For videos you own or have permission to archive, export the files through YouTube Studio or Google Takeout, copy them to an external hard drive, and keep a second copy on separate storage. Choose capacity from the size of your actual files and expected growth—not from a universal “right” drive size. YouTube Premium offline downloads are for viewing inside YouTube, not a portable file archive.
First, decide what belongs in your archive
A hard drive can store video files you have obtained legitimately; it does not make every YouTube video downloadable or grant permission to keep or reuse it. This workflow is best for your own channel uploads and videos whose rights holders have authorized you to retain them. If you mean a watch-later collection of other people’s public videos, use YouTube’s saved-video features rather than treating those videos as files you can freely export.
YouTube’s UK Terms of Service say, “You may access and use the Service as made available to you, as long as you comply with this Agreement and the law.” The terms cited here are for the UK; applicable rules and terms can differ by location and may change. Download or reuse content only where the service, the relevant rights holders, or applicable law permits it.

Download an individual upload in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to the YouTube account that uploaded the video and open YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, select Content.
- Find the video, open its options menu, and select Download if that option is available.
- Save the downloaded file to a temporary folder on your computer, then copy it to the external drive after connecting and checking the drive.
YouTube’s creator download tool provides MP4 files at 720p or 360p, depending on video size. YouTube lists circumstances in which a download may be unavailable, including a removed video, certain strikes, or preapproved audio. It also limits downloads to five per video in a 24-hour period. If the Studio option is missing, use Google Takeout for your uploaded videos or check YouTube’s current help guidance; do not try to bypass a restriction.

Export all uploaded videos with Google Takeout
- Open Google Takeout while signed in to the account that owns the channel.
- Select YouTube and YouTube Music data, then use the available data-selection controls to include the uploaded videos you want.
- Choose the export format and delivery method offered by Takeout, then create the export.
- When the export is ready, download and extract it on a computer with enough free working space.
- Copy the extracted video files to your external drive. Keep the export temporarily until you have checked that the copied files open.
Takeout is a route for exporting your account’s uploaded videos; it is not a way to download any public video on YouTube. Export interfaces can change, so follow the current labels shown in your Google account.
Why Premium offline downloads are different
YouTube Premium offline viewing keeps downloads within YouTube while you are signed in. Offline availability may require reconnecting and syncing, and a video that is no longer available may be removed on the next sync. YouTube’s offline-download help does not describe these as ordinary portable video files you can move to an external hard drive. Use Premium for offline playback in YouTube, not as the file-export step in a permanent archive.

Work out how much drive capacity you need
- Total the files you already plan to keep. Check the actual sizes of exported video files on your computer. If you are exporting a large library, allow room on the computer for the export and extraction process as well as on the destination drive.
- Estimate additions. Use your own upload or acquisition history to estimate how much new video you expect to archive over the period you want the drive to serve.
- Leave working headroom. Do not plan to fill every byte. Operating systems may show less usable capacity than the drive’s advertised capacity, and file-system and computer conventions affect what appears available.
- Choose capacity above the combined total. Recheck free space as the library grows rather than assuming today’s size will remain sufficient.
Western Digital’s 2025 G-DRIVE datasheet lists 18TB, 22TB, 24TB, and 26TB configurations in its specifications, with 22TB and 24TB also called out in the product overview. For the specified 22TB and 24TB configurations, WD claims read and write speeds of up to 280MB/s, based on its internal testing and subject to host and usage conditions. WD notes that actual usable capacity may be lower and specifications can change. These are manufacturer specifications, not an independent comparison or a universal recommendation; confirm the exact model, computer compatibility, and current availability before buying.
Set up a durable folder and index
Use a folder structure that will still make sense when you have forgotten the export date. For example:

Video Archive/Channel or Subject/2026/- Use filenames that preserve the video title plus its upload date or another identifier.
- Keep a small spreadsheet or index with the title, original YouTube URL, channel, date, file path, and any relevant rights or permission notes.
These fields are a practical organization method, not a YouTube requirement. A catalog makes it easier to find a file and remember what it is and why it is in your archive.
Make a second copy and check it
An external drive holding the only copy is a single point of failure: it can fail, be lost, or be damaged. Copy important files to a second, separate drive or other independent storage. Do not count RAID alone as a backup; fault tolerance and a separate recoverable copy address different risks.

- After the first copy finishes, open a selection of files from the destination drive and confirm they play.
- Make the second copy on separate storage rather than relying on another partition on the same physical drive.
- Periodically compare the copies and test that files still open. For a large archive, a file-checking or checksum tool can help detect changes, but the important practice is to verify rather than assume.
- Plan to refresh aging storage. An archival guide recommends anticipating media replacement around 3–5 years; treat that as its planning guidance, not a guaranteed drive lifespan or a universal failure schedule.
External drive or NAS?

Before buying either, check the computer’s ports, operating system, and the exact drive’s supported file system. Storage technology and product specifications do not by themselves establish current stock, price, or compatibility with your particular setup.
Troubleshooting common archive problems
The YouTube Studio download option is missing
Check that you are signed into the account that uploaded the video and that the video is eligible for download. YouTube identifies removed videos, certain strikes, and preapproved audio among cases where downloads can be unavailable. For your own uploads, try Google Takeout; if YouTube blocks the export, do not use a workaround to defeat the restriction.

The file is smaller or lower resolution than expected
The creator download tool’s MP4 output is listed as 720p or 360p depending on video size. It should not be assumed to reproduce the original source file at its original quality. If you still have the original recording, preserve that file separately when retaining it is permitted.
The drive shows less free space than its label suggests
Advertised capacity and the usable amount reported by a computer are not always identical. Check the drive’s properties and the manufacturer’s capacity qualification, then base your remaining-space plan on the value shown by your operating system.
A copied video will not play
Test the file from the computer before copying it again. Confirm the transfer completed, that the file size is plausible, and that your player supports the file format. If the export was extracted from an archive, make sure you copied the actual video file rather than only the compressed download package.
The archive is filling faster than expected
Review actual file sizes and additions over time, then revise your capacity plan. Move the library to a larger primary drive only after creating and checking another copy; do not erase the old copy as soon as a transfer appears to finish.
