You can use a Raspberry Pi as the host for an encoder that sends a continuous music-and-visual stream to YouTube. The essential steps are to clear the music for this exact use, check your channel’s live-stream eligibility, configure an encoder and stream key, then test and monitor the broadcast. One important limit: Chillhop Music’s official Creators FAQ says, “Please do not use our music to create your own 24/7 music stream.” Use music whose written license explicitly covers a creator-operated, continuous YouTube livestream instead.

Before you start: clear the music rights

Streaming a genre is not the same as having permission to use a particular catalog. Chillhop Music’s official Creators FAQ specifically says, “Please do not use our music to create your own 24/7 music stream.” Joining its Creators program does not make this format permissible. Its terms also limit the approved uses of designated Programme Content and exclude standalone audio and material paired only with a still image, visualizer, or track or artist name.

For another catalog, get written permission for the actual plan—not just a general statement that a track is “royalty-free” or available for creators. Confirm each of these points with the rights holder:

  • The license covers continuous, creator-operated YouTube livestreaming, not just videos or personal listening.
  • It covers the specific tracks you intend to play, your channel, and the countries where the stream will be available.
  • It allows monetization if you plan to monetize the stream.
  • It covers an archived livestream or video-on-demand (VOD) if you plan to keep a replay.
  • It states what credits are required, how long the license lasts, and what happens if it ends.
  • If the music is managed through Content ID, the rights holder will allowlist your channel before you go live.

YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. A match can result in a warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination. YouTube advises creators using licensed material to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist; having a license alone does not guarantee that YouTube will leave the stream uninterrupted. Archived livestreams may receive claims after the broadcast, so decide whether to archive only after checking that your license covers VODs.

What you need for the Raspberry Pi setup

The Pi’s job is to run an encoder that combines digital audio from your chosen music source with a video image and sends the resulting stream to YouTube. A static or low-motion visual keeps the video component simple, but the board still has to handle the chosen encoding workload continuously. No specific Pi model or 24/7 uptime result is established here, so choose hardware only after checking that it can sustain your intended encoder settings.

  • A Raspberry Pi running a current operating system and an encoder you can configure for YouTube’s ingest requirements.
  • A reliable power supply, storage for the operating system and any locally stored media, and a stable network connection. A wired connection may be preferable where available, but the actual connection must be tested at the location.
  • Music files or another source you have permission to stream continuously.
  • A visual to accompany the audio, such as a static scene or a simple low-motion image.
  • A YouTube stream key, which must be treated as a private credential.

An audio HAT is optional for file-based digital audio: the encoder can send that audio without routing it through a physical audio output. Raspberry Pi’s documentation covers audio HAT selection and terminal configuration for headless Raspberry Pi OS Lite, which is useful if you need physical audio input or output. Do not buy an audio HAT merely because the stream contains music.

Check whether your YouTube channel can go live

YouTube’s eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel before preparing the Pi; resolving an eligibility issue after configuring the encoder does not get the broadcast online sooner.

  1. Open YouTube Studio for the channel you intend to use and check whether live streaming is enabled.
  2. If the channel is not verified or YouTube displays an eligibility restriction, resolve that through YouTube before proceeding.
  3. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or configure the broadcast. Use the ingest details and stream key shown for that stream.

Configure the encoder for YouTube

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, its advanced settings specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.

Video setting YouTube-recommended ingest bitrate What to keep in mind
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps A YouTube recommendation, not a measured Raspberry Pi capability or a guarantee of a stable stream.
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps A YouTube recommendation, not a measured Raspberry Pi capability or a guarantee of a stable stream.
480p at 30 fps 4 Mbps A YouTube recommendation, not a measured Raspberry Pi capability or a guarantee of a stable stream.

For a music stream with a static visual, start with a resolution and bitrate the selected Pi and internet connection can sustain. The table’s figures come from YouTube’s encoder guidance; they are not Pi benchmarks. The upload connection needs enough headroom for the selected bitrate. YouTube advises running a speed test, but a single speed result does not prove that an around-the-clock stream will remain stable.

The encoder interface differs by software and operating-system version. Enter the YouTube server or ingest address and private stream key in that encoder, then set the protocol, video codec, audio codec, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings above. Do not copy old Raspberry Pi streaming commands or package instructions from an older guide without verifying them against the current operating system and encoder documentation. The older Adafruit Pi-to-YouTube example is useful as an illustration of the architecture, not as a current command recipe.

Bring the stream online and test it

  1. Prepare the media. Assemble the licensed tracks or playlist and the visual that the encoder will pair with them. Confirm that the license covers this continuous broadcast and any replay you intend to retain.
  2. Start the encoder with the YouTube ingest details. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel’s live ingest.
  3. Check the Live Control Room. Wait for YouTube to receive the encoder signal and review the stream-health indicator before making the broadcast public.
  4. Run a representative test. Test with the actual music source, visual, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you intend to use. Watch and listen to the preview and monitor stream health rather than assuming that a successful connection is enough.
  5. Start the public broadcast only after the test is clean. If you plan to archive it, verify VOD rights first and choose the archive setting accordingly.

YouTube recommends testing with representative sound and motion and monitoring stream health. A brief successful test can reveal setup errors, but it cannot establish long-term uptime for a particular Pi, power supply, storage device, or network connection.

Keep a Pi stream running and recover it safely

A Pi-based setup depends on the board, its power and storage, the encoder process, and the internet connection all continuing to work. The material available here does not establish a particular configuration’s uptime or recovery behavior. Plan to check the broadcast after launch and to identify how you will regain access to the Pi and restart the encoder if the process or connection fails.

  • Keep your stream key confidential. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder with the new key.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to inspect Next step
YouTube does not receive a signal Ingest address, stream key, encoder connection, or channel live eligibility. Check the current ingest details in YouTube Studio, confirm the correct key is in the encoder, and verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel.
The stream connects but health is poor or playback stutters Upload capacity, bitrate, network stability, or Pi encoding load. Run YouTube’s suggested speed test, reduce the resolution or bitrate if needed, and test again using the actual stream settings.
The picture works but there is no sound Encoder audio source, codec, or audio configuration. Confirm the intended digital audio source is selected and that AAC or MP3 is configured. For stereo, YouTube’s advanced guidance specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
YouTube warns, replaces, or interrupts the stream over music Content ID match or rights that do not cover this use. Stop using the disputed material until the rights holder confirms the license and, where relevant, allowlists the channel. A license does not by itself prevent an interruption.
The livestream works but the replay receives a claim The license may not cover archived VODs. Check the VOD terms with the rights holder before enabling or retaining archives.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube music stream without keeping a Pi or another computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos and playlists. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera, and it does not clear music rights. You still need permission for continuous YouTube streaming and any VOD use, and must address Content ID requirements with the rights holder.
