To run a 24/7 YouTube aquarium channel from recorded footage, create an encoder-based live broadcast in YouTube Studio, then send it a continuous feed from a computer encoder or a cloud service. Before you start, verify that your channel can livestream, clear the rights to every image and sound, test the feed, and decide how you will save a separate copy: YouTube may not archive streams longer than 12 hours.

What you need before starting

  • A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take time, so enable it ahead of your planned launch. The minimum age for live streaming is 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements.
  • Recorded aquarium footage you are entitled to broadcast, plus permission for any music or other audio in it.
  • A broadcast created in YouTube Studio and an encoder—or cloud service—that can send the footage to YouTube using the broadcast’s ingestion URL and private stream key.
  • A plan for stream monitoring, recovery, and keeping an archive outside YouTube if you need a complete recording.

Prepare footage and confirm rights

Use footage you created or have permission to use for a livestream. Being the person who recorded a clip does not automatically clear music, logos, or other third-party material in the recording. Keep permission records for any licensed material, including audio.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies material, it may show a placeholder and tell you to stop using it; leaving the material in the stream can lead to interruption or termination. Even licensed content can trigger an interruption if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its livestream terms and conditions.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect an encoder

  1. Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming setup and complete any verification or activation steps shown for your channel. Confirm the channel is eligible before preparing a long broadcast.
  2. Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room and create a broadcast. Set its title, description, visibility, and other details before launch.
  3. Choose an encoder route. Use a compatible local encoder if you want to control the feed from your own computer, or a cloud service that accepts uploaded video and sends it to YouTube.
  4. Copy the connection details. In the broadcast’s encoder settings, copy the YouTube ingestion URL and private stream key into the matching fields in your encoder or cloud service. Treat the key like a password; do not share it publicly. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
  5. Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary low-latency content. Its RTMPS ingestion guide explains the protocol.
  6. Preview before going live. Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room. Check the aquarium image, audio, and stream health, then start the broadcast. Monitor it after launch so you can respond to interruptions.

Choose local or cloud operation

Option Where the feed runs What must stay available Best fit Check before choosing
Local encoder On your computer, using local footage The encoder computer and its network connection You want direct control of the encoder and source files Can the computer and connection remain available continuously? Check power use, encoder settings, and connection stability.
Cloud streaming service On the service’s remote infrastructure The cloud service and your account configuration You do not want a home computer to run the broadcast Review current price, upload limits, reliability, controls, data handling, and cancellation terms.

This is an operational comparison, not a measured performance or cost benchmark. The available sources do not establish universal uptime, power consumption, or total cost for either setup. YouTube does not prescribe one ideal resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, or computer specification for this aquarium use case. Consult its current encoder settings for the format you select, test your actual connection, and check the preview rather than relying on a generic setting.

Plan for archives and rewind

A continuous live URL is not a dependable archive of the entire broadcast. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams over 12 hours. If you need a replay or master copy, keep a local recording or arrange a separate archive workflow before going live. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Understand monetization risk

A loop is not automatically eligible or ineligible for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams; repetitive or mass-produced content may be ineligible under its inauthentic-content policy. On July 15, 2025, YouTube clarified and renamed its repetitious-content policy to “inauthentic content.” That policy does not determine in advance whether a particular aquarium channel qualifies. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies, and do not assume that a 24/7 broadcast will be approved for ads.

Troubleshooting common problems

YouTube does not accept the stream

  • Confirm live streaming is enabled and the channel has no current restriction.
  • Check that you copied the ingestion URL and stream key from the correct broadcast, and that each is in the matching encoder field.
  • If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Studio and replace the old key in your encoder.

The preview is missing or the broadcast drops

  • Confirm the encoder is running and connected to the internet, then check its connection details and YouTube’s stream-health status.
  • For a local setup, check that the computer has not gone to sleep and the connection remains active. For a cloud setup, verify the account configuration and service status.
  • Restart the encoder or reconnect the service, then wait for the preview to return before resuming the broadcast.

The stream is interrupted for copyright

  • Stop using the flagged footage or audio and replace it with material you have cleared.
  • If you have a licence, check with the rights holder whether your channel has been allowlisted through Content ID; possessing a licence alone may not prevent an interruption.

The livestream is not available as a full replay

Check the stream duration and do not assume YouTube captured a broadcast longer than 12 hours. Use your separately planned recording or archive if a complete replay is needed.
