You can loop original fairy tale videos on YouTube from a Mac mini with OBS Studio: enable YouTube Live, add a local video or playlist as an OBS source, connect OBS using the stream key, and test the broadcast before making it public. The loop keeps the media playing; it does not guarantee that the Mac, internet connection, or YouTube broadcast will stay connected unattended for 24/7.
Before you start
Gather your finished story videos, narration, music, and artwork, and confirm you have permission to use every element. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance tells creators to ensure their audio and video do not infringe others’ rights: YouTube live-stream settings.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. Verify the channel and check for live-streaming restrictions. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your launch. YouTube also lists no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days among its eligibility conditions: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming and YouTube live streaming tips.
- A Mac mini running macOS 11 or later, with an Intel or Apple Silicon processor and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU. OBS lists these as baseline system requirements, not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini can encode your chosen stream smoothly: OBS system requirements.
- OBS Studio, your local video files, and a stable internet connection with enough upload bandwidth for the stream.
Set up the Mac mini and OBS playlist
- Install OBS Studio. Download the macOS version using the official OBS Mac installation guide. Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast.
- Add one story video. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Add the video file and enable Loop in its properties. Confirm the picture fits the canvas and that narration and other audio play at an appropriate level.
- Or add a playlist. Install VLC on macOS first, then add a VLC Video Source and select the story files in the desired order. Check that Loop Playlist is enabled; OBS documents it as enabled by default. Preview the transitions and confirm the final story returns to the beginning as expected: OBS Media Sources.
- Keep the scene simple while testing. Extra filters, overlays, and animated elements add work for the system. OBS’s quick-start guidance recommends checking that the stream works before making further changes: OBS Quick Start Guide.
Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, then set its title, visibility, audience selection, and other metadata. YouTube’s encoder-streaming documentation describes the Live Control Room workflow: Stream with an encoder.
- In the stream settings, copy the stream key. Treat it like a password: it identifies where OBS sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Do not share it in screenshots, public posts, or an OBS profile you distribute. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If OBS offers an account connection or manual key setup, use the method available in your installed version and keep the key private.
- Open Settings > Output and Video to choose the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, CBR rate control, and a two-second keyframe interval for its general settings. Available codecs and options vary with protocol and configuration; YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options. RTMPS encrypts the connection. Follow YouTube’s current recommended settings for your target resolution and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal: YouTube encoder settings.
Test before making the fairy tale stream public
Start with an unlisted or private test where appropriate. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect stream health before making the event public. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, so test an actual story segment—not a silent still frame—and, if possible, let the playlist reach its loop point.

- Confirm that OBS reports no encoding overload and that Live Control Room shows a healthy incoming stream.
- Watch a playback device other than the streaming Mac if available, so you can catch problems not obvious in the OBS preview.
- Verify the broadcast’s title, visibility, audience setting, and other metadata before publishing.
A loop is only repeat playback inside OBS. It does not automatically restart the YouTube broadcast after a network interruption or establish that delivery will continue without intervention.

Check upload bandwidth and reliability
Measure upload speed, not just download speed, and compare it with the total outgoing bitrate from OBS. YouTube recommends about 20% more upload bandwidth than the total stream bitrate; its guidance is to “Make sure your outbound connection is enough to send your stream bitrate.” See YouTube streaming tips.
If the connection is marginal or variable, lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. A wired Ethernet connection can be a practical way to avoid relying on Wi-Fi, but it cannot prevent an internet-service or power outage. Use a cable and network setup that fit your home; YouTube’s guidance is about reliable bandwidth, not a guarantee from any particular cable category.

What 24/7 operation from a Mac mini requires
The Mac mini must remain powered, OBS must keep running, the source files must remain accessible, and the internet connection must continue carrying the stream. The published OBS requirements do not establish performance for an unspecified Mac mini generation, chosen resolution, scene, or playlist. Test the actual machine and configuration for a sustained period before relying on it.
