To stream nature footage in 4K at 60 fps without HDR washout, start with a camera or source that genuinely outputs HDR in PQ or HLG, then match the encoder’s HDR format and color metadata to that source. In OBS, YouTube’s instructions call for hardware HEVC encoding, Main 10, HDR enabled, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. Set 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your ingest codec, and verify the result on an HDR-capable playback device—not just in Live Control Room, whose preview does not display HDR colors.

1. Confirm the footage is genuinely HDR

HDR is a complete source-to-playback path, not a label to add in an encoder. Check your camera or source documentation for actual PQ or HLG video output. A camera menu item described as “HDR” is not enough by itself: establish which transfer standard the footage uses, then configure the encoder to match it. YouTube’s live HDR guidance identifies cameras supporting PQ or HLG as the source requirement for non-gaming video (YouTube Help: Stream HDR video on YouTube).

  • If the source is SDR, stream it as SDR. Do not mark it HDR or invent HDR metadata; that cannot create genuine HDR and can lead to incorrect color.
  • If the source is PQ, use PQ throughout the encoder workflow. If it is HLG, use HLG. Do not mix the two unintentionally.
  • Confirm the source’s color primaries and matrix as well as its transfer function. YouTube’s documented HDR signaling uses BT.2020 primaries and a BT.2020 non-constant-luminance matrix with PQ or HLG transfer.

YouTube recommends HLG in its OBS instructions, but also allows Rec. 2100 PQ. Neither is universally preferable: the source’s actual output and the encoder’s supported mode determine the right choice.

2. Configure OBS for YouTube HDR

YouTube’s HDR instructions identify OBS version 30.1 or later for the documented workflow. Use a compatible hardware HEVC encoder and set the options to match the camera’s output. Menu names can vary by operating system, GPU, and OBS build, so check the encoder’s own options rather than selecting a similarly named setting that changes the signal.

  1. Update OBS: use version 30.1 or later for the workflow YouTube documents.
  2. Choose hardware HEVC encoding: select a compatible hardware encoder and HEVC/H.265 output. YouTube specifies HEVC for this HDR workflow.
  3. Set the profile and pixel format: use Main 10 and P010 (4:2:0), and enable the encoder’s HDR mode.
  4. Set the color space: choose Rec. 2100 PQ or Rec. 2100 HLG according to the source. Keep BT.2020 primaries and the BT.2020 non-constant-luminance matrix consistent with the source signal.
  5. Set the video frame size and rate: configure 3840 × 2160 output at 60 fps if that matches your source and intended stream.
  6. Use the route-specific YouTube setup: YouTube’s HDR instructions cover OBS setup for RTMPS and HLS, and specify additional HLS requirements for compatible hardware encoders. Follow the instructions for your selected route and encoder; do not assume every encoder supports both.

Do not compensate for a mismatch by forcing metadata. Incorrect HDR grading or metadata can produce an incorrect result, as YouTube’s HDR upload guidance explains (YouTube Help: Upload High Dynamic Range (HDR) videos).

3. Set 4K60 bitrate, keyframes, and latency

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends 35 Mbps for H.264 at 4K/2160p and 60 fps. For AV1 or H.265, the listed 4K60 range is 10–40 Mbps. Select a bitrate supported by both your ingest codec and your stable upload capacity; a connection that only reaches the target intermittently is not sufficient for a dependable live stream.

4. Test the stream and verify HDR in playback

Run a controlled test before the actual broadcast. Use footage with movement representative of the nature scene—such as leaves, flowing water, or moving clouds—and include the audio setup you plan to use. Check YouTube’s stream health and view the resulting playback on an HDR-capable screen or device.

  1. Create a private, unlisted, or otherwise controlled test stream.
  2. Send the stream using the same OBS encoder, ingest route, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and color settings planned for the broadcast.
  3. Review stream health in YouTube’s live tools and check that the stream holds steady during motion and audio playback.
  4. Open the stream on a device and display that support HDR. Check the playback quality menu for an HDR badge or option.
  5. Check a non-HDR device separately if relevant to your audience; viewers on unsupported devices receive SDR.

The Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors. It can help you monitor the live stream, but it cannot establish whether HDR looks correct to viewers. Judge appearance in actual playback on a supported HDR device, as described in YouTube’s HDR live-stream guidance.

5. Troubleshoot a washed-out or incorrect picture

First determine whether the viewer is receiving HDR or SDR. A viewer on an unsupported display may see SDR, and the Live Control Room preview is not an HDR color reference. If the picture still looks wrong in supported HDR playback, inspect the signal chain rather than changing metadata at random.

Symptom What to check Next step
Preview looks washed out, but HDR playback has not been checked The control-room preview does not display HDR colors. Test playback on an HDR-capable screen and check for the HDR option or badge.
HDR option is absent in playback Whether the source is genuine PQ or HLG HDR and whether the OBS encoder is configured for the same standard. Verify the camera’s supported output standard, OBS HDR mode, HEVC Main 10, P010, and Rec. 2100 setting.
Image looks wrong on an HDR-capable device Whether source and encoder agree on PQ versus HLG, and whether BT.2020 primaries and matrix match the signal. Correct the source-to-encoder mismatch. Do not label an SDR source as HDR or use metadata as a workaround.
Stream health is unstable or frames appear compromised Whether the connection can sustain the selected bitrate and whether encoder settings follow YouTube’s guidance. Test a bitrate your stable upload capacity can hold, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and monitor stream health during a controlled test.
Encoder setup options do not match the documented workflow OBS version, hardware encoder, and selected RTMPS or HLS route. Use OBS 30.1 or later and follow the route-specific instructions for the encoder in use; support for both protocols should not be assumed.

YouTube’s HDR upload page warns that incorrect grading or metadata can produce incorrect results, but it does not provide a complete live-specific fault tree. If the signal chain is correctly matched and the issue persists, isolate the source, encoder, ingest route, and playback device one at a time.

6. Copyright and YouTube Live checks

Technical HDR correctness does not grant rights to stream the footage or its audio. Before going live, confirm that you have the necessary rights or permission for the video, music, ambient recordings, and any other included material. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help you review the rights considerations; it does not replace permission from rights holders or YouTube’s rules.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your nature footage is a prepared recording rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service that keeps an uploaded video or playlist live around the clock: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it does not replace the need to prepare HDR footage correctly. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
