Store dry, shelf-stable peanut butter snacks in a cool, dry cupboard, and reseal the original wrapper or bag after opening. Refrigerate them only when the package or recipe says to, or when perishable ingredients make refrigeration necessary. Because bars, crackers, cookies, and homemade snacks differ, follow the directions for the specific product rather than relying on one shelf-life estimate for all peanut butter snacks.
Choose storage based on the snack
Start with the package or recipe. A sealed commercial bar or cracker may be shelf-stable, while a homemade snack or a product made with ingredients that need refrigeration may require different care. There is no single established household storage time that applies to every peanut butter snack.
- Packaged dry snacks: Follow the label, and keep them in a cool, dry cupboard unless the package gives different directions.
- Homemade snacks or perishable preparations: Follow the recipe’s storage instructions. Refrigerate if the recipe or the ingredients require it.
- Peanut butter in a jar: Use the guidance for peanut butter itself, not as a shelf-life estimate for a bar, cracker, or cookie.
USDA describes certain dry goods, including dried mixes, rice, cereal, and pasta sold in airtight bags or boxes, as not harboring harmful bacteria, though they may mold if exposed to dampness. That statement is about the listed dry goods; it is not a safety guarantee for every kind of peanut butter snack. USDA FSIS explains how to store dry goods.

Close the original wrapper or bag securely after opening, and store it away from damp areas and heat sources. If the packaging will not reseal, transfer the snack to a clean, dry plastic or glass food storage container. An airtight snack container is an optional way to limit exposure to moisture and air; USDA recommends plastic or glass containers as added protection for dry goods, but does not give a measured shelf-life extension for using one.

When refrigeration is appropriate
Dry, shelf-stable snacks do not automatically need refrigeration. Refrigerate when the package or recipe instructs you to, or when a perishable ingredient or preparation calls for it. For peanut butter itself, storage guidance can differ by product: follow the jar label, particularly for natural peanut butter. A professional nutrition source notes that pantry or refrigerator storage can work for peanut butter and recommends refrigeration for natural nut butters.
Refrigeration is not a substitute for the product’s storage directions. For a dry snack, use the label’s instructions; for a homemade or perishable snack, use its recipe-specific guidance.

How long does peanut butter itself last?
USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance says peanut butter can be kept in the pantry for six to nine months unopened and two to three months after opening. These periods apply to peanut butter itself, not to composite snacks such as peanut butter bars, crackers, or cookies. USDA FSIS provides its peanut butter shelf-life guidance.
A USDA procurement specification for certain packaged granola and nut bars requires six to eight months of remaining shelf life at ambient conditions when delivered. That is a purchasing requirement for specified deliveries—not household storage advice or a guarantee for an opened consumer package.

How to use date labels and check for changes
Date labels commonly indicate quality rather than establish a universal safety outcome. FDA supports “Best if Used By” as wording for when a product is expected to have its best flavor and quality. Check the package directions, and look for noticeable changes in color, consistency, or texture. USDA FSIS also identifies off odors, flavors, or textures as spoilage characteristics. Do not taste a snack that shows signs of spoilage; contact the manufacturer if you have a product-specific concern.
