You can stream a prepared fan-noise video to YouTube Live with an encoder, but do not assume one live session will stay up uninterrupted around the clock. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; its cited guidance does not promise indefinite sessions or a seamless 24/7 handoff. Prepare a video and audio feed you have rights to use, configure an encoder, test it in YouTube Studio, and plan to monitor the stream.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
- Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days.
- YouTube says live streamers must be at least 16 years old.
- If this is your first live stream, enable the feature in advance: YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guide and live streaming tips.
Prepare the fan-noise video and audio
Assemble the sound and visuals into a feed your encoder can send to YouTube Live. Use audio and video that you own or have permission to use in both a live stream and its archive. YouTube’s official guidance does not prescribe a particular fan-noise spectrum, loudness, equalization, or source-loop duration for sleep; choose and test the sound for your intended audience rather than presenting a particular setting as a YouTube requirement.
A static or gently moving visual is a creative choice, not a platform requirement. Check that the audio plays continuously and that the visual behaves as intended before making the stream public.
Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream.
- In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL and stream key for the encoder workflow.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as the stream’s “password and address.” Enter it only in the encoder you control; reset it if you believe it has been exposed. See Manage live stream settings.
Configure the encoder and test the feed
- Choose an encoder that can play your prepared audio/video feed and send it to YouTube. YouTube documents both software and professional hardware encoders; extra equipment depends on the setup and is not automatically necessary.
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the encoder’s streaming settings.
- Set audio to AAC or MP3. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Select video quality your upload connection can sustain reliably; the right choice depends on your connection and content.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test with the actual fan-noise audio and representative visuals. Check the Live Control Room preview, listen on the devices your audience is likely to use, and review stream health before inviting viewers.
YouTube recommends a test stream and monitoring the audio/video feed. Its encoder settings guidance covers general technical settings; these are not sleep-audio mastering instructions.

Go live and supervise the stream
- Start the encoder and wait for its feed to appear in Live Control Room.
- Review the preview and stream-health indicators, then start the live event in YouTube Studio.
- Check the stream periodically for encoder interruptions, YouTube alerts, and audio or video problems. End the event and stop the encoder when you are done.
Plan for sessions, archiving, and interruptions
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one session can run indefinitely, that longer sessions will be archived the same way, or that restarting will preserve an uninterrupted audience experience. If a stream must be available around the clock, treat session duration, restart timing, monitoring, and recovery as operational issues to plan and test—not as a guarantee supplied by YouTube.
The cited guidance does not identify an optimal restart schedule or a method that guarantees a seamless transition. Decide how you will notice a stopped feed and restart it, and test that procedure before relying on it overnight.

Copyright checks for fan-noise streams
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If matched content continues in the stream, YouTube may replace it with a placeholder or interrupt or terminate the live broadcast. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to allowlist the channel. The creator is responsible for having the necessary rights for both live and archived content. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams and the YouTube Terms of Service.
Troubleshooting common problems
- You cannot start a live stream: Confirm the channel is verified, meets YouTube’s age requirement, has no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and has had time for first-time enablement.
- The encoder connects but Studio has no preview: Check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room. Keep the key private; reset it if compromised.
- Audio or video is unstable: Test the actual content, review stream health, and lower the selected quality if your connection cannot sustain it. YouTube advises choosing a quality that fits the available upload connection.
- The stream is interrupted after a copyright match: Review the content’s rights and any rights-holder allowlisting requirements. A license by itself may not prevent a live interruption.
- The stream stops during an overnight run: Check encoder and YouTube alerts, then use your tested restart procedure. YouTube’s under-12-hour archiving note is not a promise of continuous operation.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prepared video that should keep streaming to YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is an option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
