To stop videos from starting on their own, turn off the setting that controls the specific behavior: a browser’s media-autoplay permission, a service’s next-video setting, or an app’s preview or next-episode control. These are separate switches, so changing one may not affect the others.
First identify what is autoplaying
A video that begins when a webpage loads is usually controlled by the browser’s permission for website media. A related video that starts after the current one ends, a streaming preview, or the next episode is generally controlled by the service or app.
- Page-load video: change the browser’s media autoplay permission. Some browsers let you block media across websites or make an exception for one site.
- Next video, preview, or episode: change the relevant setting in that service. It may be specific to a device or profile.
- Muted video: if you want the video itself not to start, choose a control that blocks video as well as audio. Muting alone does not stop playback.
Block autoplay in your browser
Firefox: block audio and video or change a site exception
- Open Firefox Settings.
- Select Privacy & Security.
- Under Permissions, select Settings next to Autoplay.
- Set Default for all websites to Block Audio and Video, then save the change.
This option blocks all media, including muted video. To adjust only one website, use its site information panel from the address bar or change its entry in the autoplay permissions list. Menu labels and placement can vary by Firefox release. Mozilla’s Firefox instructions cover the global setting and site-specific permissions.
Microsoft Edge: choose an autoplay permission
- Open Edge Settings.
- Go to Cookies and site permissions > Media autoplay.
- Choose Allow, Limit, or Block.
Microsoft describes Limit as Edge’s default; prior interaction with a site’s media can affect whether it autoplays. The cited Microsoft guidance is for the US market and notes that functionality and availability may vary by region. See Microsoft’s Edge autoplay guidance for its explanation of these options.

Turn off autoplay inside video services
YouTube: stop the next related video
YouTube’s Autoplay setting controls whether another related video plays after the current one ends. It is not a browser-wide block for videos that start on webpages.
- Computer: use the Autoplay switch in the video player.
- Android or iPhone/iPad: select your profile picture > Settings > Autoplay.
- TV: open YouTube app Settings > Autoplay.
YouTube allows different Autoplay settings on different devices, so check each device where you watch. Google’s YouTube Help instructions describe the controls.

Netflix: disable previews and next episodes separately
Netflix has separate profile settings for previews and for automatically playing the next episode.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Previews: in the app, select a profile and turn off Autoplay Previews in Manage Profiles. In a browser, open Account > Profiles, select a profile, then open Playback settings and turn off Autoplay previews. Netflix says the change updates automatically, but the device may need a refresh; switching profiles or signing out and back in may also be needed. Netflix’s preview autoplay instructions explain the setting.
- Next episode: turn off Autoplay Next Episode in the profile’s Playback settings. This is separate from the preview option. Netflix’s next-episode instructions cover that control.
What if your browser or app is not listed?
Controls depend on the browser, service, and version. Look in the current settings for terms such as Autoplay, Playback, or Media. In a browser, check site permissions; in a streaming app, check playback or profile settings. If a setting is not available, the supplied official guidance does not establish that the service offers a complete disable switch.

No single switch is established here that overrides autoplay everywhere. A browser permission can block website media while leaving a service’s next-video feature enabled, and an app’s profile setting may not apply to another device or profile. Firefox’s documentation also distinguishes blocking media on a site from turning off a platform’s “Play next video” behavior: Mozilla’s explanation of browser and platform controls describes the difference.
