To keep a 24/7 waterfall stream from peaking, test the actual video and sound you plan to broadcast, keep the signal below 0 dBFS, and add an OBS Limiter as the last audio filter. A limiter caps output peaks; it does not set a universal loudness target for nature ambience. You also need a continuity plan: run an encoder on a computer that stays on, or use a cloud service that streams prerecorded video to YouTube.
Prepare the video and confirm you can stream it
Choose a continuous video or a playlist that can loop cleanly. Listen through the recording for sudden loud splashes, clipping already present in the source, silence, and abrupt level changes at loop seams. Make sure you have the rights needed to use both the footage and its audio.
YouTube connects an encoder to a live stream using a server URL and stream key. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and enter its server URL and stream key in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Keep the audio below the clipping ceiling in OBS
Check the source before adding processing
Play the waterfall audio in OBS and watch the audio mixer meter. OBS explains that digital audio must stay below 0 dBFS to avoid clipping distortion; the mixer bar represents peak level. If the source itself is already distorted, a limiter cannot restore the missing clean audio. Lower excessive source or mixer gain rather than pushing the meter to its ceiling. See OBS’s audio mixer guide.

Add a limiter last in the filter chain
- In OBS, find the audio source you want to control, open its Filters, and add the Limiter audio filter.
- Keep the limiter at the end of that source’s audio filter chain. OBS specifically says the limiter should be the last filter.
- OBS documents defaults of a -6.00 dB threshold and 60 ms release. Treat these as starting defaults, not a guaranteed ideal setting for every recording or a YouTube loudness requirement.
- Replay the loudest passages and inspect the meter and listening preview. Adjust source gain and limiter settings only after hearing the result; the limiter’s purpose is to cap peaks, not to make the stream uniformly loud.
For filter behavior and settings, see the OBS Limiter Filter documentation.
Use a compressor only when levels vary
A compressor can reduce the likelihood of large peaks before the final ceiling, so it may help when the recording’s level varies substantially. OBS recommends placing a compressor near the beginning of the filter chain. A steady ambience track does not automatically need one; the limiter can remain the final peak control. See OBS’s Compressor Filter documentation.

Test the complete stream before leaving it unattended
- Start a private or otherwise appropriate test using the same footage and audio that will be used in the broadcast.
- Check the OBS meter during both quiet water and the loudest splashes. Listen to the preview and stream playback for distortion, sudden level jumps, silence, and audible loop seams.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and any messages in the live control room. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream quality while live.
- Once live, continue monitoring audio and video quality. A clean test at startup does not rule out a later source, connection, or encoder interruption.
YouTube’s recommended advanced RTMP/RTMPS settings include AAC or MP3 audio, 44.1 kHz for stereo, and 128 kbps for stereo. These are ingest settings, not a loudness target. YouTube does not prescribe a LUFS target or universal true-peak ceiling for waterfall ambience in the cited guidance. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live streaming tips.
Choose how the stream will stay live
A local encoder such as OBS gives you direct control over audio filters, but the computer, encoder, and internet connection need to remain available for the broadcast. A cloud service can keep prerecorded video running without leaving a home computer on. Whichever approach you use, plan how you will check stream health and respond if YouTube or the encoder disconnects.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to YouTube. Upload the waterfall recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Check the audio in your source before upload: cloud looping does not replace the OBS audio-filter workflow if you need to alter peaks. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for the archive and continuity limits
YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume an uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive under that guidance. If you need a recording, plan a separate local recording or shorter scheduled streams, and verify the resulting archive in YouTube Studio. A separate recording also gives you a way to review the loop and audio after the broadcast.
