To run a continuous lofi hip-hop stream with FFmpeg, prepare audio files with matching streams, codecs, and time bases; list them in an FFmpeg concat script; then send a tested audio-and-visual output to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The concat demuxer plays files sequentially, but it does not make incompatible tracks compatible or, by itself, establish a reliable infinite loop. Clear livestream rights and Content ID allowlisting before launch, then test playlist repetition and recovery on your own FFmpeg build.

What you need before building the stream

  • A computer or server that can run FFmpeg continuously, a stable wired internet connection, and upload capacity for your chosen video bitrate.
  • A prepared collection of audio tracks and a visual: for example, a still image or a separately prepared video loop.
  • FFmpeg installed locally. Options and available encoders can vary by build, so check your installed version and test its behavior rather than assuming a command works identically everywhere.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, a stream key, and permission to use every track in a YouTube livestream and its archive, if you keep one.

This is configuration guidance, not a claim that one command has been tested for every FFmpeg version or operating system.

Check and prepare the tracks

The concat demuxer reads a text list and sequences files. It is intended for compatible inputs: the files must have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. A playlist does not convert audio formats or reconcile mismatched stream layouts. Inspect the files before making the list; if they differ, normalize them to a common format, sample rate, and channel layout, or use a workflow that re-encodes them. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation and the FFmpeg concat FAQ.

File durations affect timestamps: FFmpeg uses each file’s duration to place the next file. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts, and differing audio and video stream lengths can create gaps. If FFmpeg cannot infer a duration accurately, the concat script supports a duration directive; use it only with a known correct duration.

Keep audio and visuals on deliberate schedules

If you are using an audio playlist with a still image or a separate visual loop, do not assume that the concat list joins those independent schedules. Set up the visual as its own FFmpeg input and ensure the overall output continues for as long as the audio playlist. Validate transitions and audio/video continuity in a short test.

Write the concat playlist

Put the script and tracks in a predictable working directory. A minimal script named playlist.ffconcat can look like this:

FFmpeg’s concat safe-path checking defaults to enabled. It rejects paths that are not relative and portable, so keep the files in a suitable relative-path layout or make a deliberate safe-path choice for a playlist you control. Do not relax path safety for untrusted playlist files. The syntax and option details are in the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Use duration directives cautiously

Add a duration line only when you know the accurate duration for that file. Because durations determine where later timestamps start, an incorrect value can create timing artifacts rather than fixing them.

Choose the right concatenation method

Use the concat demuxer when inputs already meet its compatibility requirements and you want sequential concatenation without re-encoding. If you need to normalize or re-encode disparate inputs, consider the concat filter instead. These approaches are not interchangeable: the right choice depends on the media and whether re-encoding is part of the workflow. FFmpeg explains the distinction in its concat FAQ.

Configure YouTube Live output

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS ingest and constant bitrate (CBR) video. It accepts AAC or MP3 audio and recommends stereo audio at 128 kbps. Set keyframes every two seconds where possible; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.

Setting YouTube guidance
Ingest RTMPS recommended
Video rate control CBR recommended
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds
Audio codec AAC or MP3 accepted
Stereo audio bitrate 128 kbps recommended

Choose a video mode and bitrate that suit the visual, your encoder capacity, and your actual upload connection. YouTube automatically transcodes live streams into other viewer formats, but that does not remove the need for a stable, correctly configured feed. Exact encoder names and command-line options depend on your FFmpeg build, so use its local help and test settings rather than treating a generic command as universally valid.

Validate the stream and playlist loop

  1. Create a private or unlisted test event. Use the same representative tracks, visual, output settings, and connection you intend to use for the public stream.
  2. Measure upload capacity. YouTube recommends checking the upload bitrate with a speed test and leaving enough capacity for a stable stream.
  3. Watch and listen through transitions. Check for gaps, abrupt cuts, silence, timestamp artifacts, and visual discontinuities, including the boundary between the final and first playlist items.
  4. Confirm repetition on your installed FFmpeg version. The concat demuxer documentation describes sequential files and timestamp behavior; it does not establish a universal directive that repeats the entire playlist indefinitely. Verify loop option order and semantics for your build, and confirm that the list restarts without a gap or timestamp problem.
  5. Monitor YouTube stream health. Check for warnings during the test and after launch. Testing and monitoring reduce avoidable setup errors; they cannot guarantee that a long-running stream will never disconnect.

Playlist repetition and process recovery are separate concerns. Decide how the FFmpeg process will be supervised and restarted after a process failure or network interruption, and test that recovery. The official guidance cited here does not promise continuous uptime or prescribe one supervisor for every setup.

Clear music rights and Content ID before launch

Use tracks only when your rights cover the intended YouTube livestream and any replay or archive. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can trigger a placeholder and warning, and continued use can lead to temporary interruption or termination. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says, “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the content.” Ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist before going live, and retain written evidence of the license scope and permissions. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Common problems and fixes

  • FFmpeg rejects a track or concatenation fails: Check that every input has matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Normalize mismatched files or switch to a re-encoding workflow such as the concat filter.
  • Clicks, gaps, or timestamp artifacts at track boundaries: Check that durations are accurate and compare stream lengths. Normalize the media and use a duration directive only when you know the exact value.
  • The playlist fails to open paths: Check quoting and escaping, use a relative portable path layout, and review the default safe-path restriction. Do not disable safety checks for untrusted lists.
  • The stream stops after the last track: Do not assume the concat demuxer repeats the playlist. Verify your installed version’s looping option behavior and test the end-to-start transition.
  • YouTube reports stream-health warnings or the feed disconnects: Check upload capacity, output settings, connection stability, and process supervision; inspect FFmpeg and YouTube warnings to identify the failing layer.
  • The stream is interrupted despite a music license: Confirm that the license explicitly covers live use and the archive, if applicable, and ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel in Content ID.
