated key is correct and private, and that FFmpeg is still running without connection errors. Use the protocol YouTube displays for that key rather than assuming HLS or another ingest method.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The preview appears, but stream health is poor or the feed drops
Check whether total upload demand exceeds available capacity, whether the connection has interruptions, and whether the host is keeping up with any re-encoding. Reduce the output bitrate or encoding load if necessary, preserve upload headroom, and test again with representative media. YouTube warns that network disruption can break the stream in its streaming tips.

The stream starts but stops later
Look for process termination, a host sleep or restart, a disconnected drive, a missing later playlist file, a network outage, or an event restriction. Check both FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube’s live status, then restart the encoder and event as appropriate. A playlist does not provide automatic recovery when the computer or connection fails.
