You can keep a kirtan channel live on YouTube without leaving a home computer or OBS running: prepare recordings you have permission to use, send them from a cloud relay to YouTube Live with your stream key, and monitor the feed and its archive plan. First confirm your channel can livestream and clear the rights for every recording, composition, and visual.
Before you set up the relay: eligibility and rights
Confirm YouTube Live is available to the channel
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. For a prerecorded program with prepared visuals, use an encoder-style live stream in YouTube Studio; a cloud relay performs the sending work that a desktop encoder would otherwise do.
Clear each recording, composition, and visual
A devotional or traditional subject does not automatically make a particular recording free to stream. Check permissions for the actual sound recording, performance, composition, arrangement, and artwork or video, including the territories where the stream will be available and any archive you plan to retain. Keep written licenses or permissions. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can interrupt or terminate a broadcast, and a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel even when you have a license. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary worldwide rights, including relevant music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Choose the playback format
Assemble a long-form video or playlist from authorized recordings. Decide whether viewers will see a static image, artwork with motion, or other cleared visuals. These are production choices, not special YouTube requirements for kirtan. Before going live, check that audio is audible throughout, levels do not clip, and transitions or loop boundaries do not introduce silence or abrupt changes.

Check the relay’s media and operating limits
Confirm with the cloud-relay provider that it supports your file format and audio, continuous looping or playlists, YouTube RTMPS, the intended stream format, and recovery after a disconnect. Also check storage and bandwidth limits, stream-key handling, alerts, recording or export options, support, and current terms. A provider’s description of its own service is not independent proof of uninterrupted operation; ask how it monitors and recovers a feed.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the relay
- Verify and check the channel: In YouTube Studio, confirm verification and that live streaming is available without an active restriction.
- Create the live stream: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream and open its connection settings. Copy the current ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream; do not rely on an endpoint copied from an old tutorial.
- Protect the stream key: Treat it like a password. Enter it only in the relay’s secure destination settings; do not put it in a public page, video, chat, or shared document. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the relay.
- Choose RTMPS when supported: YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS. Use the exact server and connection details supplied in Studio or the official YouTube documentation; YouTube documents port 443 for RTMPS ingest. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Configure the cloud relay: Upload or select the cleared program, choose YouTube as the destination, enter the stream details, and enable continuous playback or playlist looping. Confirm the relay accepts the media and audio configuration before starting.
- Run a controlled test: Start an unlisted or otherwise controlled broadcast. Check the YouTube preview, sound, picture, stream health, rights status, and watch-page access from a viewer’s perspective. Resolve warnings before making the channel public.
Use encoder settings that match YouTube and your relay
There is no single bitrate or resolution that fits every source file and relay. Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings and the relay’s supported options rather than copying an untested generic profile. YouTube’s guidance recommends supported codecs, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Match the output to the source and verify the result in a test stream. A cloud service may encode or pass through media differently, so confirm what it actually sends.

Monitor continuity, bandwidth, and recovery
During the test and while live
- Inspect YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators for dropped frames, interruptions, or audio/video problems.
- Listen for clipping, silence, unexpected track changes, and loop-boundary faults; watch for frozen or missing visuals.
- Ask the relay operator what reconnect behavior, monitoring, alerts, and incident recovery it provides. Do not assume that cloud hosting alone guarantees uninterrupted service.
- If you configure a backup encoder, test failover and ensure the backup does not create a conflicting stream.
If you send the feed from your own connection
For a locally generated feed, YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. Include both primary and backup encoders in that estimate. This is a network-capacity recommendation for a local connection, not a substitute for checking a cloud relay’s own limits. YouTube’s live-streaming tips also recommend setting up an event encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Those are event-oriented suggestions, not a requirement to delay a continuously running relay.

Plan the archive separately from the live feed
Do not count on YouTube to retain one uninterrupted 24/7 replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If replay matters, arrange a separate recording or divide programming into shorter broadcasts, and verify the archive after testing. YouTube recommends recording a local backup; if the relay is cloud-hosted, ask whether it can record or export and make a separate backup plan that you control. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: Check that the relay is running, the ingest URL and stream key match the current Studio stream, and the selected RTMP or RTMPS mode is supported. If the key was exposed, reset it and update the relay.
- The preview works but viewers cannot access the stream: Review the stream’s visibility and scheduling in Studio, then test access using a viewer account or private browser session.
- YouTube flags or interrupts the broadcast: Review the copyright notice and identify the matched recording or other content. Stop or replace material for which you lack the needed rights; if licensed content is matched, contact the rights owner about allowlisting before resuming.
- Audio is silent, clipped, or breaks at a loop: Inspect the source and playlist transitions, then retest the relay’s audio handling and output.
- The feed disconnects or does not restart: Check the relay’s status and reconnect settings, then ask its operator about alerts and incident recovery. Run a controlled failover test if you have a backup path.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the broadcast duration and archive status. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so use the separate recording plan rather than assuming YouTube retained the full feed.
