Use Google Drive as a permitted source for video files, not as the audience-facing stream. Download or stage authorized videos, feed them from a continuously running playlist player into an encoder, then send that feed to a YouTube Live stream associated with a broadcast. YouTube’s 24/7 model supports a persistent stream; the specific Drive-to-playlist automation must be chosen and tested separately.
How the 24/7 setup fits together
There are three separate jobs: storing and staging the media, playing it continuously, and delivering the live feed through YouTube. Google’s YouTube Live documentation distinguishes the stream carrying the audio and video from the broadcast viewers watch. A persistent stream can be associated with a broadcast; the stream and broadcast are not the same resource.
- Google Drive: a source for files you have the rights and permission to download.
- Playout: a player or playlist process that selects videos, loops them, and sends a continuous output.
- Encoder and YouTube Live: the encoder sends that output to YouTube’s ingest service; YouTube presents it through a broadcast.
Drive does not, by itself, create a continuous live channel. The Google documentation covers Drive downloads and YouTube ingestion as separate functions; it does not certify a particular Drive-to-YouTube playlist application or unattended setup.
Prepare the videos and confirm you can use them
Check rights and download access
Before making a children’s animation public, confirm you have permission to reproduce it as a continuous livestream and to download each file. A Drive link or access to a shared folder is not evidence that you have redistribution rights. For binary video files, Google’s Drive API documents downloads through files.get with alt=media. API users need an OAuth scope that allows reading file content and should check that capabilities.canDownload is true. An authorized browser download is another possible route when the file owner and access settings allow it.

Stage the files outside an audience delivery workflow
Use Drive as a source or staging point, then place the files in a permitted local or cloud storage arrangement for playout. Do not make Drive serve each viewer as though it were a large-scale video CDN. Google for Developers’ Drive API Terms of Service state: “Using Drive as a replacement for a large-scale content delivery network (CDN) is not allowed.”
Drive API limits are also operational constraints, not a promise of video-streaming capacity. Google’s quota documentation describes a model effective May 1, 2026 that includes a per-project daily egress threshold of 1 TB per day; exceeding quota can produce 403 or 429 errors. Projects that used the API from November 2025 through April 2026 may remain on the prior quota model. Check the limit applicable to your project rather than treating the figure as guaranteed throughput or permission to rebroadcast files.

Build a playlist that can actually run unattended
Select a playout and encoder setup that can read staged files, repeat the playlist without gaps, and recover after an application, machine, or connection interruption. Verify the exact player, encoder version, restart behavior, and YouTube ingest settings for your environment: no specific app or end-to-end Drive playlist workflow is established here. For a long-running channel, test video transitions, audio continuity, and a full loop before relying on it in public.
Set up YouTube Live and connect the feed
- Confirm live access for the channel. Check that the channel can create and operate a live broadcast before building an unattended schedule. Channel eligibility and activation status are specific to the account.
- Create or select a YouTube Live stream. The stream is the incoming audio/video feed. Choose the ingestion route supported by your encoder and the YouTube setup you are using. YouTube documents RTMP stream resources; HLS ingestion has different transport and format requirements, so do not assume settings for one route apply to the other.
- Protect the stream key. Add the YouTube stream key to the encoder’s stream configuration. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, include it in screen captures, or expose it in a shared configuration. If it is exposed, replace or reset it using the channel’s current live controls and update the encoder.
- Create the viewer-facing broadcast and associate it with the stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API supports creating and managing live events, associating streams, and changing broadcast states. A persistent feed can be used with a separate broadcast; creating or ending a broadcast is distinct from stopping the underlying stream.
- Start with a private validation. Confirm YouTube receives the feed, the video and audio are in sync, transitions do not leave long black or silent gaps, and the broadcast is visible as intended. Simulate an interruption and verify how your chosen player and encoder resume before scheduling public operation.
Choose output settings without guessing
Resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, and ingest protocol must agree with the encoder output and the current YouTube Live requirements for the selected route. The exact numeric settings depend on the source files, encoder, and ingest configuration; no tested values or version-specific settings are established for this Drive-to-YouTube workflow. Use the current YouTube encoder guidance and the encoder’s controls for the route you selected, rather than copying settings for a different protocol or assuming an animation file’s properties are suitable for continuous output.

- Keep the output format consistent across the playlist where possible, and test transitions between files with different resolutions, frame rates, or audio layouts.
- Check the encoder’s stream-health information and YouTube’s received-feed status during the private test.
- Confirm the playlist process continues after the final item and that the encoder reconnects as intended after a network or process interruption.
- If you use HLS ingestion, follow its specific format and transport requirements rather than applying RTMP assumptions.
Set the audience accurately for children’s animation
Animation is not automatically categorized by YouTube based only on its format. Declare the audience accurately in YouTube’s controls. The Live Streaming API exposes selfDeclaredMadeForKids to set a broadcast’s child-directed status; madeForKids is a read-only status field.
YouTube says made-for-kids live streams have feature restrictions. Its listed restrictions include personalized advertising, comments, cards and end screens, live chat and live chat donations, notifications, Super Chat and Super Stickers, miniplayer playback, and saving to playlists. Channel-level made-for-kids settings can remove channel features as well. Plan moderation and viewer interaction around the applicable YouTube controls; these feature notes are not a complete account of legal obligations.

Ways to keep a YouTube live feed running

Test and operate the channel before going public
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test with the actual files, playlist, encoder, and YouTube ingest route.
- Observe at least one complete playlist cycle, including the transition from the last item back to the first. Listen for silence, abrupt changes, or audio that drifts out of sync.
- Interrupt the player, encoder, and network separately where practical. Record which component stops and verify the actual recovery procedure rather than assuming it is automatic.
- Check that the correct broadcast is associated with the stream and that the audience designation and resulting viewer features match your channel’s needs.
- Decide who will monitor the feed and respond to a failed process, expired access, quota error, or YouTube ingest interruption.
