You can run a 24/7 kids’ channel in 720p from a modest PC, but 720p alone does not guarantee a stable stream. Use a simple 720p scene, start at 30 fps, configure OBS and YouTube’s encoder settings conservatively, and test the actual computer and internet connection under sustained load before going public. You will also need a verified YouTube channel, appropriate rights for every video and audio track, and a plan for outages and archives.
What you need to know before starting
Streaming continuously is a sustained workload: encoding, cooling, power, storage, and network reliability all matter. OBS says that a compatible system does not necessarily have enough capacity to stream or record; its workload varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the requirements for the OBS release you install, then validate the whole setup on your own PC rather than treating a baseline requirement or a speed test as proof of 24/7 capability. - Confirm the PC’s CPU, GPU and available hardware encoders, memory, cooling, storage, and network connection.
- Use a simple 1280 × 720 canvas and begin at 30 fps. This is a conservative starting point, not a guarantee that a particular PC can sustain the workload.
- Remove unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays, filters, and rescaling steps.
- Prefer wired networking where practical. It is an operational recommendation, not a YouTube requirement.
OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help choose initial settings. Its suggestions still need to be tested with the actual content and runtime you plan to use. OBS also documents its streaming guide and configuration options. Hardware encoding may reduce CPU load on compatible equipment, but not every low-power PC has a suitable encoder; compare the available options on your own system.
Configure OBS and YouTube for 720p
Set the output and encoder
- Run the wizard: In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its prompts. Treat the result as a starting point.
- Set a simple video output: In Settings > Video, use a 1280 × 720 output resolution. Start at 30 fps unless the program’s motion genuinely benefits from 60 fps and your PC passes a sustained test.
- Choose an encoder: In Settings > Output, select an available H.264 encoder. Test x264 and a compatible hardware encoder if both are available; compare image quality, CPU load, heat, and stability during a long run. No encoder is universally best for every low-power computer.
- Use CBR: For the YouTube H.264 baseline, set rate control to CBR and video bitrate to 8 Mbps at either 720p30 or 720p60. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists 8 Mbps for both frame rates. YouTube live encoder settings
- Set keyframes: Use a two-second keyframe interval, which YouTube recommends.
The 8 Mbps figure is the recommended video bitrate, not the total internet capacity your stream needs. Allow additional upstream headroom for audio and connection variation. The sources do not specify a universal margin, so test the real connection while sending representative video and audio. A nominal speed-test result cannot establish that the upload will remain stable all day.

Connect OBS to YouTube securely
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room to create or schedule the stream.
- For a broadly compatible setup, choose H.264 over RTMPS in OBS’s stream configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Copy the YouTube stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat it like a password: do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start with an unlisted test. Check the picture, sound, movement, bitrate, dropped frames, and YouTube’s stream-health messages before making the broadcast public.
YouTube’s encoder page recommends testing before a live event and monitoring stream health. For a 24/7 channel, repeat that validation with the actual looping playlist and audio, and keep the stream private or unlisted until the test is stable.
Test the PC for continuous operation
Run the complete scene for multiple hours before announcing continuous availability. Include the overlays, transitions, audio, and sources that will be present during normal operation. Monitor OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics, YouTube’s stream-health messages, temperatures, and whether the connection remains stable.

- 30 or 60 fps: 30 fps is a sensible lower-load starting point for slow-moving cartoons, art, or slides. Choose 60 fps only if fast motion needs it and the PC remains stable under load. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate is 8 Mbps for both 720p rates.
- CPU or hardware encoding: Compare sustained CPU use, picture quality at the selected bitrate, compatibility, heat, and noise on the specific computer. The available hardware encoder depends on the PC.
- Recording while streaming: A local recording can provide a fallback, but adds storage use and may add encoding or disk load. Test it together with the live stream before relying on it.
Do not assume that a computer which works for an hour will run reliably around the clock. Plan what you will do if a media source freezes, the encoder fails, the internet drops, or the PC restarts. Validate a restart and recovery procedure before depending on it; an automatic reboot is useful only if OBS and the broadcast recover safely afterward.

Plan for outages and YouTube archives
YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be your only source of a replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. YouTube live stream archives

If dependable replays matter, consider planned shorter broadcasts and local recording. Shorter sessions can make archives more predictable under YouTube’s guidance, but they require reliable restarts and add operational work. Local recording consumes storage and can increase PC load, so test its effect on your setup.
A UPS may help bridge a brief power interruption. Choose one based on the measured load and the ride-through or shutdown time you need; no single capacity or runtime fits an unspecified PC. A UPS cannot prevent internet outages, PC failures, or YouTube downtime.

You need the rights to broadcast every video, clip, song, and other audio in the playlist. A publicly viewable video, purchased copy, or credit line does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it. Check channel eligibility and launch

- Create or schedule the broadcast in the Live Control Room. Set the title, description, privacy, and audience designation deliberately.
- Connect OBS using the stream key, then run an unlisted test with the final playlist and audio.
- Confirm stream health, image, sound, motion, dropped frames, and your response to a source, network, or PC interruption.
- Go public only after the stream is stable and the audience designation and broadcast rights are in order.
