Yes—you can run a continuous YouTube Live stream from a NAS if the specific model can run an encoder such as FFmpeg and sustain the work. Store your rain or wind recording on the NAS, pair audio-only material with a visual, and send the resulting audio-video feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. A NAS is not automatically capable just because it supports containers: verify compatibility and test the complete setup before relying on it unattended.
How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works
The NAS holds your source files and, if capable, runs the encoder that loops them and sends a live feed to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. You can also keep the NAS as storage and use a separate always-on computer or streaming appliance to encode and send the feed.
For an audio-only recording, the encoder still needs to output video. Pair the sound with a still image or other visual that you own or are authorized to broadcast. A community project, FFmpeg-livestream-docker, illustrates the general pattern of looping media and sending it to YouTube, but it is not an official YouTube recipe or a verified configuration for your NAS.

Make sure the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming before your intended launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Confirm your exact NAS can encode continuously
- Check the NAS model, operating system and firmware, CPU architecture, memory, and whether a compatible encoder build is available.
- Confirm that the device can sustain the chosen encoding workload, not merely start a container. Test it with representative audio and video for a meaningful period before depending on it.
- Check how the NAS handles power loss, network interruption, encoder crashes, restarts, and logs. Plan how you will notice an interruption.
Container support alone does not establish that a NAS has enough sustained encoding capacity. For example, QNAP’s Container Station documentation describes deploying containers on supported QNAP devices and notes that requirements vary by platform, including processor architecture and memory. The guidance applies to the listed QNAP software and supported models—not all NAS devices.
Prepare the media and rights
- Put the audio, video, and any accompanying artwork in a stable folder on the NAS that the encoder can access.
- Choose a recording that can loop without an abrupt or distracting transition. Test the end-to-start transition and listen for gaps, clicks, or changes in volume.
- If the source is audio-only, provide a still image or other visual for the video track. Check that it stays present throughout the stream.
- Use recordings and visuals you own or have permission to broadcast. A looping ambient format by itself does not establish copyright clearance, reused-content treatment, monetization eligibility, or expected revenue. Check current YouTube policies and your account status; YouTube says live-stream monetization is available to channels in the YouTube Partner Program, but that does not guarantee that a particular stream qualifies or earns money.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream using YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Copy the server URL and stream key supplied for the stream into the encoder’s configuration.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not expose it in a public configuration, logs, screenshots, or source repository. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube Studio’s stream health before treating the broadcast as ready for viewers.
Configure and test the encoder
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance for the chosen resolution and connection. The platform recommends H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the interval should not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s general settings recommendations, not a separately tested optimum for a particular rain or wind stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS.

- Set a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and the available upload connection, using YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming the connection can sustain a chosen rate.
- Test with the actual media, resolution, and audio settings you intend to use. Listen for clean looping and inspect the visual for unexpected freezes.
- Watch stream health in YouTube Studio during a test. Check that the connection remains stable and that audio and video reach YouTube as expected.
- Do not regard a brief successful start as proof of reliable unattended operation. Test restart behavior and decide how you will detect a stalled or stopped encoder.
Keep the broadcast running and plan for interruptions
A 24/7 broadcast depends on the NAS, encoder, power, and upload connection remaining available. Configure only restart behavior supported by your NAS or container platform; monitor logs and YouTube stream status, and decide how you will respond to a power, network, or encoder interruption. These operational steps must be validated on your own hardware and software combination.

If you adapt a community container such as FFmpeg-livestream-docker, inspect its maintenance, image provenance, permissions, stream-key handling, and compatibility before use. Its existence does not establish that it is secure, maintained, or reliable for your device.
Will YouTube archive a 24/7 stream?
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous stream longer than that is outside the stated automatic-archive condition, so do not count on YouTube automatically saving a full 24/7 broadcast. If a replay matters, schedule shorter sessions or arrange a separate recording workflow. See YouTube’s encoder and archive guidance.

Choose where the encoder runs
| Approach | What to check | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Encode on the NAS | Model and software compatibility, sustained CPU capacity, memory, restart behavior, and the reliability of the NAS’s power and network connection. | Source files can stay on the NAS, but taking the NAS or its encoder offline interrupts the stream. |
| Encode on a separate always-on computer or streaming appliance | Whether an existing device is available, its power use, the connection to NAS-hosted media, restart behavior, and safe stream-key storage. | The NAS can remain storage, but the additional device and operating setup become part of the broadcast path. |
YouTube supports both encoder software and standalone encoder hardware as categories; this comparison does not assess specific products. For either setup, consider upload reliability, failure monitoring, key security, and whether you need a local replay.
