You can stream a prerecorded 1080p video as a YouTube Live broadcast from a low-cost server with FFmpeg, provided the server can sustain the upload bitrate and has enough monthly data transfer. If the file is already compatible with YouTube, FFmpeg may be able to send it without re-encoding, which keeps CPU needs modest. The core workflow is to enable YouTube Live, create an event, copy its private stream key, inspect the file, then pace and send it to YouTube over RTMPS.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the scheduled broadcast. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- A prerecorded video file on the server, or a reliable way to transfer it there.
- A server with enough sustained outbound capacity, storage, and monthly transfer for the stream. A specific hosting plan cannot be recommended without current provider specifications and pricing.
- FFmpeg installed on the server and a way to keep the process supervised if you need it to restart after a failure.
Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio and use the event’s encoder settings. Copy the server URL and stream key privately; anyone with access to the key may be able to broadcast to your event. Do not place it in public scripts, screenshots, shared commands, or logs.
Choose a 1080p output that matches the video
Inspect the source file’s dimensions, frame rate, video codec, audio codec, and timestamps before choosing an output. For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance retrieved in 2026 recommends the following bitrate ranges; its guidance also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. YouTube encoder settings and bitrates

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; maximum 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; maximum 4 seconds |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every source file or server will work at every value. Select an output frame rate that the source supports; converting frame rate or scaling a video requires decoding and encoding rather than simple packet copying. For audio and other codec-specific settings, follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your intended format.

Can FFmpeg send the file without re-encoding?
When a file already contains compatible video and audio streams, FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode (-c copy) can pass encoded packets without decoding or re-encoding them. That can reduce server CPU requirements substantially. It is not a universal compatibility fix: the source codecs, container, timestamps, and YouTube ingest compatibility all matter. If the file needs a different codec, resolution, or frame rate, plan for additional CPU or suitable hardware encoding capacity. FFmpeg documentation
Send the prerecorded video to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming and create the event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and open its encoder settings. First-time channel activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup guidance. YouTube encoder setup
- Copy the ingest details privately. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube’s API distinguishes the broadcast event from the media stream and provides the ingest address and stream name through its live-stream resources. LiveStreams API reference Broadcasts and streams implementation
- Inspect the file and decide whether to copy or encode. Confirm its codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and audio. Use stream copy only if the existing streams and container work with the selected ingest format; otherwise configure an appropriate encode and budget for the extra server load.
- Run FFmpeg with real-time pacing. For file input,
-rereads at the input’s native frame rate so FFmpeg sends packets at a live-like pace. FFmpeg cautions against using this option with actual capture devices or live inputs. FFmpeg documentation - Use the current event’s RTMPS address. RTMPS encrypts ingest; Google’s guidance describes TLS over port 443 and requires the correct hostname/SNI for clients. Use the exact address and key provided by YouTube rather than assuming a fixed endpoint format. Google’s RTMPS guide
- Check stream health before and during the broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed, review Live Control Room health messages, and test both motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder settings and testing
- Stop the encoder when the event is over. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that an uninterrupted event can run indefinitely. YouTube live-stream setup guidance
Illustrative FFmpeg command
This is a template, not a tested command for every source file or ingest endpoint. Replace the input and destination with your own values. Confirm that stream copy is suitable and use the exact RTMPS URL format shown in YouTube Studio; keep the key private.

Estimate bandwidth and server cost
Plan for continuous outbound traffic as well as compute. A rough transfer estimate is bitrate in bits per second multiplied by runtime in seconds, divided by eight, with additional overhead for the protocol. At 10 Mbps, that works out to about 1.25 MB/s or 4.5 GB per hour before overhead. This is arithmetic from the bitrate, not a provider quote or a guaranteed transfer total.
For a low-cost server, compare the actual offer against the demands of the whole event rather than the headline CPU price:

- Sustained outbound bitrate and network port capacity—not merely a burst speed.
- Included monthly transfer and charges for overage, calculated for your planned streaming hours.
- CPU or GPU capacity if you must transcode, scale, or change frame rate; compatible stream copy may avoid that need.
- Storage for the video file and any working files.
- Network region and route quality to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- Restart supervision and recovery options if FFmpeg exits or the server reboots.
No particular server provider, current plan price, egress allowance, or performance was established here. Check the provider’s current terms and test the route and sustained upload from the server before relying on it for an event.
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: check that live streaming is enabled, the correct event is open, and the RTMPS URL and key match that event. Look for shell quoting mistakes or an expired/replaced key.
- The connection fails over RTMPS: verify that the client supports the endpoint’s TLS connection on port 443 and uses the correct hostname/SNI. Google’s RTMPS guidance explains these connection requirements. RTMPS ingestion guidance
- The picture or audio is rejected or missing: inspect the source codecs and container, then compare them with YouTube’s current encoder settings. Stream copy preserves the existing encoded streams; it does not convert incompatible media.
- The stream buffers or drops: check sustained server upload capacity, route quality, and transfer/network limits. A nominal bitrate recommendation is not evidence that a particular server can maintain that rate.
- Video timing or motion looks wrong: verify source timestamps and frame rate. If conversion is necessary, encode deliberately and ensure the server can sustain the workload.
- The process stops unexpectedly: inspect FFmpeg output and server logs without exposing the stream key, then configure process supervision or restart handling appropriate to the server. Test recovery before scheduling a public event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without maintaining a server process, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It does not stream from a camera.
Quick Recap
- One flat price per slot for the uploaded quality, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encoding or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; one free day per account.
- Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
