You can keep a recorded music theory course live on YouTube by sending its video or playlist through an encoder to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The encoder can run on a computer you leave on, or a cloud service can play uploaded videos without keeping your computer at home running. Before announcing the stream, verify that your channel can livestream, test the course feed and its restart behavior, and plan around YouTube’s archive and copyright limits.
What you need for a continuous course stream
The basic setup is a verified YouTube channel with livestreaming enabled, the course recording or playlist, and an encoder or hosted service that sends the video to YouTube. YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder livestreams; an encoder is the appropriate route for a prepared course feed. It can be software on a computer or a hardware device. Expensive equipment is not a baseline requirement: choose a method suited to your course and test it with your available equipment.
- A YouTube channel verified and eligible to livestream.
- A course video or ordered playlist, with permission for every included recording and asset.
- An encoder or hosted playback service, plus a stable upload connection if you run the encoder locally.
- A separate backup of the course recording if you need to preserve it independently of YouTube’s live archive.

Check channel eligibility before scheduling
YouTube requires a verified channel and no livestreaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check the channel’s current status in YouTube Studio rather than assuming it is ready. YouTube for Artists advises enabling a first livestream at least 24 hours before the planned broadcast, so leave that lead time if this is your first one.

Open YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, and create a stream or schedule one. The exact options shown can depend on the channel and the Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to the configured stream.
Set up and test the recorded course feed
- Prepare the course. Choose the recording or playlist and confirm its playback order. Decide what should happen when the last video ends: repeat the playlist, stop, or move to another planned segment. Looping behavior is determined by your playback or hosting setup, not guaranteed by YouTube’s encoder instructions.
- Create the YouTube stream. In Studio, go to Create → Go Live, then create or schedule the stream. For an encoder stream, retrieve the server URL and stream key in the Live Control Room.
- Configure the encoder or hosted playback service. Enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the sending system, select the course file or playlist, and configure its repeat behavior. YouTube’s instruction is to enter its Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. Follow the encoder’s own current interface for where those fields appear.
- Run an unlisted test. YouTube for Artists recommends testing an unlisted stream. Check narration and musical examples, slide and notation readability on a phone-sized screen, chapter transitions, and what happens at the end of the file. Also test a restart and a simulated interruption if your setup allows it.
- Preview and start. Confirm the incoming picture and sound in the Live Control Room. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and select Go live when ready. Monitor stream health after launch.
Use representative course material in the test: a still slide alone may not reveal whether notation stays legible during transitions or whether quieter musical examples are audible.
Choose video and connection settings
Set output to a quality your encoder and upload connection can sustain. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into formats for viewers, so sending a higher bitrate does not guarantee every viewer receives that exact format. Measure the available upload speed and test the live feed rather than relying only on nominal internet-plan speeds.

Choose how to keep it running
Run a local software encoder
A computer running an encoder gives you direct control over the feed, but it must stay powered on and connected for the stream to continue. The computer, encoder, playback arrangement, and home or studio internet connection are all potential points of interruption. Verify that the playback setup repeats the course as intended and test recovery after a dropped connection; YouTube’s setup documentation does not prescribe a particular looping application or guarantee that a local setup will restart itself.
Use a hosted cloud stream
A hosted service can play uploaded course videos from the cloud, so your computer does not need to remain on. Compare options on course-file and playlist playback, repeat behavior, interruption recovery, monitoring, local backup, cost, and quality control. YouTube lists both encoder approaches and a browser-based 24/7 cloud service, but that fact alone does not establish comparable features or prices for other vendors.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not promise viewers a complete replay of one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast. YouTube also recommends keeping a local archive recording.
- Keep a local master recording if you need a dependable copy.
- Publish the course separately as an on-demand video if students need a stable replay.
- If you want live-session archives, consider shorter sessions with a deliberate restart and confirm that each session finishes and archives as expected.

Clear rights for the course material
You are responsible for having the rights needed to livestream the material. Review more than the course narration: check full music recordings, song excerpts, sheet music, backing tracks, images, and contributions from students or guests. Educational use does not automatically establish that every asset is cleared; permissions and legal rules can vary by territory.
YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or lead to termination. Even a track you are licensed to use may require its owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with a label or distributor when planning to use copyright-protected music. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and YouTube for Artists’ live-stream guidance before launch.
Understand monetization separately from livestream access
Being able to livestream does not make a channel eligible to earn money. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams; monetized content is expected to be original and authentic, and repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible. A creator-produced course may provide educational value, but eligibility depends on the channel’s access to the relevant program and YouTube’s current policy review. Do not treat monetization as guaranteed. Check YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
