You can’t switch off YouTube’s recommendations entirely, but you can reduce how much they decide what you watch. The practical approach has two parts: change the signals YouTube uses to suggest videos, and choose more deliberate routes into videos, such as search, your subscriptions, and Explore. This guide explains which controls YouTube documents, what each one changes, and what you give up in return, based on YouTube’s Help pages as checked in October 2026.
What YouTube says drives its recommendations
YouTube’s Help article “How YouTube recommendations work” lists clicks, watch time, survey responses, sharing, likes, and dislikes among the signals it considers. It does not say watch time is the only factor, and it does not publish a complete formula, so no guide can give you an exact recipe for how the system ranks videos.
The inputs also differ by surface. According to the same Help article, watch history is the primary signal for Home, while the video you are currently watching is the main signal for Up Next. Changing one habit therefore affects some parts of YouTube more than others.
What changes when watch history is off
YouTube says that when watch history is off and there is no significant prior history, Home shows the search bar and the left-side menu instead of a stream of video recommendations. The remaining routes into videos are search, your subscribed channels, and Explore. This is YouTube’s description of typical behavior, not a guarantee for every account, device, or interface.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Controls you can use
YouTube’s Help article “Manage your recommendations & search results” describes the following tools. Labels and placement can differ by device and app version, and some options may require you to be signed in.
- Mark a video “Not interested.” Open the menu beside a recommended video and choose “Not interested.” YouTube says you can also give a reason.
- Use “Don’t recommend channel” where it appears. This tells YouTube you don’t want suggestions from that channel. It is not offered on every surface.
- Remove individual items from history. Remove specific videos from your watch history or search history so they stop shaping later suggestions.
- Pause or delete history in your Google Account activity controls. YouTube says history can affect recommendations and other parts of the experience. If you pause history for a short period, YouTube suggests resuming it afterward if you want personalized recommendations back.
Two ways into a video, compared
The choice is less about banning recommendations than about which route you start from. The table below sets the personalized path against the deliberate one, using only what YouTube’s Help material states.

| Route | What drives what you see | What you gain | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personalized Home | Watch history (YouTube’s primary Home signal) | Suggestions you did not search for | Viewing habits shape what appears, and suggestions may repeat familiar topics |
| Up Next | The video you are currently watching | Quick continuation from the video you’re on | Each video pulls you toward related content, so sessions can drift |
| Search | The query you type | Direct control over the topic you choose | You need to know what you want, and you find fewer surprises |
| Subscriptions | Channels you have chosen to follow | A feed from creators you already chose | New creators appear less often unless you search for them |
| Explore | Not stated in YouTube’s Help material | Browsing beyond your existing channels | Not stated in YouTube’s Help material |
A routine that keeps discovery and cuts the feed
Most of the change comes from how you start a session rather than from a single setting. A workable routine looks like this:

- Decide whether you want watch history on. Keep it on if you value personalized suggestions; pause it if you want Home to show search and navigation instead.
- Clear the entries that no longer reflect what you want to watch, one item at a time.
- Mark unwanted recommendations “Not interested” as they appear, and use “Don’t recommend channel” where offered.
- Start sessions from search when you have a specific goal, from subscriptions when you want updates from creators you follow, and from Explore when you want to browse.
Trade-offs and limits
- Discovery versus intention. Fewer recommendations usually means fewer accidental finds. Search and subscriptions reward what you already know you want.
- Settings reduce, but do not remove, personalization. The controls change the inputs YouTube uses. They do not give you a verified way to confirm that every recommendation is gone.
- YouTube’s own claims are unquantified. YouTube’s blog post “On YouTube’s recommendation system” says recommendations drive more overall viewership than subscriptions or search. The post gives no publication date or figure, so treat that as a qualitative statement from the platform rather than a measured result.
- Behavior may vary. Home, Up Next, and Explore are described differently, and what you see can depend on your account, device, and app version.
