To turn videos stored on a NAS into a 24/7 kids’ channel, use a virtual-channel generator such as Tunarr or ErsatzTV Legacy to organize a parent-reviewed library into a schedule, then watch that channel through a compatible TV app using a virtual tuner or M3U playlist. The NAS supplies the files; the channel software creates the schedule, and a separate player displays it. You do not need an antenna for this kind of channel.

What you need—and how the parts fit together

A NAS-based channel is a local media setup, not a broadcast station. The basic path is:

  1. Media library: The NAS stores the children’s videos, or a media server such as Plex or Jellyfin indexes them.
  2. Virtual-channel generator: Tunarr or ErsatzTV turns the available library into one or more scheduled channels.
  3. Delivery route: The generator exposes the channel as a virtual HDHomeRun tuner or an M3U playlist, depending on the software and client.
  4. Playback client: A compatible TV app or media-server client tunes in to the channel.

These are distinct components. Check that the chosen generator can access the library and that your intended player supports the delivery route before building a full schedule. Tunarr documents channels sourced from Plex or Jellyfin and delivery through a virtual tuner or M3U files: Tunarr documentation. Jellyfin documents M3U and HDHomeRun tuner support for Live TV: Jellyfin Live TV documentation.

Choose channel software for your library and player

Option Library sources documented Delivery and workflow Best fit
Tunarr Plex or Jellyfin media libraries. Configure channels and schedules, then use its virtual HDHomeRun tuner route or generated M3U files. Documentation describes Docker and standalone binaries. A Plex or Jellyfin household that wants scheduled channels and a choice of tuner or M3U delivery.
ErsatzTV Legacy Local libraries and Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby integrations. Its documentation says media-server imports support movies and shows; local libraries support additional media kinds. Its documented quick-start proceeds through installation, adding media, creating collections and channels, building schedules, and configuring clients. A household that wants to build channels from a local source or one of the listed media servers. The project identifies these materials and product as “ErsatzTV Legacy”; review its current project status and installation notes before adopting it.
Jellyfin Live TV Not a virtual-channel generator for stored collections by itself; its Live TV documentation covers tuners and guide data, including M3U and HDHomeRun. Pair it with a virtual-channel generator when you want a stored library presented as scheduled channels. A Jellyfin household using Jellyfin as part of the server or client path, rather than expecting its Live TV feature alone to create a schedule from a video collection.
Plex Live TV Plex can accept a virtual tuner for a NAS-file channel. Its broadcast TV and DVR features are separate and optional. Plex distinguishes virtual channels from over-the-air TV: broadcast reception requires an antenna and compatible tuner, while DVR recording requires an active Plex Pass. A Plex household using a virtual tuner for its channel. The antenna and DVR requirements apply to broadcast/DVR use, not inherently to a channel generated from NAS files.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Build a child-safe channel step by step

  1. Make the library accessible. Put the videos in a NAS folder or media-server library that your chosen generator supports. Confirm access from the machine or container running the channel software; a folder visible to the NAS itself may not automatically be visible to another host or container.
  2. Make a dedicated, reviewed collection. Separate the videos intended for the channel from the rest of the household library. Have an adult review the actual titles and versions; do not treat a platform’s library restrictions as a guarantee about Live TV channels.
  3. Install and connect the generator. Follow the current installation notes for Tunarr or ErsatzTV Legacy, then add the supported local library or media-server source. Avoid assuming that a particular NAS model, package, or installation method is supported without checking its current documentation.
  4. Create collections, channels, and schedules. Group programming in a way that suits your household—for example, by age range or viewing time—and create the channel schedule from the curated collection. Exact configuration labels may differ by software version.
  5. Select a delivery route and configure the player. Use the virtual HDHomeRun route if both generator and client support it, or import the generated M3U playlist into a compatible IPTV player. Jellyfin’s Live TV documentation covers its tuner options; client compatibility still needs to be checked for your setup.
  6. Test with the child’s actual account and TV. Check channel start-up, changes between programs, the end of one video and start of the next, subtitles, audio tracks, and what the child can access in the playback app. Keep an adult-controlled account available to fix the collection or channel if a title slips through.

Choose a stream mode with the host and client in mind

ErsatzTV documents three relevant modes. They differ in transcoding, features, and client behavior, so test the actual combination of host, files, and player rather than assuming one mode is best for every NAS.

Mode Transcoding and features Trade-off to check
HLS Segmenter Transcodes, supports watermarks, and is described by ErsatzTV as performing best at program boundaries. Transcoding may increase host workload; test transitions and playback on the intended client.
MPEG-TS A light wrapper around the HLS Segmenter mode. Use when a client requires an HDHomeRun tuner; verify the specific client’s behavior.
HLS Direct Does not transcode and can work better on low-power systems; it lacks watermarks. Some clients may have problems at program boundaries. Test transitions and file compatibility.

ErsatzTV’s channel documentation describes these modes: ErsatzTV channels. It does not specify a universal CPU or NAS requirement. Plex also notes that some apps may not play recorded content when the Plex server is on a low-power NAS without transcoding support; treat that as a reason to test your particular files and client, not as proof that every virtual-channel setup needs transcoding: Plex DVR & Live TV FAQ.

Do not rely on parental profiles alone

Plex states that its restriction profiles for managed users apply to movie and TV libraries and video-on-demand, but not to Live TV content or channels. The Plex Support article was last modified June 23, 2023: Plex Parental Controls. For a virtual kids’ channel, curate the source collection, test access using the child’s account on the actual player, and limit that account to the intended channel where the software permits it.

Check rights before sharing beyond your household

The cited software documentation explains how these applications handle libraries and channels; it does not establish whether you have rights to stream particular programs or distribute them to other people. Use content you are authorized to access and stream, and check the relevant licenses and local law before sharing beyond your household. The answer depends on the titles, territory, and audience.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

  • The generator cannot find NAS videos: Check that its host or container can read the correct NAS path and that the account running the software has permission. If you use a media-server integration, confirm that the library is indexed and accessible there.
  • The channel does not appear in the player: Confirm the selected route is supported by that player, then recheck the virtual tuner or M3U configuration. A generator, media server, and player are separate components; success in one does not confirm end-to-end compatibility.
  • A video will not play or playback is unstable: Test that file with the intended client and stream mode. If transcoding is required by the file/client combination, verify that the host can handle it; the cited documentation gives no universal hardware threshold.
  • Playback breaks at program changes: Test boundaries with the selected mode. ErsatzTV notes that HLS Direct can have boundary issues with some clients; HLS Segmenter is described as performing best at program boundaries.
  • The child can see unsuitable Live TV content: Do not assume library restrictions cover channels. Recheck the curated source collection and test the child profile in the actual playback app; Plex explicitly excludes Live TV channels from its managed-user restriction profiles.
  • Subtitles, audio, or channel changes behave unexpectedly: Test the specific file and client before relying on the channel for unsupervised viewing. Keep an adult account available to adjust the library or schedule.

Optional playback hardware

A TV device is not inherently required if a compatible player is already available. Jellyfin lists Amazon among its client platforms, making an Amazon Fire TV device a plausible option, but the cited sources do not verify any particular retail model, app version, codec, or Tunarr/ErsatzTV combination. Confirm support for the exact model and chosen playback path before buying hardware: Jellyfin.
