Store the captured bytes in immutable WARC files held in durable file or object storage, and use your database as the catalog. Keep searchable metadata, relationships, digests, offsets, versions, retention state, and replay information in SQL; keep the original HTTP resources in WARC. This preserves provenance and replayability without turning large, immutable payloads into transactional rows.
Use a WARC-and-database architecture
A web capture is more than a screenshot. A replayable archive may include the HTML response, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, media, request and response headers, redirects, and metadata that explains how the resource was collected. The Web ARChive (WARC) format is designed to concatenate resource records containing headers and arbitrary data blocks. It also supports metadata, duplicate-detection events, transformations, and segmented resources.
The practical split is:
- WARC files: the preservation copy: original request and response information and captured resource bytes.
- File or object storage: durable storage for WARC files, with replication, backups, and fixity verification.
- Database: cataloging, search indexes, relationships, versions, workflow state, retention, access rules, and the location of each WARC record.
WARC was standardized as ISO 28500:2009. The Library of Congress states that it and other web-archiving organizations preserve web content in WARC format. The U.S. National Archives (NARA) identifies WARC 1.0 as a preferred transfer format and says a static screenshot is not an adequate substitute because it does not retain hypertext functionality.
Why not put the capture directly in SQL?
Binary large objects in a relational table can work for a small prototype, but they make transactional backups, replication, table maintenance, and restores handle every immutable byte. Separating payload from catalog lets you use object-storage lifecycle and integrity controls while keeping metadata queries fast. The database still records exactly where a payload lives and how to verify it.

Logical schema for a web-capture archive
Use stable identifiers and UTC timestamps throughout the model. The following entities cover the catalog, provenance, replay, and policy information normally needed for an archive.

Keep the WARC object key and record offset together. A replay service can locate the exact byte range without scanning every file. Store both the digest supplied by the capture process and the algorithm name; never assume a digest is meaningful without its algorithm.

This PostgreSQL-style definition is a starting point, not a complete preservation system. Add foreign keys, indexes, access controls, and migrations appropriate to your database.

Capture, catalog, and replay workflow
- Define scope and permissions. Record the collection, permitted domains or paths, crawl frequency, robots or legal requirements, and any resources that cannot be collected.
- Capture the page and permitted dependencies. Retain request and response information, redirects, headers, and linked resources needed for replay. A page-only HTML file is not equivalent to a dependency-complete capture.
- Write immutable WARC records. Create records for the responses and metadata generated by the capture. Record the WARC record identifier, type, target URI, date, and payload location.
- Calculate fixity data. Hash each payload and persist the digest and algorithm in the WARC metadata and the database catalog. A later verification must be able to detect changed or truncated bytes.
- Persist the WARC object. Place it in durable file or object storage with replication and backups. Do not mark a database row complete until the object and its catalog location have been durably written.
- Commit catalog state. Insert or update
capture,warc_record, relationships, version information, and preservation events in one job. If the database write fails, leave the capture in a retryable state rather than presenting an unfindable object as complete. - Index discovery data. Extract title, language, subjects, links, and text for search, but treat extracted data as an index. The original WARC bytes remain the preservation copy.
- Replay and label the result. Use a WARC-aware viewer. Display the archive institution, capture date and time, and any known functionality differences from the live site.
- Run recurring controls. Schedule integrity checks, duplicate detection, backup verification, restore tests, and preservation-event logging. Track changes between snapshots and review retention or legal holds.
Versions, duplicates, and relationships
Versioning a canonical page
Assign a canonical page identifier after URL normalization rules are defined for your collection. Give each observed state a version number, first-seen and last-seen timestamps, a change digest, and a link to the version it supersedes. Keep the original target URI in every WARC record even when several URIs map to one canonical page.
Deduplicating safely
Use payload digests to detect identical resources, then create a duplicate_event that points to the reused record. Deduplication should not erase provenance: retain when and how the duplicate was detected and which capture referred to it. Two resources with equal bytes can still have different request context, headers, or access restrictions.

Modeling dependencies
The resource_relation table lets replay and audit tools distinguish HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, and media. Store the source link or referring record so an operator can explain why a resource belongs to a capture and identify missing dependencies.
Replay fidelity and known limits
Replay depends on preserving many dependencies, not merely the visible page. Multimedia-heavy pages, streaming media, deep-web content, and database-backed applications may not be fully preservable with an ordinary crawl. Dynamic content may need conversion to readable HTML or manual capture. Treat each limitation as an explicit exception linked to the capture, with a description of what was unavailable and how replay differs from the live site.

Choosing an implementation

Evaluate each design against preservation fidelity and replayability, query speed and metadata richness, storage cost and deduplication, fixity and restore controls, legal or access restrictions, and operational complexity at your expected capture volume. No authoritative source establishes a universal storage-size, cost, or performance benchmark for these choices, so measure your own workload.
Retention, access, and audit controls
- Retention: assign a retention class, review date, disposition status, policy reference, and legal-hold flag. A deletion job must check legal holds before removing either catalog rows or WARC objects.
- Rights and restrictions: store rights statements and access restrictions in metadata, and enforce them in the replay layer rather than relying on an operator note.
- Auditability: record operator actions, transformations, duplicate decisions, integrity checks, restores, and disposition events as preservation events.
- Backups: test restoration of both the WARC object and the corresponding catalog, including offsets and digests. A backup that restores bytes but not their catalog relationships is incomplete.

Should every screenshot have its own database row?
Give each capture event a catalog row, then link any derived screenshot, PDF, or thumbnail as an output of that event. Keep the authoritative preservation payload and its provenance distinct from presentation derivatives.

Create an exception linked to the capture, identify the unavailable resource or behavior, state whether a conversion or manual capture was used, and show that qualification in the replay interface.
What must a restore test prove?
It should recover the WARC object, its catalog rows, record offsets, relationships, digests, and access metadata well enough to locate and verify a replayable record.
Can a visual API replace a web archive?
A screenshot or PDF records appearance, but it does not retain the hypertext functionality and HTTP-level context that WARC is intended to preserve. Use visual captures as derivatives or previews when full replay is not required.
