If verification-code texts are disappearing, check Google Messages’ Auto-delete OTPs after 24 hours setting and turn it off. If entire conversations or ordinary older messages are missing, check Archived and Trash, then look for a message-limit setting only if you use an older app or device. Android does not have one universal old-message deletion switch.
Why are my old text messages disappearing?
The cause depends on what disappeared. Google Messages has a documented option to automatically remove one-time passcode (OTP) texts after 24 hours. That setting is specific to verification codes; it is not evidence that Google Messages automatically deletes ordinary conversations. Missing conversations may instead be archived or deleted, while some older messaging apps had a setting that removed older messages when a thread reached its limit.
There is no single cause or setting that applies to every Android phone. The app you use and its version matter.

Tap Messages settings, then Message organization.
-
If you see Auto-delete OTPs after 24 hours, turn it off.

What to check when an entire conversation is missing
Look in Archived
In Google Messages, open More > Archived. Archived conversations disappear from the Home screen but remain readable. To put one back in the main list, select it and choose Unarchive. Google Messages Help: Archive, delete and read conversations

Check Trash if your app has it
Google’s help page describes deletion as permanent and says deleted conversations cannot be recovered. However, reporting in 2026 described a Trash feature rollout, so the support wording may not reflect every installed version. Check your app for a Trash folder and consult current Google Messages Help before assuming a recently deleted conversation is unrecoverable. A universal recovery window is not established.

An Android 2.3 user guide documents a Delete old messages option that removes older SMS or MMS messages after a conversation reaches its configured limit. That is historical evidence for an older version of Android, not confirmation that current Android phones include the setting.

Google says Android device backup includes SMS and MMS, as well as RCS messages when you use Google Messages. You can start a backup through Android Settings > Google > All services > Backup and restore > Back up now. Menu names can vary by Android version. A backup is a safeguard; it does not switch off any deletion behavior. Google: Back up or restore data on your Android device
