You can send a repeating devotional-video playlist to YouTube Live by running FFmpeg on a VPS: prepare media and a playlist, configure FFmpeg to encode for YouTube’s ingest requirements, then supervise the stream and plan for interruptions and archiving. Before scheduling it, confirm that your channel can go live and that you have the necessary worldwide rights to every recording. YouTube’s current guidance recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval; the exact FFmpeg playlist command and VPS suitability must be tested on your chosen server.

What you need before setting up the stream

  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access well before your planned start.
  • A VPS with sustained outbound capacity. It needs to run FFmpeg continuously, read your media and send the encoded stream to YouTube without exhausting its CPU, memory, disk or transfer allowance. The research for this guide did not verify a particular India-region VPS, provider, plan, egress terms or price; check those details with the host rather than assuming that a server’s location guarantees suitable performance.
  • Video and audio you are entitled to stream. Confirm that you hold the rights needed for the intended territories and use, including music rights. A devotional subject or a recording available online does not, by itself, grant permission to rebroadcast it.
  • A plan for continuity and replays. Decide whether a single uninterrupted broadcast or planned shorter sessions better fit the channel, and whether you need a separate recording for reliable archives.

YouTube’s Live Control Room provides the server URL and stream key for an encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to the stream. Do not put it in a public playlist, a shared document, screenshots or a command you intend to publish.

Prepare and validate the devotional playlist

Organize the media

Put the files on the VPS or make them available through storage the server can reliably read. Build a playlist in the order you want the videos to play. Keep filenames and paths consistent, and test that every listed file exists and is readable by the account that runs FFmpeg. A missing file or a format mismatch at a transition can interrupt the planned sequence.

Check rights and Content ID before going live

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the feed or a warning to stop using the content; continuing can lead to an interruption or termination. A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: the rights holder may also need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Confirm that any applicable allowlisting is in place before relying on licensed material for a continuous stream.

YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to hold necessary worldwide rights for live content on Google services, including relevant music rights. The applicable licenses depend on the recordings, rights holders and territories. This guide does not establish which licenses apply to a specific operator or recording in India; check with the rights holders and obtain advice appropriate to your situation.

Configure the VPS and FFmpeg workflow

  1. Choose and test the server. Check the VPS provider’s current terms for sustained outbound transfer, resource limits and the chosen India region. Run a trial with the intended media and output settings, then verify that the server can sustain the workload and bitrate. No India VPS provider or plan has been verified here.
  2. Install FFmpeg and identify its build. Use the package or installation method appropriate to your VPS operating system, then record the FFmpeg version and available encoders. Confirm that the build includes the video and audio encoders you intend to use, such as H.264 and AAC. Installation commands vary by distribution and repository, so do not copy an operating-system-specific command onto a different server.
  3. Create the playlist and test every transition. Make a playlist using paths that resolve on the VPS. Test a short run that reaches each file boundary; check for missing files, incompatible stream formats, gaps, unexpected silence or FFmpeg exits. The command pattern below is illustrative, not a tested deployment recipe.
  4. Create or select the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or choose the broadcast and copy its displayed server URL and stream key. Use the exact endpoint and key format shown for that stream.
  5. Start FFmpeg with an output profile matched to the media. Use the illustrative command below as a starting point only. Replace the playlist path and the two credential variables with values appropriate to your server; do not expose the stream key. The option combination and playlist looping behavior must be tested with your FFmpeg build and files before relying on it.
  6. Check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream health. Start the encoder, confirm that the preview has picture and sound, and watch stream health before completing any required go-live step in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement like the planned stream.
  7. Supervise the process and test recovery. Decide how you will detect a stopped FFmpeg process, missing input or network interruption and how you will restart it. Test recovery before announcing a 24/7 schedule; YouTube’s encoder guidance does not provide a tested FFmpeg process supervisor configuration.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/devotional/playlist.txt
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv
  "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

This is an example shape, not a command verified against your server, media or FFmpeg build. In particular, confirm that your playlist input loops as intended and that all files can be handled consistently. A VPS may need more CPU for encoding, and the required bitrate depends on the selected resolution and frame rate. If the media already has suitable streams, the right handling may differ; test rather than assuming this profile fits every playlist.

