To protect Pokémon cards, handle them gently, put them in a properly sized sleeve and holder or binder page, and store them in a cool, dry, stable place away from direct light. Keep sealed boxes and packs out of damp or hot spots, and use an outer case only if it does not squeeze or deform the packaging. These are practical applications of general paper-conservation guidance, not Pokémon-specific preservation standards.
Choose storage based on how you use each card
A binder makes cards easy to browse; an individual rigid or semi-rigid holder gives a card separate support. Choose according to how often you handle the card, whether you want it visible, and its dimensions and thickness. Neither option guarantees protection from every type of damage.

BCW describes its side-loading standard-card pages as 115-micron polypropylene that is acid-free and PVC-free. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of zero risk. Ultra PRO likewise identifies its pages as non-PVC polypropylene and warns that overfilling pages or forcing thick cards into standard nine-pocket pages can damage cards. - Handle the card gently. Avoid bending it while placing it into a sleeve or holder.
- Check the fit. Use a sleeve and holder made for the card’s size and thickness; do not force a thick card into a tight pocket.
- Choose the storage format. Place cards you want to browse in suitable binder pages. For individual support, a semi-rigid holder is another option.
Ultra PRO describes its CardPreserver as a standard-size polypropylene holder with a soft-loading front, semi-rigid back support and resealable flap; the manufacturer also calls it acid-free and PVC-free. Store cards in a stable environment
Keep cards in a cool, dry, clean place with stable conditions, away from direct or intense light, leaks and environmental extremes. The Library of Congress offers general guidance for works on paper: “cool (room temperature or below), relatively dry (about 35% relative humidity), clean, and stable,” with minimal light exposure. That example is not a Pokémon-specific target. Read the Library of Congress paper-care guidance.
Humidity figures from preservation authorities refer to different contexts and should not be combined into a universal home-storage range. The Library of Congress gives about 35% relative humidity as an example for paper. The National Archives advises keeping relative humidity below 65% to limit mold growth and insect activity in family archives; its page is dated 2016. Neither figure establishes an official Pokémon-card requirement. Read the National Archives family-archive guidance.

Protect sealed boxes and packs from pressure and exposure
Store sealed products away from direct or intense light, leaks and environmental extremes. Keep them where other objects will not crush or deform the packaging. An outer case or box may help limit handling and exposure, but choose one that fits without squeezing the item. The preservation guidance supports stable conditions and protective enclosures generally; it does not test specific Pokémon-product cases or establish that airtight storage or desiccants are necessary for every collection.
Keep tournament sleeve rules in their proper context
Pokémon Organized Play rules concern tournament play, not long-term storage. The 2023 Play! Pokémon Tournament Rules Handbook says sleeves must enclose a single card in its entirety and strongly recommends opaque-backed sleeves. It explains that scratches, tears, discoloration and bends can make a card marked for tournament purposes. These rules are not an archival certification or a storage standard.
