You can stream recorded medical lectures as a continuous YouTube live feed by sending a sequence of video files through an encoder or playout system. First verify that the channel can livestream, test the entire playback and recording workflow, and decide how viewers will access replays: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a separate local archive, and review rights, institutional approvals, and patient privacy before broadcasting.
What a 24/7 lecture stream can—and cannot—do
YouTube’s encoder-based live workflow can represent a continuous broadcast: its API documentation includes an example of an ongoing 24/7 broadcast. That demonstrates a supported broadcast model, not guaranteed uptime or an automatic lecture-playlist feature. An encoder or playout system must sequence the recorded videos and send the resulting feed to YouTube. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes a liveStream as the media input and a liveBroadcast as the viewer-facing video; it also describes using the same stream with a separate broadcast while a continuous broadcast remains live.
Plan separately for the live destination and the archive. A continuous feed can be convenient for viewers who want a channel that is always live, but YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not depend on the live broadcast as the only copy of the lectures.

Confirm livestream access
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Confirm access in YouTube Studio before building the schedule; a restriction can prevent the planned broadcast from starting. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Review every recording for rights and privacy
Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and YouTube may restrict or remove a stream. Before adding lectures to the rotation, confirm that you have permission to broadcast the recordings, slides, music, and any third-party material; obtain required speaker and institutional approvals; and review the footage for confidential or identifiable patient information. The general platform guidance does not decide whether a particular lecture meets those obligations. Read YouTube’s live-streaming guidance and YouTube’s Terms of Service.
Choose continuous streaming or shorter broadcasts
| Operating pattern | Advantages | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| One continuous broadcast | Creates a persistent live destination for viewers; the YouTube API documentation describes an ongoing 24/7 broadcast. | If it runs beyond 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured at all. Test the chosen encoder’s behavior and keep an independent local recording. |
| Repeated broadcasts shorter than 12 hours | Can provide discrete opportunities for YouTube replay capture; streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. | Requires dependable scheduling and restart behavior. The under-12-hour guidance is not a guarantee that every stream will be archived; test the process and retain local copies. |
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, including encoder streams, and explicitly warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The word “may” matters: it is not a promise that every shorter stream will be available, nor a claim that every longer one will be lost. For either pattern, record locally and verify the actual break, restart, and replay behavior before relying on it. See Archive live streams.

Set up the recorded-video feed
- Prepare the lecture files. Arrange the recordings in the intended order, check that each plays correctly, and make a separate local backup plan. Decide whether lectures should repeat in a fixed order or whether the feed needs scheduled gaps or handoffs; those behaviors depend on the selected playout system.
- Enable and prepare the YouTube live broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live broadcast and select the encoder workflow. Confirm that the channel is eligible before setting a start time. Keep the stream key private; enter it only in the encoder or playout system that will send the feed.
- Configure the encoder or playout system. Add the recorded lectures to its playback sequence, select the appropriate YouTube ingest settings for that workflow, and connect it using the stream key. YouTube’s API documentation explains the distinction between the media-carrying stream and the viewer-facing broadcast, but does not mean Studio itself automatically turns a folder of lectures into a rotating playlist.
- Preview and test before launch. Start a test transmission and inspect the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, and playback order. Check that the audience-facing watch page works on a phone as well as a computer, and confirm that the local recording file is growing. YouTube’s general event checklist advises setting up at least two hours ahead and starting an encoder 15 minutes before an event; those are event-planning recommendations, not special requirements for every continuous feed. Follow YouTube’s live-streaming checklist.
- Monitor the feed and the local copy. During operation, watch for picture or audio failures, confirm the sequence continues as intended, and check that local recording storage remains available. Do not assume an always-on stream will be uninterrupted; identify who will notice a failure and what restart process they can use.
- Verify replay behavior after a test. Check the channel and watch page after ending a test broadcast, and confirm whether the replay and local recording are usable. If replays are essential, test the exact shorter-broadcast schedule and restart process before making it routine.
When HLS settings apply
HLS is one specific YouTube ingestion route, not a universal set of settings for every encoder. If your encoder uses YouTube’s HLS path, Google’s guide specifies muxed M2TS audio and video, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and a closed GOP. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps; segments of one to four seconds are recommended, and segments must not exceed five seconds. Check the current HLS ingestion requirements and configure those values only when using HLS. For a different ingest protocol, follow that workflow’s applicable YouTube settings instead.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The broadcast will not start: Check that the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Confirm the scheduled broadcast and encoder connection, and make sure the correct stream key is configured.
- The preview is blank or the stream disconnects: Check the encoder’s connection and ingest configuration, then verify that the selected protocol’s media packaging and codecs match YouTube’s requirements. For HLS, use the specific requirements above rather than applying them to another protocol.
- Viewers hear no audio or see a faulty picture: Inspect the Live Control Room preview and the source files, then test playback on the watch page and a mobile device. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality during the stream.
- The lecture sequence stops or repeats incorrectly: Check the playout system’s queue and playback settings, then run a full-sequence test. YouTube’s API documentation does not establish that Studio automatically rotates prerecorded files.
- No YouTube replay appears: Check the broadcast duration and archive status. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; even for a shorter stream, keep and verify the local recording rather than treating automatic archiving as guaranteed.
- The live feed ends unexpectedly: Use the tested restart or recovery procedure for the chosen encoder or playout system, then check whether the broadcast resumed and whether the local recording continued. The general YouTube documentation does not guarantee continuous uptime or define recovery behavior for every third-party system.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube-only prerecorded feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and each slot streams the uploaded file as made—up to 4K 60fps—at one flat price per slot. It includes 10 GB storage per slot, pooled across active slots, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