The example targets H.264 at 30 fps and a 4 Mbps video bitrate, with AAC audio at 128 kbps. YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264 and AAC, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. The example’s 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds only while output remains at 30 fps. If you change frame rate, adjust the GOP accordingly. Its rate-control options illustrate a fixed target; verify the actual output and current YouTube guidance before launch.

Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate

Match the output to the source material and to bandwidth and encoding capacity the VPS can sustain around the clock. Raising resolution or frame rate is not automatically an improvement if the source is lower quality or the server cannot reliably encode and upload it. The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s recommended bitrates, not measured requirements for a particular VPS.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

YouTube’s current encoder guidance also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Do not apply the maximum/minimum columns shown for those codecs as H.264 recommendations. Check YouTube’s current encoder-settings page at setup time because platform guidance can change.

  • Protocol: Prefer RTMPS, which YouTube recommends as an encrypted extension of RTMP.
  • Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends for the encoder output.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps stereo in its advanced settings.
  • Test the complete signal: Check moving picture and audio, stream health, playlist transitions and the actual incoming preview before depending on the stream.

Plan bandwidth and operating costs

VPS cost is not just the monthly server fee. Continuous video also consumes outbound transfer, and the usable allowance, overage charges and sustained-transfer rules depend on the provider and plan. No India-specific provider price or transfer allowance was established for this guide.

For a rough transfer estimate, multiply the average total output bitrate in megabits per second by 10.8 to estimate decimal gigabytes sent in a 24-hour day. For example, 4 Mbps of video alone is about 43.2 GB per day, before audio, protocol overhead and any bitrate variation. Use the total output bitrate for a better estimate, then compare expected monthly transfer with the provider’s actual terms.

Include the cost of a separate recording destination if retaining an independent archive matters. Recording locally on the VPS may add disk use and operational work; storing or transferring a copy elsewhere may add separate charges. Verify the option you choose rather than treating YouTube’s archive as a guaranteed backup.

Choose continuous streaming or planned sessions

Approach Benefit Trade-off
One continuous 24/7 broadcast Viewers can find a continuously running channel without waiting for the next scheduled session. YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable on very long streams.
Planned shorter sessions Sessions under 12 hours can be automatically archived by YouTube, subject to its current archive behavior. Sessions need deliberate scheduling and restarts, so the channel is not one uninterrupted broadcast.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It also warns that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. If day-by-day replay or a dependable devotional program archive matters, plan shorter segments or make an independent recording, then verify the result. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup.

Understand monetization limits

Being technically able to stream a repeating playlist does not mean YouTube will approve it for monetization. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible for monetization under that policy. Do not build a financial plan on an assumption that a looped devotional playlist will earn revenue.

Troubleshoot common failures

YouTube does not show an incoming preview

  • Check that the stream URL and key match the stream selected in Live Control Room, and that the key has not been changed or copied incorrectly.
  • Confirm that FFmpeg is still running and that its output has not failed. Review its logs for input, encoder and connection errors.
  • Check outbound connectivity and whether the VPS provider imposes transfer or network limits.

The stream starts but drops at a file boundary

  • Check that every playlist path exists and is readable to the FFmpeg process.
  • Test each adjacent pair of files. Differences in codecs, stream layouts or damaged media can cause problems when switching inputs.
  • Test looping and transitions with the exact installed FFmpeg build. The command example is not validated for every playlist format or media collection.

The picture stutters or stream health degrades

  • Compare the chosen bitrate with sustained VPS upload capacity, allowing room for audio and overhead.
  • Check CPU load and whether the selected encoder can keep up with the chosen resolution and frame rate.
  • Reduce output settings to a level the server and source material can sustain, then test again. Monitor YouTube stream health rather than relying only on the process reporting that it is running.

The live video is interrupted by a copyright match

  • Identify the matched recording and verify the relevant rights for the territories and use.
  • If you have a license, confirm with the rights holder whether your channel must be allowlisted through Content ID.
  • Do not assume that restarting FFmpeg resolves the underlying match; continuing to use the material can lead to further interruption.

The broadcast ends and no replay appears

  • Check the stream duration. YouTube says a broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
  • For future replays, use planned shorter sessions or keep an independent recording and verify that it is being saved successfully.
